Ruth F. Long, 86

Ruth F. Long, 86, a former resident of Churubusco and more recently of Ashley, died at 8:32 p. m. on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. 

She had been in declining health and had been hospitalized for the past two weeks.

Mrs. Long was born in Elletsville on April 9, 1922, a daughter of Earnest Nicholas and Mary Jane (Wall) Maners, and graduated from Avon High School in 1940. 

As a young woman she lived in Waterloo for a period, and spent most of her adult life in the Churubusco-area until moving to Ashley five years ago.

She had previously been employed at Dana Corporation in Churubusco, and had also worked as a nurse’s aid at Parkivew Hospital in Fort Wayne.  She was a member of the Ashley Order of the Eastern Star, and had been a past worthy matron.

The surviving relatives include her children Martha Ann (Jim) Fisher of Ashley, Russell (Helima) Long of Auburn, Nancy Jean (John Berry) Tulley of Durango, Colorado, and John W. (Jody) Long of Columbia City; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Saturday, February 28, 2009, at Highland Park Cemetery in Fort Wayne.  Ashley Order of the Eastern Star conducted services Friday at the mortuary.

Kenneth Leroy Stauffer, 63

Kenneth Leroy Stauffer, 63, of Fort Wayne, died Thursday, February 26, 2009, at Lutheran Hospital.

Born Oct. 15, 1945, in Allen County, he retired from GE after 39 years of service in 2005.

He was a member of Broadway Christian Church and GE Quarter Century Club.

Surviving are brothers, DuWayne W. Stauffer of Spencerville, Marvin J. (Linda Sue) Stauffer of Churubusco and Larry A. (Linda K.) Stauffer of New Haven; and nieces and nephews, Teresa Snyder, Doug Stauffer, Cheri Edger, Chester Stauffer, Colleen Doberstein, Curt Stauffer, Kristi Tester, and Jim Stauffer.

Funeral service is 11 a.m. Monday at Hockemeyer & Miller Funeral Home,
6131 St. Joe Road
, with calling one hour prior. Pastor Jason Baeuerle officiating. Calling also from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial in Highland Park Cemetery.

Helen L. Hazen, 83

Helen L. Hazen, 83, of Columbia City , passed away at 6:51 a.m. on Wednesday morning, February 25, 2009 at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City.

Born in Whitley County on April 25, 1925 she was the daughter of Earl E. and Zora S. (Shock) Gipe. 

She graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1943. On May 20, 1945 she was united in marriage to Earl L. Hazen at the Columbia City Presbyterian Church.

She and her husband owned Tri-Lakes Grocery and Hazen’s Confectionary in Columbia City for approximately five years.

A devoted wife and mother, she retired from Farmers Loan & Trust with 35 years of service in the banking industry.

A lifetime Whitley County resident, her memberships included St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church where she served as the Financial Church Secretary for many years and various church committees. She was a member of Tri-Kappa Sorority. 

Survivors include her daughters, Jari (Kent) Davison of Canton, Ohio, and Jody (Howard) Lowen of Columbia City;  and five grandchildren, including: Josh (Abbe) Davison of Columbia City, Wes Davison of Naples, Florida, Nathan Lowen of Indianapolis, Gabe Lowen and Naomi Lowen both of Columbia City; two great-grandchildren, Skylar and Jaxon Davison of Columbia City; sisters, Evelyn M. Tolliver of Fort Wayne, Dortha Mae (Howard) Marsh of Columbia City and Carol (Jim) Bower of Clemmons, North Carolina; a brother, William L. (Sandy) Gipe of Fort Wayne.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, who died on October 28, 1998, an infant son, John David Hazen, and sisters, Bonita Miller and Eileen Fox. 

Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2009 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home in Columbia City. Funeral service is 1 p.m. Sunday, March 1, 2009 at the funeral home with Reverend Michael Dillon of St. Matthew's United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at St. Matthew’s Cemetery, Columbia City. Gladys V. Gipson, 89

Gladys V. Gipson, 89, of Columbia City, died at 1:45 a.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at Miller’s Merry Manor where she had been a resident since June 28, 2008.
She was born August 6, 1919 in Illinois a daughter of Walter and Mary (Marshal) Kettelkamp. She attended school in Illinois.
On November 18, 1936 she was united in marriage to Carl R. Gipson. They made their home in Illinois until 1941 when they moved to Northeast Indiana. In 1943 they moved to the Columbia City area. Mr. Gipson died December 27, 1984. In 1989 Gladys moved into Columbia City.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Rolland (Patricia) Gipson of Churubusco and Carl “Butch” (Jacqueline) Gipson of Rome City; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four grandsons; a brother, Everett Kettelkamp; and three sisters, Doris Kettelkamp, Mildred Puckett and Florence Puckett.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Rev. Gene Rohrer officiating. The burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. The visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Charles G. “Chuck” Richey, 71

Charles G. “Chuck” Richey, 71, of High Lake, died at 9:10 p.m. Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne where he was admitted earlier in the day.
He was born June 16, 1937, in Marion, Indiana, a son of Gerald G. and Viola S. (Musick) Richey. His formative years were spent in Marion and graduated from Marion High School.
On June 24, 1956 he was united in marriage to Mary G. Shipp. They made their first home in Marion. They later resided in Chicago, Bear Lake and Mansfield, Ohio. They made their summer home at High Lake their permanent residence in 1999. Mrs. Richey died September 9, 2005.
He was employed at Atlas Foundry in Marion, Apex in Anderson, Mansfield Brass & Aluminum and Batesville Products Inc.
His memberships included V.F.W. Post #5582 and formerly Eagles Lodge #1906.
Surviving relatives include three children, Charles E. (Kathy) Richey of Aurora, Marla (Thomas) Moore of Gaston and Jodi (Bill) Almack of Albion; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Barbara Ditsler of Jonesboro, Carrie Johnson of Tennessee and Verna Burnett of Swayzee; and a special friend, Jerry Blessing of Dayton, Ohio.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Worden.
The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Pastor Steve Colter officiating. The burial will be in Thorn Cemetery, Ormas. The visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Bobby Ray Casey, 74

Bobby Ray Casey, 74, of Columbia City, died at 7:56 a.m. Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at Miller’s Merry Manor where he had been a resident since October 16, 2006.
He was born July 12, 1934 in Wayne County, North Carolina a son of Raymond Herman and Lorena May (Taylor) Casey. His formative years were spent in Grantham, North Carolina. He graduated from Grantham High School in 1952.
In 1967, he moved to Churubusco. He then moved to Phoenix, Arizona, then Glen Ellen, Illinois, before returning to Grantham, North Carolina. In April 2006, he moved to Columbia City to be near his sister, Sharon Whittaker.
A United States Air Force veteran, he managed drug stores and worked in the mailroom at Kemp Furniture Factory in Goldsboro, North Carolina.
Surviving relatives include two sisters and a brother, Sharon Whittaker of Churubusco, John Casey of Cleveland, North Carolina and Ruby Boyette of Goldsboro, North Carolina.
There will be no visitation or service.
The burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Falling Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery in Grantham, North Carolina.

Betty J. Whaley, 76,

Betty J. Whaley, 76, a resident of rural Albion and wife of Ralph Whaley, died at 9:10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, at the family residence in Noble Township following an extended illness.

Mrs. Whaley was born in Angola on December 12, 1932, a daughter of Cecil and Mildred (Morrison) Kime.  She spent her formative years in Williams County, Ohio, and graduated from Montgomery High School in 1948.

As a young woman she worked as an executive secretary, and was married on July 28, 1951 in Angola to Ralph Whaley.  The couple spent a brief period in Ohio and in LaGrange before moving to their present home in Noble Township in 1956.

A homemaker for most of her adult life, she had also been an Avon representative.  However, the labor of love in her life was operating the Happy Hill Feline Haven–a rescue shelter for cats.

