Hellen B. Bower, 70

Hellen B. Bower, 70, of Angola passed away at 2:01 a.m. Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at Northern Lakes Nursing and Rehabilitation, Angola.  
Born on September 20, 1939 in Bennington, Michigan, she was the daughter of Wilbur Brozie and Pearl Trimmer (Harrison) Bower.
She was born and raised in Michigan and then moved to Texas and in 2000 moved to Columbia City. In 2004 she moved to Angola to be closer to her sons.  
She attended Monroe High School, Monroe, Michigan.  She was a Driving Instructor for AAA Motorist Association, as well as a volunteer at the Peabody Library, Columbia City.  She attended the Columbia City United Methodist Church and previously attended the Robin Wood Baptist Church in Seagoville, Texas.
Survivors include her 4 sons, Jonathan (Diane) Killion of Indianapolis; Andrew Killion of Angola; David Killion of Powell, Tennessee; Jeffery Killion of Angola; 1 brother, John Bower of Monroe, Michigan; 2 sisters, Joyce Mainzinger of Monroe, Michigan, and Jeanne Gonia of Las Vegas, Nevada; 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.  
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Vida.

Richard L. “Rick” Fetters, 89

Richard L. “Rick” Fetters, 89, of rural Kimmell, died at 6:30 a.m. Monday, February 22, 2010 at his home.
He was born October 5, 1929, in Washington Township, Noble County, a son of Charles Floyd and Leila Zoe (Shew) Fetters. He graduated from Wolf Lake High School in 1939.
On February 19, 1950 he was united in marriage to Betty J. Adams. They have made their home on a farm in Washington Township, Noble County.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army Signal Corps during World War II. He was honorably discharged January 7, 1946.
A retired farmer, he served 44 years on the Washington Township Advisory Board.
He was a member of Ormas Baptist Church, Columbia City American Legion Post #98 and a charter member of Wolf Lake V.F.W. #4717.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Betty; two sons, Duane (Trudy) Fetters of Kimmell and Dennis (Darlene) Fetters of Columbia City; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; a brother, Roger Fetters of Syracuse; and a sister, Nancy Lenegar of Sun City Center, Florida.
He was preceded in death by two great granddaughters, Tara Lykins and Vanessa Lee; a brother, Robert Fetters; and four sisters, Eileen Gaerte, Ellen Gilbert, Jean Paulus and Dora Hemund.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
The burial will be in Salem Cemetery, Wilmot with military honors presented by American Legion Post #98.
Preferred memorials are to Ormas Baptist Church.

Max Earl Conner, 77

Max Earl Conner, 77, a former resident of Roanoke, died at 11:20 pm Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010 in the Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
He was born on June 6, 1932 in Fort Wayne, a son of Russell E. and LaVaonne Vogely Conner.  His formative years were spent in Fort Wayne, where he attended Harrison Hill Elementary School and graduated from Central High School.
After completing his education, he joined his father in the operation of the Conner Chevolet Agency in Roanoke where he worked for twenty-five years.  Later he worked at McJon Photo, Xolox and the Ellison Bakery.
On March 1, 1953, he was united in marriage to Arlene Sue Yoder and they made their home in Roanoke until moving to Heritage Place in Warren two years ago.
He was a member of the College Park United Brethren Church in Huntington and  the Gold Wing Road Riders Association Chapter G.
The surviving relatives include his wife, Sue; a daughter, Darlene (Phillip) Burkett, Huntington; to grandchildren, Jeremy (Jessica) Burkett and Carissa Burkett.
The funeral service will be held at 11 am Wednesday with the Rev. James Moser, officiating in the Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.  The burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery in Roanoke at a later date.  The visitation will be from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm Tuesday and one hour before the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mildred Lucille Bridge, 103

