Sept. 3 games
Columbia City vs. Bellmont @ 7 pm
Churubusco vs. Prairie Heights @ 7:30 pm
Game of the Week
Whitko vs. Southwood @ 7 pm
Beginning this week, Talk of the Town Sports is hosting its first ever prize-winning contest. If you have ever noticed, every Friday we post a Friday Football Forecast, where a fictional Wizard predicts each county schools' game. Now you will have the chance to do the same, but if you are the week's winner, you will receive a gift card of $10 value from County Line Subway.
Here's how to play:
1.) Visit the website every week to find out if that week is a prize-winning week. If it is, there will be an "upcoming games" article posted to the website, so you know what games to predict.
2.) You must get on the website, check the upcoming games, and email in your predictions of the winner for each game to the Talk of the Town Sports Editor at wcsportswriter@gmail.com.
3.) In the case of a tie, you must also send in a total tiebreaker score for the "Game of the Week" (the "Game of the Week" will be noted each week).
4.) If a winner can't be determined by the tiebreaker, a winner will be picked from random drawing.
5.) Predictions will be accepted all week until game day at 3 pm.
6.) Winners will be notified through email on how to receive their prize.
7.) All decisions are final.
8.) Must be 18 years old to play and coaches and players are not eligible.

Rivalry week turns out to be blow out week with all three games ending in at least a 30-point victory.
Churubusco 44, Central Noble 7
Churubusco has owned the Central Noble rivalry over the last few years and not much changed tonight.
Columbia City 30, Whitko 0
Columbia City is known for their passing offense, but it was a different story against Whitko as Eagle running backs Jacob Johnson and Dylan Miller put up big yards throughout the game.
Homestead 52, Warsaw 3
Not much to say other than Warsaw fans probably left early.

Geez! Stick a fork in the Wizard last week 'cause he was done. Last week's 1-2 performance was an embarrassing showing for him, but it was the first games of the season. No excuses this week, plus there is only two games to predict with the Columbia City-Whitko rivalry coming back to surface. As a fun, fill-in third game, the Wizard is going to extend his predictions to teams just outside the area.
Churubusco at Central Noble @ 7:30 pm
After last week's 46-0 routing of Fremont and last season's 39-0 shutout of Central Noble, the Wizard says, same ole thing for the Eagles. Central Noble should be better than last year and they do have home field advantage, but Eagle senior Kyle Mathewson is too much for the Cougars.
Churubusco 42 Central Noble 7
Whitko vs. Columbia City @ 7 pm
After a five year recess, the Whitko-Columbia City rivalry is back in session. Since their break, both teams have two coaches that have never been head-to-head, and as an added bonus, both teams are coming off winning weeks. The Wildcats shutout Wawasee 20-0 and the Eagles smoked Warsaw 35-16. The Wizard says the Eagles win might be a bit bigger momentum booster, but then again Wawasee is no pushover. The Wizard says...
If Columbia City comes with a high-powered offense...
CC 35 Whitko 21
If Whitko holds Columbia City to three and out...
Whitko 20 CC 17
Homestead at Warsaw @ 7 pm
The fill-in game of the week should not be much of a battle, especially if Warsaw doesn't come with much fire. Homestead is too strong. Although, the last time this game was played at Warsaw, the Tigers stunned the Spartans. The Wizard says, "not again."
Homestead 45 Warsaw 10

"We finished up a pretty good week, going 3-0. Tonight, I thought our guys did well to close out their matches and not let opponents get back into it," head coach Doug Stoffel said.
With the win, the Eagles move to 4-1 on the season.

I am glad to report that Talk of the Town Sports has reached its 200th entry to the website and with the 200th entry, I am given a successful recap to report. Just maybe, this means that the team that reached that milestone with us will have a successful season; in which case, the Columbia City XC team is the lucky winner.
Both XC teams competed at Huntington North over the weekend and both teams landed in strong spots for the season opener.
The girls' team finished 4th, in a field of 13, and leading the way for the Lady Eagles was freshman Samantha Roush (19:09.00) in 2nd place. Giving the Lady Eagles another top 10 finish was senior Renee Menzie (19:54.80) in the eighth spot.
Senior Samantha Engle (20:41.90) completed the course in 21st, while freshman Brooke Werstler (21:03.00) ended in the 32nd spot. Rounding out the top 40 was senior Laken Lefever (21:11.20) in 35th, sophomore Carlee Hearld (21:24.70) in 39th, followed by freshman Erin Knepple (21:28.20) in 40th.
On the boys' side junior Brendon Zoltek (17:31.50) led the way in the 29th spot and was followed by freshman Evan Harney (17:32.40) in 31st. Rounding out the top 75 was sophomore Adam Bernhard (18:36.40) in 68th, Ian Rooda (18:37.70) in 69th, Trevor Maggart (18:50.20) in 73rd, and David Potter (18:54.10) in 75th.

