Whitko pours on a defensive performance

(Talk of the Town photo by Andrew Ferrell) Below, one of the referees dries off the ball because of last night's soggy weather.  The Wildcats won 34-12 over Northfield.

By Andrew Ferrell

Four important things happened in Friday night’s game against the Northfield Norseman.  First, the Wildcats won their homecoming in astonishing fashion, 34-12.  Second, the team showed they can win on horrible field conditions with all of the cold rain smacking them in the face. Third, the win keeps the ‘Cats alongside the top teams in the conference.  Fourth, the ‘Cats find themselves back at the all-important .500 winning percentage.

Whitko’s defense provided all the entertainment for the evening with an outstanding five-interception game and backing up the Norsemen a total of 17 yards with early tackles and sacks.

In the first drive for the Norsemen, it was the Whitko defense stepping up and producing a 5-yard sack, ending their drive.  The Wildcats didn’t waste anytime as Whitko’s D.J. Fouce scrambled into the end zone for a 49-yard run and the score.

After an interception by Wildcat junior Kory Wood, late in the second quarter, Whitko found themselves in deep Northfield territory. Fouce made it happen again, as he rumbled his way in for the 27-yard touchdown run with 2:03 left in the half, Whitko led 12-0.

The second half was much the same for Whitko, scoring came from the Northfield turnovers.

A fumble recovered by the ‘Cats gave them another shot to blow the lead wide open.  A 51 yard drive on 11 plays ended with Whitko senior quarterback Gabe Starkey sneaking into the end zone for another Wildcat score, boosting the lead to 20-0.

Whitko’s defense continued unleashing its wrath on the Norsemen and an interception by Wildcat Derek Snep gave the Wildcat offense another chance to march down the field.

After a couple attempts at the end zone, Whitko sophomore running back Austin Mort pushed his way in for the score, extending the lead to 26-0.

Whitko put the Norsemen out of their misery on another interception by Whitko linebacker Cody Bays, late in the fourth quarter, and sophomore running back Dominic Arrowood punched the ball into the end zone for a 34-0 lead.

Not wanting to leave South Whitley with a shutout, the Norsemen pounded in a 23-yard touchdown run with 1:39 showing on the clock. After an on-side kick recovery, Northfield ran in a 7-yard run as time expired, leaving the game at 34-12 in favor of the Wildcats.

The win gives the Wildcats a 3-3 (3-1 TRC) season record and the Wildcats are on the road next Friday against North Miami at 7 pm.

Final scores from week 6

By Andrew Ferrell

Churubusco vs. West Noble

The Eagles got off to a slow start in Friday night's contest between the West Noble Chargers, but pulled it together in the second half to escape with a 28-6 victory.

Trailing 6-0 at half because of 4 fumbles in the first half, 'Busco came out to play for the second half of the game.  'Busco running back Kyle Mathewson rumbled for 164 yards and 2 touchdowns, for the game, to help the Eagles with the win.

The Eagles continue their undefeated season as they compete in their second of three straight home games on Friday night against Bowman Academy at 7:30 pm.

Columbia City at New Haven

The slippery, wet conditions of the field didn't help the play of the Eagles against New Haven as the Columbia City Eagles fell to the Bulldogs 31-15.

Columbia City struggled to find an effective offense as they gave up two safeties.  The defense also struggled to bring down New Haven running back Frank Lloyd as he hauled in 200 yards of rushing, giving the Bulldogs a big boost.

The Eagles are back home next Friday to host the East Noble Knights at 7 pm.

Friday's Football Forecast

By Andrew Ferrell

I'm feeling excited for my sixth week glance into the crystal ball. My 3-0 record last week boosted my overall record to 8-4. Can I do it again? Let's hope!

Whitko vs. Northfield at 7pm

It's homecoming for the 'Cats and nothing can stop them, especially after a big win at Wabash.

