Debra K. (Nicholson) Houser, 49

Debra K. (Nicholson) Houser, 49, of Columbia City died in November. 

She was born on January 15, 1960, to William C. and Margaret G. (Huffman) Nicholson in Encino, California.

She attended Woodlan High School in Woodburn, Indiana. 

A Whitley County resident for the past three years, she was raised in Harlan, Indiana, and had previously lived in Woodburn, Indiana, and French Lick, Indiana. 

She was a member of the Columbia City American Legion Post #98. She was employed by the Columbia City Post & Mail newspaper.

She is survived by her daughter Amber (J.D. Downam) Kunkel of Fort Wayne; 2 sons, Austin Kunkel of Churubusco and Garrett Houser of Fort Wayne; mother and step-father, Margaret (Ervin) Bellis; two sisters, Karen (Glen) Caprioni of Fort Wayne and Kathy Nicholson of Harlan, Indiana; two brothers, Bill (Rita) Nicholson of Fort Wayne and Bob (Jennifer) Nicholson of Fairborn, Ohio; granddaughters, Bryah, Morgan and Kiersten Abbott of Fort Wayne; and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her father, William Nicholson, Sr.

Visitation with the family will take place on Saturday, January 9, 2010 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. with a memorial service to begin at 12:00 p.m at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home in Columbia City.  Rev. Barbara Kenley from Grace Presbyterian Church, Fort Wayne, will be officiating.

Patti Gamble, 45

Patti Gamble, 45, of Columbia City died following a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was a 1982 graduate of Columbia City High School.

On February 27, 1996, she married Galen D. Gamble. She was a devoted mother to her son Garet.

She is survived by her husband, Galen D. Gamble and 12-year-old son, Garet Gamble of Columbia City; mother, Patsy Bechtold of Fort Wayne; brother, Ron Bechtold of Larwill; cherished sister, Karla (Steven) Stolz of Columbia City; brother, Monte (Dana) Bechtold; and father, Carl Bechtold of Huntington. In addition to her family she leaves behind her close friend Susan (Snider) Brown of Columbia City. She was a loving aunt to eleven nieces and twelve nephews.

At Mrs. Gamble's request there will be no viewing or services. Arrangements have been entrusted to DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, Columbia City.

Janet E. Halsey, 62

Janet E. Halsey, 62, of rural Garrett, died at 11:30 a.m. Monday, December 28, 2009 at her home.

She was born June 26, 1947 in Fort Wayne, IN a daughter of Chester C. and Lois J.(Hull) DeLong. Her formative years were spent in LaOtto. She graduated from Avilla High School in 1965.
She was employed by Cooper Standard Automotive in Auburn for 38 years. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Garrett.
Surviving relatives include four children, Penny Adams, Garrett, Darryl Albright, Auburn, Scott (Joni) Albright, Auburn, and Jessica Albright, Garrett; three sisters, Karen Geiger, Churubusco, Connie DeLong, Fort Wayne and Cindy Cochran, Fort Wayne; two brothers, Larry Hull of TX and Jack (Barbara) DeLong, Fort Wayne; 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with one hour of visitation prior to the service.
Preferred memorials are to American Heart Association.

Billy Joe Myers, 77

Billy Joe Myers, 77, of Ormas, died at 9:20 a.m. Monday December 28, 2009 at Parkview Main Hospital, Fort Wayne.

He was born January 1, 1932 in Laketon, Indiana a son of Mont and Lela Fern (Bush) Myers. His formative years were spent in South Whitley. He attended South Whitley High School.
On January 11, 1949 he entered the U.S. Army. He served with the 27th Infantry in Korea. He received his honorable discharge June 23, 1952.
Returning to the area, he worked with his father and brother at Myers Sawmill, Wolf Lake. He worked at Rae Magnet Wire for 17 years and was a long haul trucker for twenty years.
His memberships included VFW Post 4717, Wolf Lake, American Legion Post 98, Columbia City and former member of Noble Twp. Fire Department.
Surviving relatives include two children, Anthony Myers and LeahBeth Myers both of Wolf Lake; three grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; his former wife and friend, Patricia Myers, Wolf Lake; two brothers, Robert (Delores) Myers, Pelsor, AR and James (Verlindia) Myers, Urbana and one sister, Shirley (Jack) Burson, Mesa, AZ
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Bonnie Gage, Eileen Wynns and Betty Myers and two brothers, Jack and Larry Myers.
The visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.