She was a member of the Merriam Christian Chapel, and had served as the church’s missions secretary for many years.

The surviving relatives include her husband Ralph, to whom she was married for over 57 years; her daughters Linda (Roger) Wirt of Duchesne, Utah and Rita Whaley of Quito, Ecuador;  a sister Donna Vreeland of Reading, Mich; and a brother Victor (Kathy) Yoder of Delton, Mich.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother Larry Yoder.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a. m. on Saturday, March 7, 2009, at the Merriam Christian Chapel with Pastor Terry L. Zolman, officiating.

The family will receive friends in the church multi-purpose room immediately following the services.

Karen Anne Hoffman, 62

Karen Anne Hoffman, 62, a resident of rural LaOtto and wife of Danny K. Hoffman, died at 10:50 a. m. on Monday, February 23, 2009, at Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.  She had been in declining health for only a short period and had entered the hospice home two days ago.

Mrs. Hoffman was born on July 5, 1946, in Fort Wayne, a daughter of Robert F. and Marjorie (Anderton) Loechner, and spent her formative years there.  She graduated from Northside High School in 1964, and later earned an associates degree from International Business College.

On September 6, 1969 she was married in Fort Wayne to Danny K. Hoffman.  The couple spent the early years of their marriage in Fort Wayne and moved to Noble County in 1978.

Employed as a merchandiser at Source Inter Link, she was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne where she had served as a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Church Council.  In her leisure time she had enjoyed playing adult volleyball and also playing Euchre.

The surviving relatives include her husband Dan; her children Jeffrey M. (Sarah) Hoffman of LaOtto and Julie (Gregory) Brubaker of Fort Wayne; her mother Marjoie Loechner of Fort Wayne; two brothers Steven (Patricia) Loechner of Roanoke and William (Betsy) Loechner of Fort Wayne; a sister Janet (Adam) Kidston of Naperville, Illinois; and a brother-in-law Randy (Pam) Hoffman of Napanee.

Services were held Thursday, February 26, at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne with Pastor Dale Henderson officiating.

Rhonda Lahrman Corson, 35

Rhonda Lahrman Corson, 35, a resident of Fort Wayne, died unexpectedly on Friday evening, February 20, 2009, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.

Born on April 7, 1973 in Columbia City, she was the daughter of Kenneth D. and Jean (Eiler) Lahrman, and spent her formative years in Eel River Township.  She graduated from Carroll High School in 1992, and earned her medical assistant’s degree from the Indiana Business College.

On October 17, 1996 she was married to Rodney L. Corson in Fort Wayne and was currently employed in the offices of Pediatric Associates, Inc. at Lutheran Hospital. 

In her leisure time she enjoyed camping and fishing with her husband and daughter.

The surviving relatives include her husband Rodney; a daughter Madelyn Claire Corson, age 7; her parents Kenneth and Jean Lahrman of Churubusco; a brother Scott (Kristi) Lahrman of Fort Wayne; her in-laws Thomas and Kathleen Corson of Avilla; her paternal grandparents Dale Lahrman of Pamona Park, Florida, and Beatrice (Harold) Morgan of Columbia City; a former sister-in-law Carmen Lahrman of Fort Wayne; a nephew Thomas John Lahrman; and two nieces Tori Coon and Madison.

She was preceded in death by a brother Thomas J. Lahrman on June 1, 1990; and by her maternal grandfather James Eiler.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 25, 2009, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Rev. Lane Burgland, pastor of Faith Lutheran Church, officiating.

Interment will be in the family plot at Eel River Cemetery, south of Churubusco.