'Cats 17 Northfield 13

Churubusco vs. West Noble at 7:30 pm

Last week was the closest competition yet for the Eagles, but it still was a 20-point win.  Against a winless West Noble team should be easy.

Busco 42 West Noble 3

Columbia City @ New Haven at 7pm

Tough pick this week, Columbia City coming off their first win of the season and New Haven slipping to the bottom of the conference.  If this was at home I would really like the Eagles.  It's a coin toss and luckily it came up Columbia City.

Indian Springs 7th grade football improves their season with win over New Haven

(Talk of the Town photo provided) Above, a look at the Indian Springs Middle School 7th grade football team from earlier this season.

Article provided

The Indian Springs Eagle Stars won the toss and chose to defer to the New Haven Bulldogs in their game Tuesday evening at Indian Springs Middle School.

“We kicked off the New haven and they came out throwing, our secondary was having trouble stopping the short pass,” said coach Mike Roy of his 7th grade football team. “New Haven moved the ball up the field well, in the 1st drive connecting on the short pass in the flats often.”

The Bulldogs scored on a pass play to Travis Crowe. The PAT was stopped.  Taking the kickoff from New Haven the Eagle Stars moved the ball up the field led by rushes from Braden Meyer and Justin Bachelder down to the 3 yard line.

“On a quarterback sneak by TJ Yagle we punched it into the end zone with a great push from the line and help form Meyer in the backfield,” Roy said.

The PAT attempt by Kyle Burns was wide left making the score 6-6 with 1:09 remaining in the 1st quarter.  The Eagle Stars kicked off to New Haven and went back on the defense. The 2nd play from this series was intercepted by Kyle Burns and he ran it in for pay dirt.   The PAT kick by Burns was good making the score 14-6 with 48.9 left in the 1st.  In the 2nd  New Haven was forced to punt, Braden Meyer fielded the kick and took the punt up the middle and breaking tackles to ramble 55 yards for a TD another PAT kick was good by Burns. New Haven again scored shortly before the half on a pass play. Making the score 22-13 at the break.

During the second half, ISMS moved the ball very well. Meyer broke open a 47 yard run for a touchdown at the 5:42 mark in the 3rd the point after was low and no good with a score of 28-13 with ISMS on top.  Turning the ball over on downs to the Eagle Stars, New Haven was put on the defense in the 3rd.  A nice 10 yard run by Justin Bachelder put up 6 for the home team. The PAT was a planned fake, a pass to Jacob Wolfe; he was tackled just short of the goal line making the PAT no good. New Haven put up another score in the 3rd. Justin Bachelder took the kickoff 65 yards for a score and the PAT kick by Burns was good, 41-19 Indian Springs.  In the 4th TJ Yagle connected with Trevor Bolt on a 25 yard pass for a touchdown, again Burn’s kick was good making the final score 49-19. The 7th grade team improved its record to 4-1.

Coach Brian Bills commented on how New Haven exploited some of his team’s weaknesses. “This is a good thing for us to be able to see what can happen and we can make the necessary adjustments,” said Bills.

Coach Ken Wolfe commented on his defensive secondary as well, adding “We got a good look at defending the pass tonight. We are going to work on those areas.”

“We played well tonight once we adjusted,” Roy added. “Some of our key players were sidelined for one reason or another; the team stepped up and did a fine job.”

The 7th graders will travel to Norwell next Tuesday, September 29, 2009, with a game time of 5:00 p.m.

Don't mess with the Eagle during homecoming

 By Andrew Ferrell

Some things are just meant to be, like apples in an apple pie or icing on a cake.  For the past two years, a victory on homecoming night is also meant to be as the Eagles won over the DeKalb Barons in a 16-13 score.

This year’s victory was huge for the Eagles. It was huge because it showed that last week’s stumble at Homestead could be overcome. It was huge because it was the first win since the first round of sectional play last year. It was huge because head coach Randy Hudgins picked up his first career victory.

“I feel relieved, you think of what it will feel like and what you will say, but nothing really prepares you for the emotions,” Hudgins said of his first career victory.