Charles Raymond Kumfer, 78

Charles Raymond Kumfer, 78, died Monday, December 28, 2009 at 4:36 a.m. at Lutheran Hospital Fort Wayne.  Born on August 8, 1931 in Fort Wayne , IN he was the son of George and Margaret (Wolf) Kumfer.

A 1949 graduate of Central Catholic High School in Fort Wayne, he went on to serve his country in the US Army.  In 1955 he married Wilma Hambrock at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fort Wayne.  He was employed at General Electric and for more than 25 years he was a professional truck driver working for Spector and Brothers Express, retiring in 1987.  He also worked for Washington Center Elementary School , Columbia City , after his retirement.

He was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church, the American Legion Post #98 in Columbia City as well as Teamsters Local #414.  Born and raised in Fort Wayne , he has been a resident of Whitley County since 1965.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Wilma Kumfer, Columbia City; sons, Larry (Terrie) Kumfer, Fort Wayne; Gilbert (Lisa Sweet) Kumfer; Jeff (Tammy) Kumfer of Columbia City; daughter, Vicki (Rick) Schrader of Columbia City; son, Andy (Sue) Kumfer of Columbia City; daughter, Gemma (Wesley) Funsch of Florence, SC; 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; sister, Joan Konkle; 2 brothers, George (Dee) Kumfer of Columbia City and John (Brenda) Rock of Columbus, OH.  He was preceded in death by his birth parents as well as adoptive parents, Agnes and Charles Hyde; brothers, Elmer, Leo, and Alva Kumfer; sisters, Agnes Farrell and Margaret Beckman; and infant son, Jamie Joseph Kumfer.

Mass of Christian Burial took place Thursday, December 31, 2009 at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Nix Settlement, with Fr. Graham Leslie Kleespie, 74

Graham Leslie Kleespie, 74, of Crooked Lake, died Sunday afternoon, December 20, 2009 at his winter home in Bradenton, Florida.

He was born September 17, 1935, at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, a son of Reverend Graham L. and Cornelia (Schlundt) Kleespie. He lived in Whitestown, Indiana, until the age of 10 when his family moved to Columbia City. Graham graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1954 and attended Wittenberg University.

He served 3 years in the US Army with ASA, Intelligence and was stationed in Kyoto, Japan, for 2 years.

He worked in management for Eastern Express Trucking Company and was terminal manager for 5 years in Peoria, Illinois. He retired from TRM Priority in 2005.

In 2005, he married Rosalie Kay (Farber) Shoda and they lived at Crooked Lake in the summer and Bradenton, Florida, in the winter.

Graham attended Oak Grove United Methodist Church and was a member of Columbia City Lodge #189 F. & A. M., Scottish Rite, The Elks, American Legion Post #98 and the Eagles Lodge #1906.

He is survived by his wife, Rosalie Kay; four children, Donald Kleespie of Tippecanoe, Kathryn Bennett of Columbia City, Julie (Dan) Hanauer of Columbia City and Jennifer (Jay) Trier of Fort Wayne; five step-children, Rhonda (Jay) Rau, Ryan (Beverly) Shoda and Rebecca (David) Knight, all of Oregon, LuAnn (John O'Meara) Shoda and Ronelle Shoda of Columbia City; 9 grandchildren; 9 step-grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; a special friend and brother, Keith Kleespie of Columbia City; and best friend, Don Wineland of Columbia City.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan (Peterson) Kleespie, on September 11, 2004.

A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 2, 2010, at Grace Lutheran Church, Columbia City. The family will receive friends after 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

 Memorials may be given to the Oak Grove United Methodist Church, Grace Lutheran Food Pantry or Grace Lutheran Scholarship Fund.

Charles Q. Callahan, 90

Charles Q. Callahan, 90, of Columbia City, died at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, December 27, 2009 at Renaissance Village where he had been a resident since May 2009.

He was born July 29, 1919, in Pawnee County, Oklahoma, a son of Jesse and Florence (Gross) Callahan. In 1929, his family moved to Indiana. He graduated from Portland High School and Indiana Technical College in Fort Wayne.

On May 29, 1941, he was united in marriage to Mary Ruth Spade. They made their home in Portland for a short time before moving to Fort Wayne. In December 1975, they moved to Union Township, Whitley County. Mrs. Callahan died September 23, 1992. In September 2006, Charlie moved into Columbia City.

A United States Navy veteran, he was honorably discharged October 19, 1945.

He retired from I.T.T. in 1981 with 29 years of service.