Una Dell Smith, 86

Una Dell Smith, 86, of Columbia City, passed away at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, February 21, 2009 at The Oaks Living Center where she had been a resident since Friday, February 13.
She was born July 29, 1922 in Indiana a daughter of Donald and Lucille (Smyser) Bowman. She graduated from Columbia City High School.
On September 20, 1941 she was united in marriage to Franklin J. Smith. They always made their home in Columbia City. Mr. Smith passed away May 11, 1987.
She was employed a short time at Blue Bell.
St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church was her church of membership.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Jerry L. (Marilyn) Smith of Columbia City and Edward K. Smith of Franklin; a daughter, Brenda (Danny) Murphy of Columbia City; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Pat Bowman of Columbia City.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald Bowman Jr., Billy Bowman and Barkley Keith Bowman.
The funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul of The Cross Catholic Church, 315 S. Line Street, Columbia City with Father Larry Kramer as celebrant. The burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.

Dale J. Gamble, 78

Dale J. Gamble, 78, of Columbia City passed away at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 21, 2009, at his residence after a brief illness.

Born on April 19, 1930, in Whitley County, he was the son of Omer E. and Opal M. (Edgington) Gamble. 

He was a lifetime resident of Whitley County and attended Washington Center High School where he became an excellent athlete.

On December 9, 1950, he married Gladys E. Walker in Columbia City.

He retired from Dana Corporation, Fort Wayne, with 30 years of service.

For many years he coached and umpired for the Columbia City Boys Little League Baseball. Other past memberships included the UAW. His hobbies included woodworking, golfing and Dale was also an avid baseball fan and his favorite team was the St. Louis Cardinals. 

Survivors include his wife, Gladys E. Gamble of Columbia City; four children, Peggy M. (Philip) Mallane of Columbia City; Stanley D. (Victoria) Gamble of Fort Wayne; Patricia A. (Mark) Lefkowicz of Arcadia, Indiana; Gwyn D. Carpenter of Columbia City; a daughter-in-law, Patricia L. Gamble of Bear Lake in Albion; four brothers, Duane O. (Edna) Gamble of Warsaw; Paul E. Gamble, of Columbia City; Gerald E.(Bonita) Gamble, Columbia City and Verlin E. Gamble, Huntington; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Steven L. Gamble, a granddaughter, Julie Ann, a sister, Waneta Hesting and a brother, Doyle Gamble. 

Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, Columbia City.

Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at the funeral home with Sharon Brockhaus and Eddie P. Beagles, Jr. DeMoney-Grimes, Certified Funeral Celebrants, will be officiating. Burial will follow at Nolt Cemetery , rural Columbia City.

Joseph C. Shoaff, 85, of Fort Wayne, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at University Park Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Born Sept. 3, 1923, in Fort Wayne, he was a World War II Navy veteran and member of VFW Post 857.

He had worked for Slater Steel.

He is survived by a daughter, Tammy (Greg) Hartwig of Fort Wayne; sister, Esther Coleman of Churubusco; and a granddaughter, Nicole Rothgeb of Fort Wayne.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Shoaff, in 2000. A private family service has been planned. Entombment in Covington Memorial Gardens. Helen I. Grubb, 78

Helen I. Grubb, 78, of Big Long Lake, LaGrange County, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at her residence.

Born Aug. 8, 1930, in Warsaw, she was the daughter of Ralph E. and Mary E. (Atchison) Brown. She married David A. Grubb on Nov. 7, 1953, in Fort Wayne. She worked in the insurance industry in Fort Wayne following college and retired in 1983 as an administrative manager for Yaste, Zent, & Rye, Inc., Fort Wayne.

During her working years, she was past president and treasurer of the Insurance Women's Association of Fort Wayne.

She and her husband moved to Big Long Lake in 1980 and loved life on the lake. She was director of the Big Long Lake Association for five years.

Survivors include husband, David A. Grubb of Big Long Lake; son, Joseph Grubb of Fort Wayne; daughter, Julie (Dennis) Waybright of Fort Wayne; three grandchildren, Ryan, Stephanie and Sarah Waybright, all of Fort Wayne; three step-grandchildren, Trent, Corey and Amanda Waybright; five step-great-grand children; and sisters, Alice Hughes of Bryan, Ohio and Betty (Burt) Newell of Fort Wayne.