Mildred Lucille Bridge, 103, died Saturday, February 20, 2010 at 4:35 p.m. at the Lutheran Life Villages in Fort Wayne.  
Born on June 21, 1906 in Whitley County, she was the daughter of Joseph E. and Grace (Harshbarger) Schinbeckler.
She was born and raised in Whitley County, then moved with her family for a short time to California.  She returned to Indiana, living in Allen County until the time of her marriage.  On July 27, 1928 she married Arlo C. Bridge in Aboite Township, Allen County. They moved to Fort Wayne for a short time and eventually settled on the family farm in Allen County.  
A graduate of Arcola High School with the Class of 1925 she then went on to pursue her nursing degree, graduating from Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing with the Class of 1928.  She worked as a private duty nurse in addition to being a homemaker and mother. She was a member of the Lutheran School of Nursing Alumni Association, Aldersgate Methodist Church, Aldersgate United Methodist Women, and a former member of Saturn Christian Church.
She is survived by her son, Dwight (Penny) Bridge of Lebanon, IN; daughter, Karen (Neil) Cholminsky of Thorndale, PA; grandsons, Scott (Maryann) Bridge of Columbus, IN, Todd Bridge of Greenwood, IN and Kyle Greenwood of Easton, PA; granddaughters, Cindy (Rick) Watson of Noblesville, IN, Lisa Thomas of Evansville, IN and Kim Longoria of Austin TX.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Arlo C. Bridge on May 8, 1978, son, Irle Bridge, grandson, Kevin Bridge and brother, Franklin Schinbeckler.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 from 1-3 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, IN with funeral service to follow at 3:00 p.m.  Rev. Martha P. Guisinger, 90

Martha P. Guisinger, 90, of Columbia City, died at 10:20 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2010, at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. 
Born on June 26, 1919, in Corydon, she was the daughter of Cole and Nolena Breeden.
She was raised in Corydon until her teenage years when her family moved to Fort Wayne.  On September 26, 1939, she was married to Donald W. "Dutch" Guisinger.  In 1951, they moved to their present home at Tri-Lakes, north of Columbia City.
A graduate of Northside High School, she was employed with Magnavox in Fort Wayne for over 25 years retiring as a group leader.  She was an active member of the Magnavox Century Club. 
She was an avid shuffle board player in her younger years and was also a gifted knitter and crocheter, making a new afghan every week.
She is survived by her daughter, June A. Keiser (Mike Craig) of Columbia City; son, Carl (Nancy) Guisinger, Fort Wayne;  3 granddaughters, Deanna (Jon) Kissinger and Tara (Bruce) VanHouten of Columbia City, and Cory (Bobby) Schweizer of Leo; grandson, Travis (Angela) Guisinger of Fort Wayne; 9 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Rosie Breeden. 
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald "Dutch" Guisinger on March 7, 2001; 3 brothers, Frank, William and Charles Breeden.

Mary M. “May” Fox , 101

Mary M. “May” Fox , 101, of South Whitley, died at 6:35 a.m. Friday, February 19, 2010 at Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester where she had been a resident.
She was born June 2, 1908 in Chicago, Illinois, a daughter of Robert and Emily (Piper) Richter.  Her formative years were spent in Chicago where she graduated from high school.  She was an honor student at Gulf Park College, Biloxi, Mississippi, and was also the class president.
After graduation she returned to Chicago to pursue further schooling in secretarial skills.  The school was located next to Orchestra Hall where she met her future musician husband, Hugo E. Fox, who became the principle bassoonist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.  They were married on June 2, 1930, making their home in Chicago.  
In 1949, they moved permanently to the family’s summer retreat in South Whitley.  There they co-founded Fox Products Corporation, a world renowned manufacturer of bassoons and oboes.  Mr. Fox died December 29, 1969.
Her memberships included South Whitley United Methodist Church.
Surviving relatives include a son, Alan H. (Pamela) Fox, South Whitley and daughter, Susan M. Fox, Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren, Karen Festa, John Langreck, Ted Langreck and Jill Fox; 3 great-grandchildren, Lawrence Festa IV, Benjamin Langreck and Philip Langreck.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, James Richter, Fort Worth.
The funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Monday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley with Pastor Robert Barton of South Whitley United Methodist Church officiating.  The burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Dixie Mullins, 78