His memberships included Trinity Presbyterian Church and formerly the Amateur Radio Club.

Surviving relatives include four children, D. Michael (Elizabeth) Callahan of Katy, Texas; Bonnie Platz of Columbia City, Christopher L. (Kathy) Callahan of Atlanta, Georgia; and Beth (Brian) Link of Jacksonville, Florida; seven grandchildren, including Patrick & Megan, Molly, Mark & Greg, and Jessica & Peter; eight great-grandchildren, including Alex & Wesley, Joshua & Caleb, Gavin, Elijah & Sidney and Katy; and two nieces, Ruthie Wallace and Salome Moon.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The committal service will begin at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Gravel Hill Cemetery in Bryant, IN.

Preferred memorials are to Peabody Public Library.

Fordus “Clee” Jagger, 86

Fordus “Clee” Jagger, 86, of Columbia City, passed away at 8:10 p.m. on Thursday, December 26, 2009, at Renaissance Village Nursing Home. 

Born on October 3, 1923 in Smith Township, he was the son of Harry and Ethel (Shively) Jagger. He attended Columbia City High School.               

He was a Whitley County resident all of his life with the exception of his time in the service.  A Navy veteran of World War II, Clee was a Seaman, 1st Class, serving aboard the USS Wisconsin. 

On January 30, 1971, he married Marilyn Kennedy-Egloff at Larwill Methodist Church. 

He worked 31 years at Dana, retiring in 1987.  He was a member of the Blue River Church of the Brethren, Columbia City Eagles Lodge #1906 and the American Legion, Churubusco.

Survivors include his four step-children, Karen (Kurt) Wolfe, Michael Egloff, Kathy (Rick) Maggart and Lynn (Bruce) Coyle all of Columbia City; four sisters, Ruby Sherman, Ellen (Matthew) Henney, Marge Mowrey and Ardith (Ray) Cormany all of Columbia City; a brother, Guy (Shirley) Jagger of Columbia City; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Marilyn Jagger on February 23, 2006, and sister, Joann Prater.

Visitation is on Monday, December 28, 2009, from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, IN.  Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home with Pastor Craig Myers officiating, burial to follow at Blue River Cemetery.  Graveside military honors will be conducted by the Whitley County Korean War Veterans.

Allen R. Snodgrass, 57

Allen R. Snodgrass, 57, of rural Columbia City, died at 9 p.m. Friday, December 25, 2009 at his home after a two year battle with colon cancer.

He was born November 24, 1952, in Laporte, Indiana, a son of John William and Hilda Pauline (Campbell) Snodgrass, Sr. He attended Columbia City Joint High School and completed his education at Huntington College.

On November 20, 1971, he was united in marriage to Sally J. Winkler. They made their first home in Huntington. In 1972, he was drafted into the United States Army. Following his discharge, they made their home in Peabody for a year before returning to Huntington. In 1987, they moved to their home in Washington Township, Whitley County.

He was employed at Bailey’s Marathon, Columbia Home Improvement, Ulrich Saw Mill, Victory Noll and for the past 30 years, Shuttleworth in Huntington. He also co-owned/operated Tassco Crafts & Woodworking in Tunker for more than 10 years.

His memberships included National Rifle Association.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Sally; two children, Tenel (David E.) Hawn and Shane (Nancy) Snodgrass, all of Columbia City; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; three brothers, Ronald Snodgrass of Middlebury, John Snodgrass, Jr., of Clinton and Rick Snodgrass of Columbia City; and two sisters, Sandra Smith and Loretta Snodgrass, both of Columbia City.

His parents preceded him in death.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Nolt Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Della Mae Brunner, 96

Della Mae Brunner, 96, of Columbia City, IN died Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at 1:25 a.m. at Parkview Hospital Fort Wayne. 

Born on November 28, 1913 in Willshire, Ohio, she was the daughter of Nathan and Susie (Lyons) Gause.

A lifetime resident of Whitley County she was raised in Washington Township graduating from Washington Center High School with the Class of 1931. 

On July 8, 1948 she married Clarence Alonzo "Pete" Brunner in Louisville, KY. 

For 13 years she was employed at the former Whitley Products plant in Columbia City until it was destroyed by a tragic fire.  She then worked as a production supervisor for Fibre Form for 19 years until her retirement.  She was a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge #1906 Auxiliary.