Funeral service is 11 a.m. Friday at Hite Funeral Home, Kendallville. The Rev. Phil Paino officating. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial in Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville.

Suzette Ann Graf Trier, 73, of Washington Township, Whitley County, died at 11 a.m. Monday, February 16, 2009 at her home.
She was born June 13, 1935 in South Whitley, Indiana a daughter of Harold E. and Cleo (Bechtold) Graf. A lifelong resident of Whitley County, she graduated from South Whitley High School.
On March 17, 1956 she was united in marriage to Walter A. Trier. They have always made their home in Washington Township, moving to their present home in 1958.
In addition to assisting with the farming, she worked at United Telephone in South Whitley for six years and First Class Daycare Center for three years.
A member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and its Adult Bell Choir, she was also a Lady Democrat.
Surviving relatives include her husband, Walter; a son, Chris A. (Martha) Trier of South Whitley; a daughter, Sabrina A. Trier Byer of Columbia City; three grandchildren, Carissa (Chris) Trier Jackson of South Whitley, Chelsie Byer and Jacob Trier Byer; two great grandchildren, Emma and Kyle Jackson; a nephew, Martin (Debbie) Hiles of Florida; and four nieces, Jacqueline (Edward) Hiles Bacon of New Bern, NC, Teresa Thomas, Sherrie Harkins and Lisa Graf
She was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Jean Hiles and a brother, Clark Graf.

Paul M. Leitch, 84

Paul M. Leitch, 84, of Albion, died at 9:45 p.m. Friday, February 13, 2009 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Nikki and Terry Marker, in Silver Lake.
He was born May 7, 1924 in Avilla, a son of Merl O. and Fannie (Hossinger) Leitch. His formative years were spent in Churubusco. He graduated from Churubusco High School.
On August 28, 1943 he was inducted in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged with a Purple Heart and Bronze Stars on December 30, 1945.
On February 19, 1944 he was united in marriage to J. Maurine Willits. They made their first home in Churubusco. In 1961 they moved to Albion, moving to their present home in 1986.
While residing in Churubusco, he managed the Churubusco Feed Mill. From 1961 until 1979 he owned and operated the Albion Locker Storage. Following his retirement, he worked for Trailer Express for a few years.
A former Churubusco fireman, he was a member of American Legion Post #246 and Repeater 21 Amateur Radio Club.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Maurine; three children, Nikki M. (Terry) Marker of Silver Lake, Douglas M. (Jinna) Leitch of Albion and Kim (Jeff) Hoover of Ligonier; five grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; a sisters, Phyllis (Robert) Zolman of Churubusco; a sister-in-law, Ilene Leitch of Churubusco; and special friends, Joe and Deb Halsey of Albion. He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Watson and a brother, Everett Leitch.
The memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Rev. Bill Farmer officiating. The burial will be in Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam. The visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Larry Lee Line, 61

Larry Lee Line, 61, of Columbia City passed away suddenly Friday, February 13, 2009, at his residence.

Born on September 27, 1947, in Wolf Lake, he was the son of Kenneth L. and Naomi E. (Mitchell) Line.

A lifetime resident of Whitley County he graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1965. He served in the United States Army from 1967 until 1969 where he served in the Vietnam War.

He worked at Precision Plastics, Fiber Form, and Whitley County Hospital before beginning a 32 year career as a machinist with Dana Weatherhead/C.F. Gomma where he retired from in 2003.

After his retirement he worked part-time at CITGO and Pak-A-Sak in Columbia City.