Both teams’ struggles to find a rhythm in the beginning of the first quarter of play as both were forced to pun on their first possessions.  The first score of the game didn’t come until the 2:53 mark in the first quarter, when Columbia City quarterback Logan Rehrer ran into the end zone on a 2-yard quarterback keeper, giving the Eagles a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

A fumbled punt return by Columbia City gave DeKalb excellent field position early in the second quarter and a 33-yard field goal attempt was good to put the Barons on the board, trailing 7-3 with 10 minutes to play in the half.

Another Eagle fumble, midway through the second quarter, gave DeKalb another opportunity to score, but facing a 2nd and 20, the Barons decided to go deep through the air and Columbia City’s Adam Lemon intercepted the pass.

Unfortunately, the Eagles were unable to convert after the interception and were forced to punt the ball away.

Some hard-nosed running by DeKalb’s Jake Hammel got the Barons within scoring distance, late in the second quarter and a pass to the end zone by Barons quarterback Jordan Pfister ended the quarter with the Barons leading 10-7 at the half.

Columbia City began the third quarter with some steam to let out as they marched down the field to the Baron 36-yard line on pass plays from Rehrer to junior Stephen Farrer.

Facing a 4th and 8 the Eagles decided to run a pass play, and the pass fell short, intended for Farrer, but a pass interference call on DeKalb gave the Eagles a fresh set of downs.

On the ensuing play, DeKalb gave up another five yards on an off sides penalty and Columbia City capitalized as Rehrer found Farrer in the middle of the end zone for a  19-yard pass for the score. After a successful PAT, the Eagles led 14-7, where the score remained at the end of the third quarter.

DeKalb opened the fourth quarter of play with a field goal attempt that split the goal posts and put them one point behind 14-13.

On Columbia City’s first drive of the fourth quarter, the offense methodically pushed the ball down into deep Baron territory.  With the ball on the Baron 12-yard line, and only holding a one point led, the Eagles again decided to go for a 4th and 4.  A pass to Farrer fell short of his hands and the Eagles turned the ball over on downs.

Columbia City’s defense stood tall, late in the fourth quarter, as they backed the Baron offense further into their own terrain and forced DeKalb to punt.  A botched snap flew over the hands of DeKalb’s kicker and out the back of the end zone for a safety, giving the Eagles a 16-13 boost.

With 1:48 showing in the fourth quarter, DeKalb pushed the ball to the Columbia City 35 yard line.  DeKalb looked as if they were going to score, and on a 4th and 9 for the Barons Pfister hooked up with senior John Haynes for a first down.

At 49 seconds left in the game, Pfister again tossed a bomb intended for Haynes, but Eagle junior Ben Murphy stole the pass from midair and Columbia City ran out the clock for the final 16-13 score.

“This is a big building block for our program,” Hudgins concluded. “I can’t say enough for our players, coaches, and fans; what great fans, its outstanding to see the fan support.”

Columbia City improves their record to 1-4 (1-2 NHC) and travels to New Haven next Friday for a match-up with the Bulldogs at 7pm.

Columbia City tennis slips past Carroll

The Columbia City tennis team put together a record week as they knocked off #26 ranked East Noble in a 3-2 score on Tuesday night and followed that performance with a win against #29 ranked Carroll on Thursday night, 3-2.

The win against Carroll is only the second time in head coach Doug Stoffel’s 12 seasons that Columbia City has won against the Chargers.

“These wins don't come around very often, so I'm going to just let the past week soak in,” Stoffel said. “To accomplish the things these guys have accomplished, when just a couple of them played varsity last year, speaks volumes about the kind of young men I coach.”

In the first match of the night, Columbia City’s No. 2 doubles duo of Derrick Hinen and Gabe Boles defeated the Charger pair of Steve Snider and Billy Finger 6-1, 0-6, 6-1.