Dixie Mullins, 78, of Columbia City, passed away at 3:19 p.m. Friday, February 12, 2010 at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.   
Born on July 1, 1931, in Floyd County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Johnie D. and Maxie Rhode (Lawson) Caudill.
She moved from Kentucky to Huntington in 1957, later moving to Columbia City in 1960.
On June 30, 1947, she married Glines Mullins in Floyd County, Kentucky, who passed away March, 1981.  
She was a waitress, cook and bartender at Bamboo Lounge, Wonder Bar, Hallway, 10 Pen, Billy Goat Tavern and Moose Lodge. She was an avid coffee drinker, loved people and helping people, cooking and cleaning fish.
Survivors include her 4 children, Sundra "Sunni" (Stephen) Watson of Columbia City; Debra Lynn (Micheal Strifler) Mullins of Columbia City; Jeffrey Glen (Sheila) Mullins of Columbia City; Marty Johneine (Todd) Clingerman of Columbia City; 3 grandchildren, Travis E. (Heather Civiletto) Grunawalt of Columbia City; S. Wesley Watson of Fort Wayne and Grady L. Clingerman of Columbia City; 1 step-grandson, Christopher Strifler of Columbia City; 2 great-grandchildren, Cole Civiletto of Columbia City and infant girl due in April; 6 brothers & sisters, Jack Caudill of Mount Vernon, Illinois; Dorothy Hand of Eden, North Carolina; Mary Hamilton of London, Kentucky; Maudie Osborne of Hi Hat, Kentucky; Benjamin Caudill of Prestonburg, Kentucky; Jimmie Caudill of Columbus, Missouri; several beloved nieces & nephews.

John W. Hancock, Jr., 76

John W. Hancock, Jr., 76, of Columbia City, died at 2:53 p.m. on Thursday, February 11, 2010, at Parkview Whitley Hospital.  
Born on March 28, 1933, in Fort Wayne he was the son of John W. and Martha (Linvill) Hancock, Sr.
He graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1952 and spent the majority of his lifetime in Columbia City.  
He served in the US Army from 1953-1955, earning the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and Korean Service Ribbon.
He was the former owner of the Columbia Theater and he managed Bituminous Materials/Elf Asphalt in Columbia City and Warsaw from 1965-1992.  After his retirement, he worked at Wilbys Mini-Mart in Warsaw.  
An avid fisherman and bird watcher, he was a member of the Moose Lodge #3000, was a volunteer fireman with the Columbia City Fire Department, former member of the Elks Lodge and American Legion. John was a long-time member of the AHRA (American Hotrod Association) and won a National Title one year and another year finished runner up. He also held track records at the Avilla Raceways for many years.
He is survived by his long-time companion, Janet Ross of Columbia City ; daughter, Lynne (Roger) Drudge of Columbia City; son, Nick (Tamera) Hancock of Huntington; son, Lowell (Barbara) Hancock of Centennial, Colorado; sister, Carol Loos of Rome City; 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.  
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter, Julie Hancock.
Visitation with the family will take place on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 from 3-7 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home with a Celebration of Life Service following at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be private.

Eva Mae Geiger, 86

Eva Mae Geiger, 86, of Columbia City, died at 10 a.m. Sunday, February 14, 2010 at The Oaks Living Center where she had been a resident since February 22, 2002.
She was born June 13, 1923 in Whitley County, Indiana a daughter of Taylor and Wilda (Clay) Zumbrun. Her formative years were spent in Noble County. She graduated from Wolf Lake High School.
On June 15, 1944 she was united in marriage to Walter Wayne Geiger. They made their home on a farm in Thorncreek Township, Whitley County. Mr. Geiger died May 12, 2007.
She drove bus for Thorncreek School and retired in 1985 from reading meters for REMC.
Her memberships included Blue River Church of the Brethren.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Edward E. (Karen) Geiger and Clay W. (Sandy) Geiger, both of Columbia City; six grandchildren, Michael (Shane) Geiger, David Geiger, Ryan (Darcy) Geiger, Todd (Stacy) Geiger, Adam Geiger and Jody (Chris) Askins; and 12 great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Zumbrun and Harold “Spike” Zumbrun.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Naomi I. Weeks, 96, of Columbia City, died at 5:51 a.m. Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at her home south of Columbia City.
She was born May 7, 1913, in Manistee County, Michigan, a daughter of Thurlo Cleveland and Effie Mae (Madison) Hile. As a young girl, her family moved to a farm near South Whitley. In 1928, they moved to Columbia City. She completed her education at Columbia City High School.
On April 4, 1931, she was united in marriage to George R. Weeks in Lagrange County. In 1941, they moved to their home on Brownwood Avenue, Columbia City. Mr. Weeks died April 21, 1994. Naomi has made her home with her daughter, Sandra, south of Columbia City since September 2000.
She was employed at Blue Bell, Viking and retired from Dana in Churubusco.
Surviving relatives include two sons and a daughter, George Richard (Jean) Weeks of Arcola, Kent (Nancy) Weeks of Port Charlotte, Florida, and Sandra Bates of Columbia City; six grandchildren, Robert (Sherry) Weeks, Katy Weeks, Stacy (Matt) Ledington, Bill Snyder, Mike Snyder and Rick (Penny Myer) Snyder; and six great-grandchildren, Andy, Matt & Erica Weeks, Erica & Stephanie Chin, Gared (Trisha) Snyder.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Richard Matthew Weeks; three brothers, Harold, Max and Ronald Hile; and four sisters, Claudia Dipert, Yvonne Jean Betzner, Cleo Rody and Lenna Collins.

