(Talk of the Town photo contributed) Columbia City wrestling opened their season against Bellmont on Tuesday night and fell to the Braves 63-12. Scoring for the Eagles came from Bryce Forrester in the 103 pound class and Derek Kissinger in the 112 pound class. Top, Kissinger pins his Bellmont opponent, snatching 1 of 2 victories for the Eagles.
Churubusco

Sectional: 36 at Garrett
Games to watch this season: Dec. 18 at Prairie Heights, Jan. 19 vs. Leo, Jan. 29, vs. Central Noble, Feb. 19 vs. Fairfield, Feb. 26 at Eastside
Outlook: Churubusco struggled last season, but look for improvements as head coach McBride continues to establish his philosophies on the court. Decent season ahead, but remember Turtle Town loves their football.

Outlook: Chris Benedict comes back to Columbia City after coaching a few years at Valparaiso. The community is excited to see him back nd on the same hand, he is too. Columbia City should see a drastic improvement from last season with him behind the reins. Look for the Eagles to make a deep run in the sectional.

Join me this week for great match ups on the basketball court. This is the last week before girls' basketball joins forces with boys' basketball on the weekends. The Mad Hatter says it is the weekend of the Eagles.
Churubusco @ Fairfield on Friday night
This is Fairfield's first game and who knows what to expect from them? I must say that the shear fact that it is Fairfield must mean it is going to be a good game when 'Busco comes to town. My gut tells me that 'Busco will come home happy campers.
Busco 45 Fairfield 39
Columbia City @ Marion on Saturday night
The game worth traveling for is this game. Columbia City leveled Snider on Tuesday and look to improve to 3-0 on the season. Hopefully, Columbia City can control the tempo, otherwise, it might be a track meet. Marion will play a similar style to Snider and I say the Eagles sneak in another victory.
CC 56 Marion 52
Whitko vs. Elkhart Memorial on Saturday night
Whitko has struggled to find a rhythm and are coming off an 88-34 loss to defending 3A state champions Elmhurst on Thursday night. Since the Lady Wildcats won't have much time to relax, the Mad Hatter says, Whitko has trouble finding their first win.
Whitko 41 Memorial 50
Saturday was the first swim contest of the season; the girls participated in the Norwell invitational against 8 other teams and finished in the third spot. The top five teams were:
Norwell 258
Oak hill 209
Columbia City 198
Bluffton 144
South Adams 125
Columbia City was represented well in the individual events. Starting the meet off, Rachel Hartman placed 6th, Celine Rongos ended in 7th, and Mandi Wright finished 8th for the 200 free stroke. In the 200 Individual Medley, Jena Bosselman placed 5th.
The 50 free stroke saw Cassie Gariess in 7th and Anneke Van Straten in 10th. In the 100 butterfly, Celine Rongos finished 9th. The top finisher for the swimmers was Haley Richter who won the 100 free stroke and 100 backstroke, while Columbia City saw Mandi Wright place 6th in the 500 free stroke.
Columbia City is back in the pool on November 24th.

As we tuck away the pads, helmets, and pigskin from football season, we also say good-bye to the Wizard. At the same time, we bring out the shorts, jerseys, and round ball for basketball season. We also introduce the Hardwood Mad Hatter as the basketball predictions genius. Every weekend, the Mad Hatter will attempt to predict the weekend sporting events during the winter season. Here comes the Boom!
Up first...
Nov. 13
Whitko vs. Columbia City
Last season Columbia City slipped by Whitko in the final minutes taking out the Wildcats 39-32 at home. Both teams return many of the same players, with plenty of experience. This could become a heavily contested game as Whitko head coach Rob Bell is a product of Columbia City head coach Wayne Kreiger. With so many games between the two schools coming down to the wire, The Mad Hatter will say this...
If Columbia City takes off big from the start, CC 52 Whitko 39
If Whitko is hanging around come the fourth quarter, Whitko 47 CC 44
Nov. 14
Churubusco vs. Whitko
Another toss-up! Last year, 'Busco hung in their in the first half, but Whitko pulled away as the second half began, but Whitko also had a strong presence inside. With the graduation of Emily Bidwell, it might be a long night for the Wildcats. However, the Eagles are under first year head coach Jamie Perlich and there are many questions to be answered. The one thing the Eagles have going for them is the fact that they are at home.
If 'Busco can handle the Whitko defense, 'Busco 49 Whitko 42
If Whitko can show a presence inside, Whitko 38 'Busco 33
Other predictions
The Boilers and Hoosiers win their season openers on the hardwood and the Colts win vs. New England 21-20.
By Andrew Ferrell
Churubusco
Head coach: Jamie Perlich, 0-0 in 1st year as 'Busco head coach
Last season: 2-19
Class: 2A
Sectional: 36 at Eastside
Games to watch this season: Nov. 14 vs. Whitko, Nov. 20 at Fairfield, Dec. 19 vs. Prairie Heights, Jan. 22 at Angola, Jan. 30 at Central Noble
Outlook: Head coach Perlich comes back to Churubusco, only this time it is as the Girls' head coach. Look for the Eagles to get many extra wins this season with Perlich as the new head coach.
Columbia City
Head coach: Wayne Kreiger, 505-215 in 33 years as CC coach
Last season: 12-11
Class: 3A
Sectional: 21 at Wawasee
Games to watch this season: Nov. 21 at Marion, Dec, 11 vs. Norwell, Dec. 15 vs. Warsaw, Dec. 23 vs. FW Concordia, Jan. 12 vs. Wawasee
Outlook: After not graduating any seniors last season, Columbia City looks to have plenty of returning starters with plenty of playing time minutes. Look for another winning season of Lady Eagle basketball and possibly a long run in the sectionals.
Whitko
Head coach: Rob Bell 32-33 in 4th year at Whitko
Last season: 5-16
Class: 3A
Sectional: 21 at Wawasee
Games to watch this season: Nov. 14 at Churubusco, Dec. 9 at FW Canterbury, Dec. 19 at Tippecanoe Valley, Jan 19 vs. Wawasee, Jan. 23 vs. Northfield
Outlook: Whitko graduated some good talent from last year's squad, particularly underneath the basket and at the point. However, due to injuries, a lot of young players saw much playing time and will most likely get the start for this season. Look for Whitko to start off rocky, but coach Bell will have those girls primed and full of confidence as the season lengthens, improving their record from last season.