Off the court next was Columbia City’s No. 3 singles player Andy Moog who defeated his opponent Taylor Turney in two sets 6-4, 6-1.

The Chargers bounced back in No. 2 singles as Jake Yager beat Eagle Matt Sewell 7-5, 6-4.Carroll continued their surge in No. 1 doubles when Tariq Anabtaw and Travis Glassley won over the Columbia City pair of Alan Murphy and Travis Johnson 6-1, 7-5.

With the match coming down to the No. 1 singles competition, it looked as if Carroll would walk away victorious, as Eagle Dylan Hinen fell behind 4-6 in the first match.  Through a three hour match, Hinen collected himself and slipped by Charger Jordan Glassley in a final two match score 7-5, 7-6.

“These guys never give up and they never quit,” Stoffel concluded.

The Eagles move to 11-2 (4-1 NHC) on the season and see action next Monday at home against Manchester.

Final scores from week 5

Churubusco @ Angola

The Eagles proved they are a force to be reckoned with for another time this week as they picked up a 26-6 victory over the Angola Hornets Friday night.  It was also another groundbreaking game for Eagle running backs Kyle Mathewson and Jordan Hamilton as they ate up plenty of rushing yards.

The Eagles improve to 5-0 on the season and host the West Noble Chargers next Friday night at 7:30 pm.

Whitko @ Wabash

It was a big night for the Whitko Wildcats  against the Wabash Apaches as they scooped up a 30-7 win Friday night.

The Apaches got ahead early in the first quarter as their quarterback tossed a 45-yard pass for the touchdown.  On the next Whitko possession, the Wildcats answered the call with a 44-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Gabe Starkey (9 for 15, 163 yards, 2 TDs, 2 rushing TDs, 195.28 passer rating) to receiver Chase Stouder, (2 for 4, 78 yards, 1 TD) putting the Wildcats in front 8-7.

In the second, Whitko ripped the score wide open with two quarterback keepers by Starkey as he scrambled into the end zone giving Whitko the 24-7 lead with 5:41 left in the half.  The Wildcats continued their rampage when Starkey hooked up with receiver Scott Skiles (3 for 5, 31 yards, 1 TD) in the end zone for the final 30-7 victory.

Whitko pushes their record to 2-3 (2-1 TRC) on the season and host Northfield for their homecoming night next Friday at 7pm.

Friday's Football Forecast

By Andrew Ferrell

I'm feeling very optimistic for this week's glance into the crystal ball.  Columbia City and Whitko both sport interesting games and Churubusco, I think, finally has a challenging game; although I said that last week and they walked away with a 44-point win. With a 5-4 record, I hope my optimism pays off. Here's to you Whitley County... a 3-0 week!

Columbia City vs. DeKalb at 7pm

This game couldn't be any more intriguing, Columbia City is winless in conference play, but so is DeKalb.  Both teams have an overall conference rating in the low 50's and both teams are unpredictable.  However, this is Columbia City's homecoming night and they are ready to let some anger out from last Friday's game.  It's going to be a Maalox masher, in other words, a close battle.

CC 19 DeKalb 16

Churubusco @ Angola at 7:30pm

Last week, I thought the Eagles would have a much tougher game, but I was proven wrong.  My only regret was that I didn't pick the Eagles to win in a much larger fashion.  This week, Angola looks to be the best competition for 'Busco, but still not enough as the 'Busco offensive and defensive firepower is too much for the Hornets.

'Busco 24 Angola 14

Whitko @ Wabash at 7pm

Another big time battle as the Wildcats travel to Wabash. Ever since 2006, when the Apaches were added to the Wildcat schedule, the Apaches have never won. This doesn't change for Friday's game and if it were at home it would be a much larger win for the Wildcats.

The PAT kick was good by Burns making the score 22-0 with 5:31 remaining in the 2nd quarter. Our front line managed to keep Dekalb from moving the ball forcing another punt. Dekalb took the kickoff up the field and broke away down the sidelines for a 7 yard touchdown run the PAT was blocked by Indian Springs making the final score 43-6.