Dorothy M. Crampton, 82, of Columbia City, passed away at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, February 11, 2010 at her home.  
Born on September 22, 1927 in Larwill, she was the daughter of Oscar Earl and Alice Marie (Billman) Julian.
She was a life long resident of Whitley County.  She graduated from Columbia City Joint High School with the class of 1946.  
On October 26, 1944, she married Walter B. Crampton, Jr. in Covington, Kentucky.  She retired in 1991 from Magnavox as the supervisor in the paint shop.  She was a member of Tri-Lakes Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Walter B. Crampton, Jr. of Columbia City; 5 children, Ken (Dorie) Crampton of Columbia City; Treasa Crampton of Columbia City; Noreen (Glen) Kemery of Playa del Rey, California; Dennis (Fran) Crampton of San Diego, California; Michael (Nancy) Crampton of Columbia City; a sister, Treva Wolfe of Columbia City and 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, James and Paul Julian; sisters, Anna Imes and Bessie Matheny.

She graduated from Coesse High School with the Class of 1937.
She married to Raymond Lee Clark on June 22, 1940 in Fort Wayne. She was a homemaker and assisted her husband on the family farm. She spent the majority of her lifetime in Whitley County and was an active member of Westview Alliance Church, Fort Wayne.
Survivors include 4 children, Larry (Pat) Clark, Manistique, Michigan, Susan (Michael) Hughes, Fort Wayne, Luann (Alan) Sederlund, Fort Wayne, and Ranee (Duane) Laube, DeWitt, Michigan; 6 grandchildren, David (Marty) Clark, Brad (Cate) Hughes, Jody (Tim) Rayl, Ashlynn (Darrell) Nichter, Tyler Sederlund and Mason Laube; 5 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Phil (Bertha) Roberson, Fort Wayne and Rex (Barb) Roberson, Columbia City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Raymond Lee Clark on April 25, 2008, great granddaughter, Angelina Rayl, 3 brothers, Dale, Guy and H. Lee Roberson and a sister, Grace Karst.

Ronald Wayne Pratt, 49, of Columbia City, IN passed away at 11:50 p.m., Thursday, February 11, 2010 at his home.  
Born on November 13, 1960 in Columbia City, he was the son of Russell Wayne and Heddy (Dietrich) Pratt.
He has lived his entire lifetime in the Churubusco and Columbia City areas.  He attended Churubusco High School.  
On May 12, 1979, he married Debra D. McDevitt at Grace Lutheran Church, Columbia City.  
He worked at North American Van Lines, T&E Construction, Pratt Construction, Bunn Trucking and Lentz Enterprizes.  He was the Columbia City Football Booster president in 1999 and loved Columbia City High School Eagle Football and watching the Indianapolis Colts.  He loved kids and spending all the time he could with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Debra D. Pratt of Columbia City; son, Braden (Amanda) Pratt of Columbia City; daughter, Tiffany (Jeffry Goddard) Pratt of Warsaw; granddaughter, Raegan Pratt of Columbia City; parents, Russell and Heddy Pratt of St. James City, Florida; brother, Russell (Chris) Pratt, Jr. of Columbia City; several nieces & nephews and great nieces & nephews.  
He was preceded in death by his brother, Lynn Pratt.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at the Columbia City F.O.P. Lodge from 1-4 p.m., Sunday, February 21, 2010.  In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be given in memory of Mr. Pratt to the Raegan Elizabeth Pratt College Fund.  Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Ronald Dale Carpenter, 57, of Columbia City, passed away at 4:45 a.m. on Tuesday, February 9, 2010, at Miller's Merry Manor, Inc. Columbia City.  
Born on December 26, 1952 in Columbia City, he was the son of Richard E. Carpenter and Juanita J. (Henline) Carpenter.  
A lifetime resident of Columbia City, he graduated from Columbia City Joint High School with the Class of 1971.  Ron's mother, Juanita Jean (Henline) Carpenter was certified in 1979 as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), making Ron a direct descendant of Captain Joel Loomis who served in the American Revolution.  Captain Loomis' discharge papers included the personal thank you of General George Washington.  
On September 12, 2009, he married Gwendolene "Bethie" Johnson.  He was an active member of the Columbia City Elks Lodge #1417 where he served as secretary from 1990-1997.  He received the Elk of the Year Award in 1993-1994.
Survivors include his wife, Gwendolene I. "Bethie" Carpenter of Columbia City, IN; father, Richard E. Carpenter of Columbia City, IN; 2 brothers, Ricky Alan (Nanci) Carpenter of Oviedo, FL and Rex L. Carpenter of Columbia City, IN;  1 sister, Karla May Jordan of Westminster, CO; and 5 nieces and 5 nephews.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Juanita Jean Carpenter on April 7, 2002.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Friday, February 12, 2010 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 1:00 p.m.  Pastor James Clifford of Laud Christian Church officiating, burial to follow at Nolt Cemetery.