He was a member of the South Whitley AMVETS and enjoyed golf, was an avid card player and was known for his outdoor culinary skills.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Kathleen Ulshafer, 66

Kathleen Ulshafer, 66, of South Whitley, died at 9:31 a.m. Friday, February 13, 2009.
She was born April 22, 1942 in Warsaw, Indiana a daughter of John and Irene (McCausey) Paseka. Her formative years were spent in Warsaw. She graduated from Warsaw High School in 1960.
On March 11, 1961 she was united in marriage to Jack D. Ulshafer. They made their first home in California. Following Jack’s discharge from the Marines, they moved to New Haven for a short time. In 1972, they moved to South Whitley, residing in the present home since 1975.
A waitress for many years, she retired from Dana PTG with 10 years of service. She enjoyed watching the grandkids in their activities, Bingo, Keno and the boats.
Surviving relatives include her husband, Jack; three children, Cindy (Wes) Herr of North Vernon, Teresa (Rick) Cokl of South Whitley and Jeff (Amanda) Ulshafer of Liberty Mills; 10 grandchildren, Janelle Keirn Rhoades, Laura Keirn English, KayLynn Keirn, Nicole & Samantha Herr, Riley & Garrett Cokl, Gavin, Devin & Grayson Ulshafer; two great grandchildren, James & Timothy Herr; and a sister, Leona Izumi of Stockton, California.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Melissa Kaye “Missy” Ulshafer; five brothers, John, Phil, Pete, Mark & Carl Paseka; and two sisters, Annie Spencer and Pat Purdy.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley with Rev. Paul Burris officiating. The burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Christopher Jude “Chris” Strack, 45

Christopher Jude “Chris” Strack, 45, of Fort Wayne, died Friday, February 6, 2009, at Parkview Hospital after a long illness.  

He was born January 28, 1964, in Fort Wayne. He was an assistant manager at Walgreen's.

He was very proud of his heritage as a descendant of Chief Little Turtle of the Miami Indiana Tribe.

"He was a very loving, kind and honorable man. A loving husband and father. A best friend, whom anyone could ask for. We will miss him and know that he loved us beyond what words could say."

Surviving are his wife, LouAnn Hope Strack; a daughter, Alexandra Hope Strack; a brother, Sonny Strack; special cousin, Sue Arnold; in-laws, Mr.& Mrs. Woolever; and two loving furry friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald E. Strack.

A Celebration of his life reception is from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the family residence.

Vincent J. Masbaum, 84, passed away Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at Canterbury Nursing & Rehabilitation in Fort Wayne.

Born in Fort Wayne, he was an inspector with Zollner Corporation for 37 years, retiring in 1980.

He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and Lions Club. He enjoyed antique cars, gardening, and his china collection.

He is survived by his nieces, Sharon (Al) Sarrazine of Hoffman Estates, Illinois, Rosemarie (Ray) Fearnow and Rita (Carl) Chalk, both of Columbia City; a cousin, Bernadette Plumanns of Fort Wayne; several great-great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph H. and Helen M. Kassens Masbaum; brothers, Joseph and Eugene Masbaum; and a sister, Mary (Herman) Bobay.

June A. Long, 93, of Cleveland Township, died Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at her home.
She was born June 2, 1915 in Whitley County, a daughter of John and Lesta (Tschantz) Goff. Her formative years were spent in Cleveland Township.
On November 22, 1942, she was united in marriage to Beryl W. Long. They made their home on a farm in Columbia Township before moving to their home in Cleveland Township. Mr. Long died June 5, 2000.
She was employed at Blue Bell and Baxters 5 & 10 Dime Store in South Whitley. She also assisted her husband with the farming and raising black Angus cattle. June loved being outdoors, mowing grass and gardening.
Her memberships included South Whitley Church of God, Whitley County Farm Bureau and Indiana Angus Association.
Surviving relatives include a son, Daniel (Barbara) Long of South Whitley; two grandchildren, Tim (Laura) Long of South Whitley and Annette (Kevin) Kinnison of Fort Wayne; five great-grandchildren, Hali Kessie-Long, Nicholas Whitmyer, Kenzie Kinnison, Drew Long and Karlee Kinnison; and a sister, Janice Goff of North Manchester.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Ora Goff, Charles Goff, Lee Goff and Erie Goff; and a sister, Neva Hatton.