“We had several key players banged up and on the sidelines tonight, but our kids stepped up and filled those spots well,” said Coach Brian Bills.

Coach Bills also commented about turnovers, having 3 fumbles during the course of the game is too many; we need to work on ball control he said. Coach Ken Wolfe praised the defensive secondary for playing a heads up game and adjusting well. The coaching staff praised the total team effort put forth tonight.  Our linemen made the proper adjustments and did a good job this evening.

The 7th grade squad will host New Haven Middle School next Tuesday, September 22, at Indian Springs Middle School. Start time 5:00 p.m.

Wildcats unable to convert in fourth quarter

By Andrew Ferrell

Friday nights contest between the Whitko Wildcats and Manchester Squires brought a lot of questions about which Whitko team would show up. The largest question of the night was if it would be the Wildcats that bring the Squires to their first loss of the season?

As the last horn sounded, signaling the end of the game, that question was answered with an almost, but an almost wasn't good enough. The Squires escaped in the fourth quarter with a 16-6 win.

“We never gave up,” Whitko head coach Wayne Swender said. “We played hard and I’m proud of them.”

During the first drive of the game, Manchester's offense exposed a hole in the Wildcat defensive line when Squire running back Brady Miller (110 yds, 1TD) broke loose from out of the backfield and scrambled for a 67-yard TD. A botched extra point gave the Squires a quick 6-0 lead.

Needing to send a message back, Whitko's next possession did nothing but run out of gas. A sack of Wildcat quarterback Gabe Starkey (18-34, 180 yds) and a fumble recovered by Manchester's Austin Flack ended the Whitko opening drive.

Luckily, Whitko's defense stood tall throughout the first quarter and forced Manchester to punt the ball away on their next two drives.

“We just keep preaching that you have to play hard, play low, swarm the ball, and good things will happen,” Swender commented. “We played a lot better tonight than we did the first part of the season.”

Facing a 4th and long, late in the first, Whitko punted the ball away, but a roughing the kicker penalty on Manchester gave the Wildcats an fresh set of downs.  On the next play, Starkey connected on a 17-yard pass to sophomore receiver Derek Snep (10 catches, 150 yds) that gave Whitko red zone position.

After a few short runs by Wildcat Dakota Harmon, (11 attempts, 32 yds, 1TD) he finally scampered into the end zone on a 5-yard run. At 32 seconds left on the clock Whitko tied the game at 6-6.

The defensive battle continued in the second quarter as both teams forced each other to punt for much of the quarter. Manchester came across some good field position, late in the second quarter, and took advantage of the situation, tacking on three points from a field goal to close out the first half 9-6.

Both defenses held their end of the bargain through all of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth as both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm.

With 7:22 showing in the fourth, Whitko finally started making offensive progress.  An 11-yard pass from Starkey to junior receiver Brent Busz pushed the ball into scoring position. Two short runs for no gain put Whitko in a 4th and long.

Facing a fourth and long, Starkey looked as if he would be sacked, twisted out of three defenders and completed a pass to Snep on the fly.  Looking to score, with the ball on the Squire 17-yard line, two incomplete passes brought another fourth down and Starkey was eventually brought down.

“If he (Starkey) gets frustrated, he doesn’t show it,” Swender said referring to his quarterback.

As the final minutes melted away, Manchester looked to run the clock down, but junior running back Seth Brubaker broke free of the Whitko defensive line a rumbled 43-yards for the TD, ending the game 16-6.

“We have to come back Monday ready to work,” Swender concluded. “I told the team that they played hard and they have nothing to be ashamed of.”

Whitko drops to 1-3 (1-1 TRC) on the season and travels to Wabash for a meeting with the Apaches next Friday evening.