She is survived by two sons, James (Nancy) Yant of Columbia City and Ronald (Barbara) Yant of Fort Wayne; daughter, Gloria Shoemaker of South Whitley; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren;  and brother,  Nathan Gause of Washington state.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Alonzo "Pete" Brunner on January 6, 1986; 2 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; sister, Nancy Plummer and brother, Robert Gause and two infant brothers, half-brothers and half-sisters.

Donald Lee Boston, 75

Donald Lee Boston, 75, of Columbia City, died Monday, December 21, 2009 at 1:23 a.m. at Parkview Hospital Fort Wayne. 

Born on April 3, 1934, in Galena, Ohio, he was the son of Clarence and A. Kathryn (Hall) Boston. 

He was a graduate of Central High School, Fort Wayne, with the Class of 1952. He then served in the US Navy from 1952-1956 where he served on the USS Renshaw as a radar man during the Korean War. Upon returning to Indiana, he attended Indiana Technical College graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1959. From 1961 to 1993, he resided in Indianapolis and for the past 16 years, he resided in Columbia City.

 On August 7, 1961, he married Mary L. Castleman in Indianapolis. 

He worked as an Air Traffic Controller at Indianapolis International Airport for 29 years. He also served as a reserve Sheriff Deputy with the Hendricks County Sheriff Department. He was a member of the National Association of Federal Retired Employees.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Mary L. Boston; daughter, Sandra (Dennis) Brickert of Rockville, Indiana; 3 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Janet Wagner of Fredericktown, Ohio, and Cathy (Steve) Dolson of Leo, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Gary Boston.

Audrey G. Kessie, 72

Audrey G. Kessie, 72, of Columbia City, died at 1:21 p.m. Saturday, December 19, 2009 at Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.
She was born August 15, 1937, in Hartford, Connecticut, a daughter Harold and Bertha (Thoms) Arnold. Her formative years were spent in East Hartford, Connecticut. She graduated from East Hartford High School in 1955.
Following her graduation, she moved to Tolland, Connecticut, where she raised her children.
In 1981, she moved to Columbia City where she was employed by LML Corp. for 8 years. In 1989, she went to work for Bank One, Fort Wayne. She was a teller until her retirement in 2002.
On December 21, 1991, she was united in marriage to Bill Junior Kessie. They made their home in Fort Wayne. Mr. Kessie died July 21, 2007.
She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia (Hugh) Fletcher of Columbia City and son, Douglas (Stephanie Dias) Miller of Stafford Springs, Connecticut; two grandchildren, Erica (Jason) Bell of Fort Wayne and Christopher Fletcher, Columbia City; two great-grandchildren; and step-children, Tom (Pam) Kessie, South Whitley; Debbie Nordby, Casa Grande, Arizona; Beth (David) Metzger, North Manchester; Jill (Tim) Hartman, Monroe, Michigan; and seven step-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Donald O Miller, Jr. and two brothers, Raymond and Edward Arnold.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.

Reverend Berneice L. Herr

Reverend Berneice L. Herr, 81, of Columbia City, passed away peacefully at 5:10 p.m., Sunday, December 20, 2009, at her home surrounded by her loving family. 

Born on June 12, 1928, in DeKalb County, she was the daughter of Austin G. and Lula B. (Welsheimer) Sutton.

She came to Whitley County when she was 1 year old. Her parents first lived in Union Township and later moved to Thorncreek Township.  She graduated from Columbia City High School as Valedictorian of the Class of 1946. 

On June 20, 1947, she married John Benjamin Herr, Jr. in Columbia City. She and her husband established their home on Hanna St., Columbia City. 

She attended a Local Pastors' License to Preach School at DePauw in 1982 and finished the Candidacy Program.  She completed a North Central Jurisdictional Course of Study for Local Pastors at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, attending from 1983-1987. She was a part-time Fuller Brush dealer from 1966-1984.  From 1970-1973 she taught at the First Church of God nursery school.  From 1973-1980 she was a bookkeeper and retail salesperson at the Corral, Blue Bell retail factory and outlet store, Columbia City.  In 1981, she received the call to full time ministry and served as the Pastor of Etna United Methodist Church and West Point Trinity United Methodist Church until 1989.  From 1990-1994, she served as Associate Pastor of Columbia City United Methodist Church.

She was a member of the Columbia City United Methodist Church and had been active as a leader in the Girl Scouts, receiving the Hidden Heroines Award from the Indiana Lakeland Girl Scout Council. She was also involved in the PTA, the United Methodist Women, Whitley County Church Women, was a precinct committeewoman and was involved in the Associated Churches. She served as secretary-treasurer of the Whitley County Ministerial Association for four years and was also treasurer of the Whitley County Energy Assistance Fund. 