Wow! The Wizard couldn't be anymore wrong on his predictions this week. Both Columbia City and Whitko picked up monumental victories. The Wizard is sorry for doubting both schools. However, the Churubusco Eagles took care of business, in which the Wizard knew they would.
Columbia City 35, Warsaw 16
Columbia City quarterback, Logan Rehrer, threw for 188 yards, 4 TDs, and 1 Int in the Eagles victory.
Churubusco 46, Fremont 0
Churubusco rusher, Kyle Mathewson, scrambled for 3 TDs in the Eagles shutout victory.
Whitko 20, Wawasee 0
A lot of questions were answered for head coach Wayne Swender and Co. as the Wildcats shutout the Warriors. Big game lined up for next week against Columbia City.

Year 2 for the Wizard begins tonight; the time where he takes a look into the crystal ball and predicts each Whitley County game. The first week is always rough for the Wizard as he doesn't have a true scouting report. Bare with him for the first week...
Columbia City vs. Warsaw at 7pm
From the head coach of the Eagles, Warsaw is the game they want because it will set the tone for the rest of the season. And the Wizard heard that Warsaw doesn't have a very good quarterback... but don't get too excited, history suggests Warsaw. The Tigers have won every game but the first one since 1997. Sorry CC.
CC 20 Warsaw 24
Churubusco vs. Fremont at 7:30 pm
Churubusco was hyped last year with a 14-0 victory in their season opener against Fremont. The Wizard looks for that to happen again, as 'Busco returns the majority of their power offense. A small bit of the Wizard says Fremont might be more than the Eagles can handle, but then again...'Busco all the way.
'Busco 17 Fremont 10
Whitko vs. Wawasee at 7pm
The Wildcats follow a similar path with Wawasee as Columbia City does with Warsaw. This game is the hardest to read; yet, probably the most deciding victory, especially with a new Wildcat taking the snaps.
Whitko 14 Wawasee 24
Start the countdown because we are a week away from Friday Night Lights. And a week away from starting up a new season of Friday's Football Forecast, where I take a glance into the crystal ball and try to predict the scores for all three area schools. Except this year, there might be a little twist...
In the spirit of preseason rituals, here are the outlooks for the three area schools.
Columbia City
Head coach: Randy Hudgins 2009 record: 4-8 (loss in sectional final)
# of starters returning on Offense: 8 # of starters returning on Defense: 7
Players to watch for:
Logan Rehrer QB, Cory Clifford ILB, Jacob Moser DL/OL, Andrew Tourney OL/DL, Stephen Farrer WR
Make sure to make it to this game in 2010: Week 1 vs. Warsaw
Coach's comments: Everything is in place for us to have a successful season. We experienced some success at the end of last year, we have a large number of experienced and talented players back, our opening schedule has several home games, and we are coming off a good off-season of preparation. This can translate into a great season if our seniors demand discipline, great attitude, and great effort from themselves and the team. You win with good people who play together as one.
Churubusco
Head coach: Lee Etzler 2009 record: 10-2 (conference champs)
# of starters returning on Offense: 6 # of starters returning on Defense: 8
Players to watch for:
Kyle Monk QB/S, Kyle Mathewson FB/OLB, Jordan Turner TE/OLB, Dustin Arvola T/DT
Make sure to make it to this game in 2010: Week 5 vs. Angola
Coach's comments:We have some good skilled kids returning and overall team speed should be as good as we have had. However, we will need younger kids to step up and fill a few key holes.
Whitko
Head coach: Wayne Swender 2009 record: 3-7 (first round loss in sectional)
# starters returning on Offense: 8 # starters returning on Defense: 8
Players to watch for:
Alex Stoddard QB, Dakota Harmon FB, DJ Fouce RB, Derek Snep WR
Make sure to make it to this game in 2010: Week 2 vs. Columbia City
Coach's comments: We have to replace all-conference quarterback Gabe Starkey who threw for 814 yards last year, but goals are set to become a more ball control offense and hold our opponents to 12 or less points per game.