Final scores from week 4

Columbia City @ Homestead

It was a tough night for the Eagles on both sides of the ball as they lost to the Homestead Spartans 56-0.  The Spartans capitalized on many defensive stumbles by the Eagles, while the Eagles offense had trouble protecting quarterback Logan Reher in the pocket.

Columbia City drops to 0-4 (0-2 NHC) on the season and celebrates their homecoming next week against the DeKalb Barons.

Churubusco vs. Eastside

Busco proved tonight why they are a force to be reckoned with as they picked up a 58-14 victory over the Eastside Blazers.  Busco's junior running back Kyle Mathewson hauled in four touchdowns and 181 yards, while senior fullback Jordan Hamilton ate up 135 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Kyle Monk passed for 147 yards going 4-4 and threw for a score.

Adding to the mêlée, the Eagles defense intercepted the Eastside pass three times in the first quarter alone.

On homecoming night, the Eagles improved their record to 4-0 and travel to Angola next Friday night.

Friday's Football Forecast

It's that time of the week again, time for round 3 of my glance into the crystal ball.  Last week, Whitko proved me wrong with a 12-8 win over Southwood and I'm glad they did. I went 2-1 last week and look to have my first 3-0 week this week, improving my overall record to 6-3.

Whitko vs. Manchester at 7pm

Last year, Whitko lost to Manchester on a field goal in overtime 12-13. At that time, Manchester had a young team and Whitko rolled in with a senior latent team.  This year, the tables have turned and Whitko has the young team, while Manchester is seasoned... the same is true for the score.

Whitko 13 Manchester 12

Columbia City @ Homestead at 7pm

History suggests a tough road ahead for the Eagles at Homestead. The Eagles are headed into Homestead with an offense that averages 35 points and a defense that holds its opponents to 23 points. It is tough to go against my alma mater, but the numbers rarely lie. However, Whitko proved me wrong last week...maybe CC will do the same for me this week. Sorry CC fans!

Churubusco vs. Eastside at 7:30pm

'Busco's season finally begins with their battle against Eastside.  Eastside is coming into 'Busco with a running game that has dominated its competition. On the other hand, so has 'Busco's run game, plus its homecoming for the Eagles.  With a mixture of run and pass, I see a 4-0 record at the end of the night.

By Andrew Ferrell

The Whitko Wildcats and Columbia City Eagles tennis teams both picked up conference victories on Thursday night.

Whitko 3 Rochester 2

Whitko won their match over Rochester in a close 3-2 match as the top three Wildcat singles players won their individual matches.  In the No. 1 singles match, Wildcat Kurt Boggs defeated Rochester's Ryan Bohr 6-3,6-2.

Whitko's No. 2 singles match player Alex Winger stomped past the Zebra's Aaron Stuart 6-2, 7-5. In the final singles match, Wildcat Josh Larocque won his matches 6-1, 6-4, against Rochester's Jacob Schroder.

Whitko was not as lucky in doubles competition as both doubles teams fell to the Zebras.  The No. 1 doubles match saw the Rochester duo of Phil Keim and Cody Hershberger defeated Whitko's Anthony Habermann and Tyler Noragon, 6-3, 6-3.

In the last match of the night Whitko's No. 2 pair of Nathan Sherrard and Riley Cokl fell to Kyle Calhoun and Josh Calhoun of Rochester, 7-5, 6-1.

Columbia City 3 DeKalb 2

Columbia City's match against the DeKalb Barons paralleled Whitko's match against Rochester as the Eagles also picked up a 3-2 victory and all three varsity singles players won.

In the first match, No. 1 singles player Dylan Hinen took three matches to come from behind and pick up the win over DeKalb's  Nick Martin, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

No. 2 singles game placed Columbia City's  Matt Sewell over DeKalb's Austin Sparks, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Columbia City's Andy Moog had the easier time of the night in the singles' matches when he won, 6-1, 6-4.

Doubles play halted the Eagles with a loss in No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-4 as DeKalb's Culton Miller and Levi Copenhaver defeated Alan Murphy and Moog.