She was the founder and served as the first executive director of Helpline of Whitley County. She was the recipient of three Heart of Gold Awards from the Whitley County Community Foundation. Additionally, she taught the Living Faith Sunday School class at Columbia City United Methodist Church for many years. 

Survivors include her husband, John Benjamin Herr, Jr. of Columbia City; 2 daughters, Mary Patricia (Don) Chenoweth of Carrier Mills, Illinois; Rebecca L. Vogely of Portland, Oregon; 2 sons, Rev. David B. (Anita) Herr of Syracuse, Indiana; Daniel A. Herr of Fort Wayne; 4 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, several half-brothers and half sisters.

Visitation is 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home in Columbia City.  Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m.  on Thursday, December 24, 2009 with one hour of calling prior at Columbia City United Methodist Church with Pastor Paul Arnold and Pastor Jean Ness officiating. Burial will follow at a later date.

Mildred I. Wilkerson, 98

Mildred I. Wilkerson, 98, of Columbia City,  passed away at 8:20 p.m. Friday, December 18, 2009 at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City.  

Born on September 18, 1911 in Long Swamp , Noble County, she was the daughter of William and Leona (Kitt) Barber. 

At age 6, she and her family moved to Whitley County where she graduated from the Whitley County Schools and earned an Associates Degree from Fort Wayne Business College . She was married to John S. Wilkerson on May 28, 1932. A homemaker, she raised chickens, sold and delivered eggs for many years from her Thorncreek Township farmhome. She is fondly remembered as the "Chicken and Egg Lady" to many locals. Her memberships included Thorncreek Bethel Church of God and Thorncreek Homemaker's Extension Club. She was also an original member of the Jolly 7 Club and along with her husband, was well known and performed on TV with a local square dance club. Mildred was known to raise, care for and loved numerous cats during her lifetime. 

Among survivors include her daughter, Gloria Joan Banker, Columbia City ; 3 grandchildren, Kenda Huntley, Placitas , NM , Roger Huntley, New Castle and Dale Banker, Jr., Fort Wayne ; several great and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John S. Wilkerson, who died in 1972, son-in-law, Dale Eugene Banker, Sr. in 2002 and a granddaughter, Cindy Voirol in 2003. 

Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Funeral service is 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at the funeral home with Pastor Lannie Maloney of Thorncreek Bethel Church of God officiating. Burial will follow at St. Matthew's Cemetery, Columbia City.

Memorial bequests may be given to Whitley County Humane Society or to Thorncreek Bethel Church of God. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Bonnie D. McKibben, 79

Bonnie D. McKibben, 79, of Fort Wayne, died at 4:42 p.m. Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at Parkview Hospital after a brief illness.

 

She was born June 28, 1930 in Larwill, a daughter of Roscoe and Mildred (Heady) Kile. She graduated from Larwill High School.

 

On October 22, 1949 she was united in marriage to Ralph McKibben. They have always made their home in Fort Wayne.

 

She was a self employed beautician for over 60 years.

 

A charter member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, she was also a member of Kappa Chi Delta of Pi Omicron and enjoyed her membership at Parkview Fitness.

 

A wonderful mother, grandmother and friend, she enjoyed her friendships and counted them as her greatest treasures on earth.

 

Surviving relatives included her husband of 60 years, Ralph; three children, Marsha (Jim) Wulpi, Lisa Schwaberow and Mark (Karen) McKibben; nine grandchildren, Ryan (Jennifer) Wulpi, Ben, Alex & Logan Wulpi, Dan, Olivia & Levi Schwaberow and Dustin & Chance McKibben; and a sister, Pat Little, all of Fort Wayne.

 

Her oldest daughter, Linda McKibben, preceded her in death.

 

The funeral services were held Monday, December 21, at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Fort Wayne. The entombment was in Concordia Cemetery.

 

Preferred memorials are to Good Shepherd United Methodist Church.

Howard Lee Mason, Sr., 90

Howard Lee Mason, Sr., 90, of Columbia City passed away at 10:10 a.m. Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at Miller's Merry Manor, Columbia City.

Born on November 9, 1919, in Fort Wayne, he was the son of Ray and Nellie (Morris) Mason.                   

He attended school in Flint, Indiana, and graduated from North Side High School in Fort Wayne.