Allison A. Silk, 45, of Fort Wayne, died Monday, February 8, 2010 at 7:14 a.m. at the home of her son in Columbia City.  
Born on April 16, 1964, in Fort Wayne, Ind, she was the daughter of Albert and Mary (McCord) Silk.
A lifetime resident of Fort Wayne, Ind. she was a  1982 graduate of Bishop Dwenger High School.  She was employed with Titan Metal Spinning as the General Manager for 12 years.  
She is survived by her son, Cory (Tiffany Northup) Sorg of Columbia City; daughter, Candyce Trent of Fort Wayne; father and step-mother, Albert and Rita Silk of Columbia City; sister, Shelley (Kenneth) Vogelgesang of Fort Wayne; 2 grandsons, Kaiden and Tyler Folds of Fort Wayne; and her beloved cat, Bert.  She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Silk and brother, David Silk.

Alisa J. Campbell, 48, of Albion died Monday, February 1, 2010 at her residence.  
Born  on February 10, 1961, in Jacksonville, FL, she was the daughter of Harry and Clara (Spevak) Neihaus.
She lived the majority of her life in California, moving to Larwill, Ind. in 1990 and has been a resident of Albion, Ind. since 1997.  She attended Columbia High School in Maplewood, NJ.  She worked as a waitress at various restaurants, but was also a devoted mother to her son.  
Survivors include her son, Jesse S. Campbell of Albion;  father, Harry (Shashana) Neihaus of Israel; brother, Alex (Patricia) Neihaus of Southborough, MA;  former husband, Jeff Campbell of Albion;  and half-sister, Randa Wheat of Texas.  She was preceded in death by her mother Clara Neihaus.

Carter Lee Evans, newborn

Carter Lee Evans, eight days old, passed away Thursday, February 4, 2010 at Dupont Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Born on January 24, 2010, in Fort Wayne, he is the beloved son of Robert J. and Shannon Marie (Mills) Evans of Columbia City.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Maddison M. Evans and a brother, Cameron J. Evans both of Columbia City; grandparents, Rick and Tammy Mills of Larwill, Robert and Barbara Evans of Columbia City; great-grandparents, LaVan and Barb Mills of Montpelier, Frank and Pauline Rice of Upland, Indiana, and Ruth Sitton of Arcola.
A sister, Kathryn Marie Evans, preceded him in death on May 18, 2002.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. with one hour of calling prior to the service on Monday, February 8, 2010 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home.