In the last doubles match, Eagles Derek Hinen and Gabe Boles lost to DeKalb's Michael Culler and Josh Martin, 6-7, 6-4, 6-1.

Whitko improves to 1-5 (1-0 TRC) on the season and has the TRC tournament on Saturday at home.  Columbia City pushes their record to 8-2 (1-1 NHC) on the season and have a make-up match Friday night against New Haven.

CC cross country finds their groove at the Marion Invitational

By Andrew Ferrell

The Columbia City Lady Eagles Cross Country team dance their way into a fourth place finish at the Marion Invitational on Saturday morning. The race featured some of the best schools in the area, with four of the twenty three teams falling in the top 25 state rankings, the headliner being No. 2 ranked Noblesville.

A high-spirited head coach Bob Fahl said, "It was a very big leap for us because we had many of our varsity runners clock massive personal records, beating them by at least a minute and a half."

The top runner for the Lady Eagles was Renee Menzie (18:59) who broke her own school record and finished in 4th place, leading all area runners.  Following Menzie was junior Laken Lefever (19:18), who also set a personal record and finished in the 11th overall spot.

Helping complete the fourth place team finish was Mercedes Zello (20:25) in 32nd place and a personal record, Carlee Hearld (20:51) in 41st, and Samantha Engle (21:49) in 70th.

"I'm flying high right now cause we are going to be in fine shape," Fahl concluded.

Eagles fly high over Panthers

By Andrew Ferrell

Just when you thought the Churubusco Eagles were a running team, you were proven wrong Friday night as the Eagles mixed in their passing attack with their running game.  It was a display of offensive firepower for the Eagles, as they picked up the hose and doused the Prairie Heights Panthers with a 53-20 victory.

“Last week we threw the ball three times and didn’t complete any,” Churubusco head coach Lee Etzler said. “We feel we have the capability to throw the ball a little bit and we need to do it once and awhile to back people off.”

In the first quarter, putting points on the scoreboard came often and early for the Eagles when quarterback Kyle Monk (93 passing yards, 1 TD) connected with junior Hunter Nicodemus for a big pass play that brought them within striking distance.  On the next play, Monk connected with senior Jordan Hamilton for a 36-yard touchdown reception, giving 'Busco the 6-0 lead with 9:02 left in the quarter.

After forcing a 3rd and out on the Panther second drive, 'Busco unleased a blaze of fire, from Hamilton and junior running back Kyle Mathewson, that consumed the Panthers defense.  Hamilton and Mathewson combined for 276 yards and five of Busco's eight touchdowns.

It was Hamilton who walked into the endzone towards the end of the first quarter on a 4th and goal stance, extending the 'Busco lead 14-0.  With 35 seconds left on the clock, sophomore Josh LeFever returned punt for 70-yards and the score, handing the Eagles a 22-0 first quarter lead.

The Churubusco offensive fire continued to spread during the second quarter as their running game pounded their way to the endzone on three consecutive drives. Hamilton scored first on a walk-in run, then Mathewson broke a 72-yard run for the score, and Hamilton followed with another scoot into the endzone, giving the Eagles a 41-6 halftime lead.

“It’s extremely important for us to threaten at more than one position,” Etzler noted. “We feel we have the kids to do that and we showed it a little bit tonight. It shows people that they have more than one person to defend.”

The fire started to die down a little in the second half for Busco, as the reserve team picked up plenty of experience, completing a 4th and goal in the redzone giving them a 47-6 lead in the middle of the third quarter.

Both teams' defenses battle back and forth forcing each other to punt, until early in the fourth, the Panther's quarterback Brennen North completed a 74-yard pass to junior Lance Feeney for the 47-13 score.

As time ran out in the fourth, Eagle sophomore Stuart Hilsmier pushed his way in for the score and North again hooked up with Feeney for the final 53-20 Churubusco victory.

“There was the potential for us to come out flat tonight and we wanted to address that early,” Etzler concluded. “We came out and played hard and they (Prairie Heights) gave us some things with throwing the ball.”