On June 14, 1941, he married Dorothy Gephart in Fort Wayne.

He served in the United States Army from 1944-1946 during World War II.

He lived most of his life in Fort Wayne until moving to Columbia City in 1978. He moved to Noble Township, Noble County, in November 1991.

In 1980, he retired from Fort Wayne Cover-All Rental Company as a sales representative. Earlier in his life, he had been employed by the Farnsworth Company and Eskay Dairy of Fort Wayne, IN.

He was a member of Columbia City Post #5582 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Columbia City Post #98 American Legion and Columbia City Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge #1906.

Survivors include his 2 sons, Robert Allen (Kerry) Mason of Kendallville and Howard Lee Mason, Jr. of Boulder City, Nevada; a longtime companion, Roberta Graves of Columbia City; 9 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Gephart, and brothers, Harold and Eugene Mason.

An Eagles Twilight Service was held Friday, December 18, 2009, at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home. A funeral service was held Saturday, December 19, 2009, at the funeral home with Pastor Phil Blake officiating. Following the service, military honors were presented by the American Legion Post#98 and VFW Post#5582. Memorials may be given in memory of Mr. Mason to Parkview Whitley Hospice. Hugh D. Fiandt, 90

Hugh D. Fiandt, 90, of Warsaw, died at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday December 15, 2009 at Kosciusko Community Hospital. He had been a resident at Miller’s Merry Manor since April 2008.

He was born June 6, 1919, in Wolcottville, a son of Thurlow and Gladys (Wolf) Fiandt. His formative years were spent in Wolcottville. He graduated from Wolcottville High School and attended Purdue University. He sang in the Purdue Glee Club and continued to be a Purdue Football and Basketball fan.

In 1943, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged in November 1945.

In 1945, he married M. Jacqueline Weber. They made their home in Fort Wayne until 1980 when they moved to Lake Tippecanoe. Mrs. Fiandt died March 19, 1982.

On January 8, 1985, he married Hazel C. (Taulbee) Jetmore. They moved to Florida for two years and returned to Warsaw in 2000.

He was employed at International Harvester, was an insurance agent from 1948 until his retirement and owned Blaising & Fiandt Insurance.

His memberships include Sol D Bayless Lodge #359 F. & A. M., Scottish Rite, Mizpah Shrine of which he sang in the Shrine Chanters for 35 years, American Legion Post #253 in North Webster, V.F.W. Post in Fort Wayne and Central Lions Club in Fort Wayne for 42 years serving as president from 1976-77.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Hazel; four children, David (Beverly) Fiandt of Fort Wayne, Don (Connie) Fiandt of Fort Wayne, Debbie (Jack) Rodenbeck of Fremont and Doug (Heather) Fiandt of Warsaw; two step sons, Donald (Sheila) Jetmore of Columbia City and Timothy Jetmore of Warsaw; 13 grandchildren, Channing, Erin, Beth, Julie, Hap, Justin, Damon, Abby, Stacie, David, Cole, Mitchell and Grant; 12 great-grandchildren, Arrow, Ben, Autumn, Jensen, Molly, Sydni, Jacob, Andy, Kai, Sydney, Maya and Caden; and a sister, Margaret Fuller McBride of Fort Wayne.

The funeral service was held Sunday, December 20, 2009, at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. A private family burial was held at Greenlawn Memorial Park on Monday, December 21.

Preferred memorials are to Shriners Hospitals for Children or Leader Dogs for the Blind.

Virginia J. Duley, 86

Virginia J. Duley, 86, of Larwill, died at 1:05 a.m. Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at The Oaks Living Center where she had been a resident since November 20, 2009.

She was born January 21, 1923, in Hammond, Indiana, a daughter of Gordie Henderson and Martha (Whitman) Cauble. She graduated from Hammond High School and nursing school.

On August 9, 1944, she enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as pharmacist’s mate second class. She was honorably discharged July 18, 1946.

On May 22, 1948, she was united in marriage to Charles R. Duley. They made their home in the Calumet area. Following the death of Mr. Duley on August 23, 1998, she moved to Fort Wayne. Since the Spring of 2004, she has resided in Larwill.

She had been attending New Hope Wesleyan Church.

Surviving relatives include three daughters, Cheryl (Don) Lecea of Hammond, Sandra (Dan) DeWald of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, and Charlotte (Tony) Lytle of Larwill; nine grandchildren, David (Shawna Lecea, Keith Lecea, Paul Lecea, Katie (Brian) Critchfield, Jon DeWald, Erika DeWald, Anthony (Agnes) Lytle II, Ginnie (Jeremy) Galentine and Chase Lytle; and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Junior Cauble and a sister, Phyllis Spinks.