Thomas Donald Chrzanowski, 72

Thomas Donald Chrzanowski, 72, of Tri Lakes, Columbia City passed away suddenly at 7:26 a.m. Thursday, February 12, 2009 at his residence.

Born on December 9, 1936 in South Bend, he was the son of Leo Bernard and Irene Gertrude (Radzikowski) Chrzanowski.

He spent the majority of his lifetime in South Bend where he attended Central High School and on June 9, 1956 he married Eleanor Jean Greene in South Bend.

He served with the United States Army from December 14, 1953 until his discharge on December 13, 1956, serving as a PFC.

He was employed as a dispatcher for 30 years with American Electric Power, retiring in 1998. He and his wife moved to Columbia City in 1994.

He was a longtime member of St. Stanislaus Parish, South Bend, and most recently attended St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, Columbia City.

He was a member of Columbia City American Legion Post #98 and the AEP Livewires and AEP Michiana VREA.

Survivors include his wife, Jean of Columbia City; two sons, Thomas (Laura) Chrzanowski, Westfield, Indiana, and Mark (Marianne) Chrzanowski, Anderson; a brother, Eugene (Geraldine) Chrzanowski, Mishawaka; and three grandchildren, Brandy, Emily and Alexander Chrzanowski and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons and a step-sister, Kathleen Stafford.

Visitation is 2-6:00 p.m. Sunday, February 15, 2009 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, Inc., Columbia City. The Prayer Vigil will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home on Sunday. Mary Catherine Riddle, 84

Mary Catherine Riddle, 84, of Noble Township, Noble County, died at 1:06 a.m. Tuesday, February 10, 2009, at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City where she was admitted on Sunday.

She was born August 8, 1924, in Thorncreek Township, a daughter of Elmer Jacob and Daisy Ann (Buffenbarger) Cox. At the age of four, her family moved to Washington Township. She graduated from Washington Center High School in 1942.

On November 21, 1946 she was united in marriage to Stanley James Riddle. They always made their home on the Riddle family farm where they engaged in grain and dairy farming until 1987. Mr. Riddle died October 21, 1993.

In addition to assisting with the operations of the farm, including selling eggs for many years, she worked at Weatherhead for six years and did all occasion cake decorating for many years.

She was a member of St. Matthew's United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Rural Youth of Whitley County, active with the Whitley County Christmas Celebration for over 20 years, former director of Farmer’s Mutual Insurance Co. of Noble County and was involved with mission work in Whitley and Noble Counties including local food pantries.

Surviving relatives include two sons, Fred Alvin (Mariann) Riddle and John Edward (Sharon) Riddle, both of Albion; six grandchildren, Julie, Kevin, Jody, Amy, Sara and Steven; two sisters, Louise Easterday and Pauline Scott, both of Columbia City; and a sister-in-law, Dot E. Cox of Columbia City.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Roy Scott Riddle, and a brother, Eldon E. Cox.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Rev. Michael Dillon officiating. The burial will be in Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Richard F. "Pete" Howard, 77, of Tri Lakes, died at 6:25 p.m. Sunday, February 8, 2009 at his home.
He was born February 20, 1931, in South Whitley, a son of Harold L. and Ruth (Stoner) Howard. His formative years were spent in South Whitley. He graduated from South Whitley High School.
On August 18, 1951, he was united in marriage to Patricia A. Johnson. With the exception of one year in Syracuse, they made their home in South Whitley until 1983 when they moved to Tri Lakes.
In November of 1951, he entered the U.S. Army where he served in the Korean War. He obtained the rank of Sergeant and was discharged in October of 1953.
He retired from Johnson Brothers Signs in 2005 after 48 years, of which he owned and operated the sign company for more than 20 years.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Pat; five children, Jan (Larry) Keller of Witmer Lake, Hal (Jean) Howard of Greenville, South Carolina, James Howard of South Whitley, Steven (Kim) Howard of Greenville, South Carolina, and William (Cathy) Howard of Columbia City; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren ; and a sister, Marilyn Carey.

