Some things are just meant to be, like apples in an apple pie or icing on a cake. For the past two years, a victory on homecoming night is also meant to be as the Eagles won over the DeKalb Barons in a 16-13 score.
This year’s victory was huge for the Eagles. It was huge because it showed that last week’s stumble at Homestead could be overcome. It was huge because it was the first win since the first round of sectional play last year. It was huge because head coach Randy Hudgins picked up his first career victory.
“I feel relieved, you think of what it will feel like and what you will say, but nothing really prepares you for the emotions,” Hudgins said of his first career victory.
Both teams’ struggles to find a rhythm in the beginning of the first quarter of play as both were forced to pun on their first possessions. The first score of the game didn’t come until the 2:53 mark in the first quarter, when Columbia City quarterback Logan Rehrer ran into the end zone on a 2-yard quarterback keeper, giving the Eagles a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
A fumbled punt return by Columbia City gave DeKalb excellent field position early in the second quarter and a 33-yard field goal attempt was good to put the Barons on the board, trailing 7-3 with 10 minutes to play in the half.
Another Eagle fumble, midway through the second quarter, gave DeKalb another opportunity to score, but facing a 2nd and 20, the Barons decided to go deep through the air and Columbia City’s Adam Lemon intercepted the pass.
Unfortunately, the Eagles were unable to convert after the interception and were forced to punt the ball away.
Some hard-nosed running by DeKalb’s Jake Hammel got the Barons within scoring distance, late in the second quarter and a pass to the end zone by Barons quarterback Jordan Pfister ended the quarter with the Barons leading 10-7 at the half.
Columbia City began the third quarter with some steam to let out as they marched down the field to the Baron 36-yard line on pass plays from Rehrer to junior Stephen Farrer.
Facing a 4th and 8 the Eagles decided to run a pass play, and the pass fell short, intended for Farrer, but a pass interference call on DeKalb gave the Eagles a fresh set of downs.
On the ensuing play, DeKalb gave up another five yards on an off sides penalty and Columbia City capitalized as Rehrer found Farrer in the middle of the end zone for a 19-yard pass for the score. After a successful PAT, the Eagles led 14-7, where the score remained at the end of the third quarter.
DeKalb opened the fourth quarter of play with a field goal attempt that split the goal posts and put them one point behind 14-13.
On Columbia City’s first drive of the fourth quarter, the offense methodically pushed the ball down into deep Baron territory. With the ball on the Baron 12-yard line, and only holding a one point led, the Eagles again decided to go for a 4th and 4. A pass to Farrer fell short of his hands and the Eagles turned the ball over on downs.
Columbia City’s defense stood tall, late in the fourth quarter, as they backed the Baron offense further into their own terrain and forced DeKalb to punt. A botched snap flew over the hands of DeKalb’s kicker and out the back of the end zone for a safety, giving the Eagles a 16-13 boost.
With 1:48 showing in the fourth quarter, DeKalb pushed the ball to the Columbia City 35 yard line. DeKalb looked as if they were going to score, and on a 4th and 9 for the Barons Pfister hooked up with senior John Haynes for a first down.
At 49 seconds left in the game, Pfister again tossed a bomb intended for Haynes, but Eagle junior Ben Murphy stole the pass from midair and Columbia City ran out the clock for the final 16-13 score.
“This is a big building block for our program,” Hudgins concluded. “I can’t say enough for our players, coaches, and fans; what great fans, its outstanding to see the fan support.”
Columbia City improves their record to 1-4 (1-2 NHC) and travels to New Haven next Friday for a match-up with the Bulldogs at 7pm.