The memorial service was held Friday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home.

Netha A. Walter, 86, of Whitley County, died at 11:50 p.m. Monday, December 14, 2009 at the home of a daughter, Beverly Hatfield.
She was born February 1, 1923, in Whitley County, a daughter of Harley and Olive DeWitt Martz. Her formative years were spent in Whitley County.
On February 9, 1940, she was united in marriage to Arthur William Walter. They resided in Whitley County, later moving to Huntington. Mr. Walter died July 22, 2009.
She was employed at Chamberlin Products in South Whitley for many years and was a rural deliverer for The Post & Mail for over 10 years.
Surviving relatives include nine children, Beverly Hatfield, Carol (Walter) Rowland, Margaret (C. David) Kilgore and James (Elizabeth) Walter, all of Columbia City, Stephen Walter of Texas, Gary Walter of Columbia City, Randall (Kim) Walter of Gas City, Franklin Walter of South Whitley and Tina (Joseph) Kocher of Huntington; 27 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and 15 great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gerald Walter; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
The funeral service was held Saturday, December 19, at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial was in South Whitley Cemetery.

Joseph D. Lumm, 85

Joseph D. Lumm, 85, of Columbia City, died at 12:25 p.m. Sunday, December 13, 2009 at The Oaks Living Center where he had been a resident since March 20, 2009.

He was born August 20, 1924, in Lagrange, a son of Joseph H. and Aimee M. (McOscar) Lumm. His formative years were spent in Lagrange. He graduated from Lagrange High School.
In 1943, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was honorably discharged in 1945. In 1946 he moved to Avilla.
On September 3, 1948, he was united in marriage to Eileen F. Irons. They made their first home in Kendallville.

His employment with United Telephone Company of Indiana Inc. transferred him and his family throughout Northern Indiana before settling in January 1965 in Columbia City. He retired October 1, 1983 with over 39 years of service.
His memberships included Columbia City United Methodist Church, Avilla Lodge #460 Free & Accepted Masons, Scottish Rite, Mizpah Shrine and Whitley County Shrine Club.
Surviving relatives include a son, John M. (Rita) Lumm of Lexington, Ohio; a daughter, Catherine S. (Melvin) Reeg of Columbia City; four grandchildren, Ryan D. (Lori) Lumm, Abby M. Lumm, Melanie K. Reeg and Gavin M. Reeg; and a sister, Ruth Irene Fry of Goshen.
In addition to his wife of nearly 59 years, Eileen, who died August 11, 2007, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Alma Lumm.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, December 16, 2009, at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial was in Nolt Cemetery.
A Masonic Service was held Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at the funeral home.

Eva Mae Geiger, 69,of Fort Wayne passed away at 4:25 a.m. Thursday, December 3, 2009.
Born on November 11, 1940 in Fort Wayne, she was the daughter of Richard Simpson and Evelyn (Robb) Davis. 
She lived the majority of her life in Fort Wayne. A graduate of Wawaka High School with the Class of 1960, she was employed by Magnavox Fort Wayne for 39 years.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, George Geiger of Fort Wayne; 2 daughters, Tammy Geiger and Gail (Brad) Estabrook, both of Fort Wayne; 2 grandsons, Brent Shelton and Brock Estabrook of Fort Wayne; 2 sisters, Deena (Norm) Ebey of Russells Point, Ohio, and Linda Simpson of Waynedale; brother, Terry Simpson of Waynedale, and step-mother Wilma Simpson of Waynedale. 
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Richard Simpson, Jr.

Bradley Dean Taylor, 52

Bradley Dean Taylor, 52, of Fort Wayne, passed away at 2:36 a.m. Monday, November 30, 2009 at Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.
Born in Fort Wayne on July 29, 1957, he was the son of Laurel Eugene and Donnabelle "Johnnie" (Wagner) Taylor.
A lifetime Fort Wayne resident, he graduated with the Class of 1978 from Homestead High School.
For 17 years, he worked for I&M sub stations and as a former meter reader, for 10 years at Fort Wayne Foundry in the machining division and for a few months at National Tube, until his illness didn't allow him to physically work anymore.
He was a member of Three Rivers Wesleyan Church, Fort Wayne.
Survivors include his parents, Laurel and Donnabelle "Johnnie" Taylor of Fort Wayne; daughters, Amber Taylor and Emilee Taylor of Fort Wayne; brothers, Gregory Eugene (Cindy) Taylor of Pierceton and Vance Alan (Rhonda Ferry) Taylor of Orland, Florida; a niece, Angela Taylor; two nephews, Christopher Taylor and Caleb Logan; a granddaughter, and former spouse, Gwen, of Fort Wayne.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 3, at the funeral home with Pastor Greg Smith of the Faith Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne, officiating. Burial followed in Jefferson Chapel (Sand Bank), 7125 S 500 E, Columbia City.