The Eagles improved to 3-0 on the season, making this their 5th consecutive 3-0 start. 'Busco comes back home next Friday to host the Eastside Blazers at 7:30pm.

Final scores from week 3

Columbia City at Bellmont

Columbia City greatly improved on the offensive side of the ball for the second straight week.  However, they were up against defending state champions Bellmont.  Columbia City hung in there for most of the game until eventually falling to Bellmont in a 41-20 score.

Columbia City falls to 0-3 on the season (0-1 NHC) and travels to Homestead for next Friday's game at 7pm.

Whitko at Southwood

The Wildcats established a balanced offensive night and took care of business early, picking up their first victory of the season.  The Wildcats scooped up 112 yards of rushing for the evening, spread across four running backs.

Wildcat quarterback Gabe Starkey threw for 94 yards and two touchdowns in the game, the first to receiver Scott Skiles for a 6-yard completion for the score. Starkey hooked up with receiver Chase Stouder on a 60-yard heave, taken to the house, on their next drive.

Whitko maintained a 12-0 lead through most of the game until Southwood answered with a touchdown and successful 2-point conversion late in the third quarter, ending the game at 12-8 in favor of the Wildcats.

Whitko improves to 1-2 on the season (1-0 TRC) and has their home opener in a rivalry game against Manchester on Friday.

Friday's Football Forecast

By Andrew Ferrell

Welcome back to week two of my look into the crystal ball for Friday night's contests. Sadly, last week, I went 1-2 and I hope to improve my record for this week, but it might be a little tricky with the three teams on the road and beginning conference play.

Churubusco @ Prairie Heights at 7:30 pm

Churubusco has not allowed any points in the last two weeks and Prairie Heights has only put up six points in the last two games.  I say its not much of a game for 'Busco and an easy pick for me.

'Busco 42 Prairie Heights 3

Columbia City @ Bellmont at 7pm

Now this game is much more complicated for me this week.  On paper it looks as if Bellmont will slip by the Eagles, especially after ascending to the #1 spot in class 3A football. However, the Eagles only lost to the defending state champion Braves 9-0 during last year's regular season. Columbia City needs a fourth quarter lead to pick up the victory, if not it could be another sad night for the Eagles.

Pending a fourth quarter lead... CC 21 Bellmont 17

No fourth quarter lead... CC 21 Bellmont 28

Whitko @ Southwood at 7pm

Whitko has struggled to find a running game in the last two weeks and I look for this to continue against Southwood.  However, Whitko quarterback Gabe Starkey is starting to settle into the season and the Knights lost a lot to graduation last year. Again, another tough pick and as tough as it is...

Whitko 10 Southwood 21

ISMS 7th grade football victorious over Summit

By Jennifer Zartman Romano

The Indian Springs Middle School 7th grade football team defeated Summit Middle School tonight with a score of 18-6, bringing their season record to 2-0.

The defensive line included Kohle Hoeppner, LG Whetstone, Drew Cummins and Michael Simmons did an impressive job of shutting down the run, according to coach Mike Roy.

“Linebackers Drew Odell and Braden Meyer, as well as corner backs Josh Whitehead and Justin Bachelder, punished the ball carrier repeatedly,” Roy said this evening.

“Our safeties Beau Barkley and TJ Yagle did a great job,” added Roy.

“Offensively we never got the passing game going, but the running game was working perfectly,” said Roy. “The Eagles never gave up the ball via a punt tonight. We managed to keep out drives alive.”

“Braden Meyer at running back did an outstanding job moving the ball,” continued Roy. “Josh Whitehead at quarterback scored all 3 touchdowns on runs. His ability to break tackles and find the opening and his speed allowed us to run outside.”

ISMS 7th grade coaches include Brian Bills, Mike Roy and Ken Wolfe.

“We’re very proud of the effort our kids put forth tonight,” added Roy.
