CC girls track video

Thursday night marked the biggest night of the spring sports season. Of the eighteen sporting events between the three county schools, eight of them were at home. Trying to get to as many teams as I could was next to impossible, so I decided to shoot video footage, hoping it would be quicker coverage. Let me know what you think by leaving comments at the bottom of the article. I know the quality isn't top notch, but that's what I had to work with tonight.

The race is the 200m dash and I join in with about 100 meters left. Columbia City took the first and second spots in the race. First went to freshman Megan Deutsch and second was senior Cassie Gareiss. The Lady Eagles won the meet against Huntington North 70-62.

Nothing but a memory

By Andrew Ferrell

I couldn’t fall asleep last night, and if you know me that is super hard to do. I can’t blame it on Mountain Dew. I can’t blame it on coffee. And I even tried Tylenol PM.  My late night struggle to fall asleep can only be caused by one thing … Duke. Yes, I blame it on Duke. However, I don’t give Duke complete responsibility for my sleeplessness, but rather all Goliaths of the sports world.

C’mon the powerhouse schools will always have a large fan base and will always have a chance to win a National title, but what fun is it to root for a certainty? Rooting for the underdog brings a sense of joy, especially when they topple a Goliath. So yes, Goliaths are nice to have around because they keep a consistency for the people that need that, but the underdogs, they keep the sport interesting and fresh. And when the powerhouse wins, unless you’re a fan, there is a huge disappointment associated with their win. Simply put, it’s just not fun. I mean, who wants to deal with heart break?

Don’t get me wrong, the underdog has their moments, so let’s take a walk down memory lane.  I bet one of these David beating Goliath games will put a smile on your face because that’s what a no-chance team does when it wins…makes you feel a sense of satisfaction.

1954-The Milan Miracle

1980-The Miracle on Ice.

1983- NC State men’s basketball team topples Houston and State’s head coach Jimmy V searches for somebody to hug after the win.

2007- Boise State tricks Oklahoma and wins the Fiesta Bowl.

2008- The New York Giants knock off the New England Patriots dynasty in super bowl XLII.

Unfortunately, moments like these are rare and like many Hoosiers, I sat and watched the Butler vs. Duke, David vs. Goliath, Small school vs. Big school game, hoping for another rare moment. And like many Hoosiers I was disappointed when Gordon Hayward’s last second heave bounced off the rim and gave us nothing more but a memory.  And I sat there upset at the world, knowing that once again a powerhouse had trumped an underdog, I was restless and my adrenaline was rushing through like a river wild. I knew I needed to settle down and so I sat on my couch, Hayward’s shot playing differently in my head, and discovered the perfect fix for my sleeplessness. So I popped in the movie Hoosiers, the stars aligned, and I fell fast asleep knowing that there is hope for underdogs across sports nation.

By Andrew Ferrell

The Columbia City boys’ track team competed at Huntington North on Thursday evening and lost the meet in a 99-35 score.

The four first place positions were won by Seth Sprangler (52.90) in the 400M dash, Trevor Maggart (45.10) in the 300M hurdles, Dylan Miller in the pole vault (11’6”), and the 1600M relay team of Spangler, Maggart, Andy Helvie, and Jared Murphy.

Whitko sports update

Baseball

The Whitko baseball squad has opened their season with a 2-0 record.  The first victory came against #6 in 3A New Haven 7-4. In the first inning, Kurt Boggs, Nathan Sherrard, and Trevor Sleighter scored on a triple by Alex Stoddard and Stoddard scored on single by Coty West. The other set of scoring came late in the seventh inning, Colin Nicodemus and Boggs scored on a single by Sherrard and Alex Winger came in on a wild pitch.

"I couldn't ask for a better way to start the season than to go on the road and beat the #6 team in 3A," Whitko head coach Erik Hisner said. “Kurt (Boggs) threw the ball extremely well.  We were not expecting him to throw a complete game, but he kept his pitch count down.”

The second victory came with a shutout win over Harding 29-0.  Whitko carried big bats as Alex Winger went 3-4 from the plate, had 4 runs, 7 RBIs, and 2 home runs. Kody Brandenburg went perfect from the plate at 3-3, had 3 runs scored, and 4 RBIs, while Coty West also went perfect at the plate going 2-2 and posted 2 RBIs.

Whitko heads to Lakeland Park on Saturday for a doubleheader at 10 am.