Mary E. Kneller, 92

Mary E. Kneller, 92, of Columbia City, died at 1:45 a.m. Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at Miller’s Merry Manor where she had been a resident since October 2008.
She was born January 13, 1917, in Whitley County, a daughter of George and Bessie (Lovering) Wolfe. Her formative years were spent in Columbia City. She completed her education at Columbia City High School.
On January 1, 1938, she was united in marriage to Floyd H. Kneller. They made their home in Washington Township, Whitley County. Mr. Kneller died August 1, 1995.
She was a cook and server at 9 & 14 for many years and a cook at Miller’s Merry Manor from the mid 1970s until the mid 1980s.
A member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, she was active in the Dorcas Society, L.W.M.L. and a Sunday School teacher for many years. She also enjoyed the community Birthday Club.
Surviving relatives include seven children, Karen (Wade) Cummings of Pineville, Louisiana, Jerri Sparks of Bippus, Nancy Farber of Columbia City, Dennis Kneller of Columbia City, Robert (Claudia) Kneller of Fort Wayne, Amy (James) Woods of South Whitley and Peggy (Ray) Crawford of South Whitley; 20 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; three brother, Robert, Ralph and Royal; and two sisters, Martha Smith and Mabel Bingham.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church,

City with visitation after 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.
The burial will be in Nolt Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.

Raymond Royce Martin, 70

Raymond Royce Martin, 70, of Columbia City, passed away at 1:40 a.m. Saturday, November 28, 2009 at his home. 
Born on October 18, 1939 in Elizabethtown, New York, he was the son of Fred Eric and Olga Julia (Royce) Martin.
He lived in New York , moving to Illinois for 12 years. In 1972, he moved to Fort Wayne and in 1978, he moved to Whitley County.
He attended Greer Technical Institute, Braidwood, Illinois.
On December 2, 1961, he married Lois Irene Parrish, the light of his life, in Joilet, Illinois. 
A general farmer, he worked at Material Paving Corporation, Chicago, Illinois, Peabody Coal Company, St. Louis, Missouri, American Smelting Company, Elmwood, Illinois, from 1971 until 1998 he owned and operated Ray's Truck Wash until his retirement.
He attended Community of Hope Grace Brethren Church. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and traveling with his wife. 
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Lois Irene Martin of Columbia City; his only child and son-in-law, Michelle M. and Ken Slavicek of Columbia City; a beloved grandson, Connor Martin Slavicek and cherished granddaughter, Kennedy Noelle Slavicek of Columbia City; a sister, Wilba Louise Strong of New Russia, New York; several brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, Donald and Susie Parrish of Wilmington, Illinois; John and Sandy Parrish of Coal City, Illinois; Dick and Jinnie Parrish of Wilmington, Illinois; Bonnie and Bill Favero of Braidwood, Illinois; Barbara and Pat Duffy of Braidwood, Illinois;  Bev and Mike Duffy of Wilmington, Illinois; Mike and Jan Parrish of Channahon, Illinois; Peggy and Jim Cole, Linda and Doug Mandat, Lillie and Steve Heitke, Donna and Tom Thompson all of Braidwood, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his daughter, Brittany Elizabeth (Rob) Troup of West Lafayette; 2 sons, John Vincent Casimir Lesniewski and Logan Anthony Lesniewski both of Valparaiso; 4 sisters, Christine (Thomas) Robinson of Bellvue, Nebraska, Catherine Ann Lesniewski of Honolulu, Hawaii, Anna Marie (Brian) Flott of Yelma, Washington, and Jenniffer Jeneen (Gary) Pierce of Valparaiso; 16 nieces and nephews; 1 grand niece; 1 grand nephew; brother-in-law, Robert Joseph Hiss of Columbia City; close friends, Erika (Jeff) Persons.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Margaret Hiss. 
Services were Monday, November 30, 2009 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, Columbia City, IN.