Ola Marie Cornett, 85, of Columbia City passed away at 10:00 p.m. February 3, 2010 at her home.
Born on November 21, 1924 in Corbin , KY , she was the daughter of Delbert and Bessie Catherine (Cornn) Reynolds.
She lived in Keavy , KY until 1980, moving to Roanoke and since 1991 living in Columbia City .  She married John "J.B." Cornett in September, 1946 at Corbin , KY. She was a homemaker and a member of Locust Grove Church of Christ, Keavy , KY.
Survivors include her 4 children, Betty Lou (Don Dobbert) Slucher of Columbia City, Linda S. (Gerald) LaRue of Rainbow City, AL, Bill (Kathi) Cornett of Lilburn, GA; Lora Ann (David) Elliott of Hartselle, AL; 1 sister, Ella (Earl) Gunkel of Taylor Mill, KY; 2 brothers, Charles (Rose) O. Reynolds of Loveland, OH and James (Janice) Reynolds of Milford, OH; 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, former husband, John "J.B." Ernest Eldon Harper, 84, of Columbia City , IN passed away at 6:30 p.m. February 2, 2010 at his home.  
Born on December 28, 1925 in Warsaw , Kosciusko County , IN he was the son of Samuel W. and Eva C. ( Anderson ) Harper.
He lived in Phoenix , AZ from 1968 to 1999 then moved to Whitley County area.  He attended Coesse and Sidney Schools , graduating from Leesburg High School , Leesburg, with the Class of 1944. He served with the United States Navy during WWII from 1944-1946. On January 19, 2000, he married Martha M. Loe in Cook County , Chicago , IL .  He retired from Montgomery Wards Electronic Service, Phoenix , AZ serving from 1968 to 1990.  He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where he served as a High Priest and American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Martha M. Harper of Columbia City; 7 daughters, Pacienca Pung of Columbia City, Sheila (Harry) Wehner of Fowlerville, MI, Anna M. Knudsen of Phoenix, AZ, Vickie (Kenneth) L. Slade of Tuscon, AZ, Cynthia (Mel) L. Slade of El Paso, TX, Linda (Tim) L. Angle of Phoenix, AZ, Francine (Don) F. Freddie Wayne Arnold, 54, rural Columbia City, died Tuesday, February 2, 2010.
He was born April 6, 1955 in Warsaw, Indiana a son of Harold I. and Phyllis J. (Ewers) Arnold. His formative years were spent in He graduated from Columbia City Joint High School.
He was employed at North American Van Lines, Auto Bumper Exchange in New Haven, was a life insurance agent and real estate agent, recently working with Myers Lawn Service.
His memberships included the Due Guard Lodge #278 Free & Accepted Masons.
Surviving relatives include two sisters and a brother, Linda (Lynn) Orcutt of Larwill, Joseph Lee (Sherry) Arnold and Rita (H. Kent “Nub”) Waugh, both of Columbia City; and several nieces and nephews.
His parents preceded him in death.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
A Masonic service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday by the Due Guard Lodge #278 F. & A. M.
The burial will be in Thorn Cemetery, Ormas with military honors presented by Whitley County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard.

Martin Keith Ousley, 46

Martin Keith Ousley, 46, of Columbia City, died at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at his home. He had been in failing health since April 2001.
He was born August 17, 1963 in Columbia City, Indiana a son of Claude and Vonda E. (Tillman) Ousley. At the age of 5, his family moved to Union Township, Whitley County from Pierceton. He graduated from Columbia City Joint High School, Olivet Nazarene College and Indiana State University, majoring in Geology.
On August 18, 1990 he was united in marriage to Teresa R. Dillander. They made their home in Clarksville until 1995 when they moved to Arnold, Missouri. In the Summer of 2005 they moved to their home in Columbia City.
He was employed at Defense Mapping Agency in Louisville, Kentucky until 1993, the United States Postal Service in Louisville from 1993 – 1994 and retired in 2005 from National Geo-Spacial Agency with 10 years of service.
His memberships included New Hope Wesleyan Church.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Teresa; two sons, Ryan Ousley and Adam Ousley, both at home; his parents, Claude & Vonda Ousley of Columbia City; and three sisters, Janie (Curt) Salisbury of Prestonsburg KY, Brenda (Rick) Reynolds and Teri (Chad) Fields, both of Columbia City.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at New Hope Wesleyan Church, 971 N 400 W, Columbia City.

Jack D. Janney, 69

Jack D. Janney, 69, of Columbia City, died at 11:05 p.m. on Monday, February 1, 2010, at Kosciusko Community Hospital in Warsaw.  
He was born on January 23, 1941 in Portsmouth, Ohio, to Paul and Louella (Benson) Janney.
Born and raised in Ohio, he moved to Columbia City in 1965.  A graduate of Portsmouth High School with the class of 1959, he attended Indiana University-Bloomington graduating with the class of 1963 with a Bachelors in Health and Physical Education. On December 18, 1963, he married Patricia Greene in Bloomington.  He went on to receive a Masters in Education from St. Francis University, Fort Wayne in 1972.  
He taught at Columbia City Joint High School from 1965-1996, where he coached football, baseball and wrestling as well as taught social studies, geography, history and was the drivers education coordinator.  
After retiring from teaching, he worked for several years at ACE Hardware.  
He was a member of Columbia City United Methodist Church.  
For over 25 years, he was an active member of the Indiana High School Football Coaches Association.
He is survived by his two daughters, Emily (Ben) Romine of Columbia City and Pam (Frank) Gatto of Riverview, Florida; a son, Chad (Karen) Janney of Fishers, Indiana; five grandchildren, including Hayden and Tyler Janney, Madison and Hannah Schuck and Grace Romine; three sisters, Barbara Coriell, Polly Motter and Dinah Janney and a brother, Jerry Janney.  
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Patricia Janney, on August 7, 2006.
Visitation will be on Thursday, February 4, 2010 from 4-8 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Dr., Columbia City, IN.  Funeral service will take place on Friday, February 5, 2010 at 11 a.m. with calling one hour prior at the funeral home.  Pastors Paul Arnold and Jean Ness of Columbia City United Methodist Church officiating.

Penny Lee Hoag, 58

Penny Lee Hoag, 58, of Columbia City, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010.
A lifelong resident of Columbia City, she was born on May 24, 1951, at Whitley County Memorial Hospital, Columbia City. She attended Marshall Memorial School, Coesse Elementary School and graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1969.
She married Jerry Hoag in 1971 and established a home on South Walnut Street, with Liz and Suzie Walker. Jerry and Penny later bought a house on Spencer Street where they began their family and raised four children, Michelle, Jacob, Joseph, and Jessica. They later moved to their dream home west of Columbia City on her father's farm.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed life's simple pleasures, such as gardening, planting flowers, taking short day trips with her husband and spending time with her nine grandchildren.
She was a loving mother and wife, who rounded her personality with a strong intellect and at times a playful and mischievous attitude. Because of her strong Christian values and beliefs, her family takes comfort in knowing that she is now walking the streets of gold with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Surviving relatives include her husband, Jerry; two daughters, Michelle (Jeremy) Lahr and Jessie (Jerry) Weidner; two sons, Jake (Meggan) Hoag and Joe (Colleen) Hoag; mother, Ellen Schaefer; three brothers, Gary (Stacey) Schaefer, Richard Schaefer and Joe (Jodi) Schaefer; and nine grandchildren. All survivors are of Columbia City. She was preceded in death by her father, Earl Schaefer; and brother, Russell Schaefer.
Celebration of Life is 7 p.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, where visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Luella M. Hawk, 95

Luella M. Hawk, 95, of Columbia City,  passed away at 1:30 p.m. February 1, 2010 at Sycamore Village, Fort Wayne.
Born on October 24, 1914 in Meade County, Kansas, she was the daughter of John Sherman and Ella May (Landis) Francis.
She lived in Kansas during her formative years, from 1932-1935 she traveled with her career then moved to Fort Wayne, and then to her and her husbands farm in Union Township in the mid to late 1950's. She graduated from Satanta High School, Satanta, Kansas, with the Class of 1932, and attended Friends University, Wichita, Kansas for two years, earning an associates degree in Business.
On December 22, 1935, she married Theodore "Ted" M. Hawk in North West, Indiana.
She was a homemaker and a member of the D.A.R.-Coumbia City Col. Augustin de la Balme Chapter, where she served as Regeant from 1982-1986, and the Whitley County Historical Society. A semi-professional genealogist, she completed numerous genealogy records for the D.A.R, as well as completing a listing of all the cemeteries in Whitley County. She also created and set up the school library for the former Coesse School.
Survivors include her three daughters, Electa Jane (Vern) Hawk-Hueske of Columbia City; Frances "Jackie" (Jerry) Long of Warsaw; Jo Ann (James) Espich of Port Charlotte, Florida; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Theodore "Ted" M. Hawk, son, E. Theodore Hawk, a grandson, William Stewart Long; four Brothers, Carl, John, Frank, and L.E. Francis; and a sister, Sadie Stepp.
Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, IN.