Wilbur L. “Web” Baughman, 74

Wilbur L. “Web” Baughman, 74, a resident of
Taylor Road
, Churubusco, died Thursday February 5, 2009, following a year-long illness.

Wilbur was born August 20,1934, in Bergoo, West Virginia, a son of the late Grover Cleveland and Nellie (Cover) Baughman.

His formative years were spent in West Virginia and then he moved to the Fort Wayne area and to Churubusco in 1963.

As a young man he enlisted in the US Army and faithfully served our country during the Korean Conflict. His most significant duty assignment was with the 95th. Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion Battery C. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal; and the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany).

He was united in marriage to Nelly M. Bell on his 22nd birthday, August 20 1956. She passed away June 14, 2007.

He had worked for Dexter Axle Company in Albion for 15 years.

His memberships include the American Legion Post # 157 and Life membership in the VFW Post 3648 both located in Churubusco, where he served as Past Commander of both Post’s and was a member of the 40&8 in Columbia City, Indiana.

He is survived by, his daughter Alecia (Don) Fahl of Columbia City, four sons - Michael (Jean) Baughman, Wilbur Baughman, Jr., Dennis Baughman all of Churubusco and Larry (Julie) Baughman of Warsaw; a brother Clayton (Mable) Baughman of Buckhannon, West Virginia, 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, and wife he was preceded in death by,  a daughter Sheri l. Chaffin in 2006, a sister Katherine and brothers David, Hayes, Clinton, and grandson Jason Crance.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday February 11, 2009 at 10 a.m. in the Sheets and Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Pastor Bill Stephens officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Park Cemetery in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The family will receive friends from 3-8 p.m. on Tuesday in the funeral home.

Robert M. Thompson, 60, of Columbia City, died at 7:40 p.m. on Friday, February 6, 2009 at New Haven Care and Rehab Center, New Haven.

He was born in Whitley County  on October 9, 1948, the son of Robert M. and Ellen M. (Coyle) Thompson. He was a lifetime resident of Whitley County until 2003, when he entered the nursing home.

He graduated from Columbia City Joint High School with the Class of 1967. He married Diane K. Rumsyre on July 18, 1970, at Washington United Methodist Church.

He served in the United States Navy and was a former Allen Dairy employee working in maintenance department and last was employed with C&R Plating in Columbia City, as a maintenance supervisor.

Survivors included his two sons, Robert M. (Brenda) Thompson of South Whitley; Chad D. (Tabitha) Thompson of Albion; a daughter, Amber K. (Matthew) Joley of Fort Wayne; 9 grandchildren; 4 brothers and sisters, Judy (Mike) Coleman of Glen Carbon, Illinois; Steve (Cindy) Thompson of Columbia City; Brenda (Kevin) Stanley of Columbia City, and Tom Thompson of Glen Carbon, Illinois.

He is preceded in death by his parents and former wife, Diane K. Thompson.

Mary F. Ross, 95, of Union Township, Whitley County, died at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2009 at her home.

She was born July 27, 1913 in Lagro, Wabash County, Indiana a daughter of Charles A. and Mary E. (Christle) Frushour. Her formative years were spent in Lagro and she graduated from Lagro High School.
On May 5, 1932 she was united in marriage to William Erskine Ross. They made their home in Lagro before moving to Fort Wayne in 1943. In 1949, they moved to their home east of Columbia City. Mr. Ross died November 24, 1989.

Her memberships included First Presbyterian Church and Order of the Eastern Star #65.
Surviving relatives include two sons, James L.(Kathleen) Ross of Clearwater, Minnesota, and Gene L. (Rosalie) Ross of Columbia City; eleven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Frushour.

Betty J. Helfrich, 83

Betty J. Helfrich, 83, formerly of Columbia City, died at 12:05 p.m. Sunday, February 8, 2009 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
She was born March 25, 1925 in Smith Township, Whitley County, a daughter of William Glenn and Ellen C. (Goodman) Shook. Her formative years were spent in Whitley County. She graduated from Larwill High School.
On September 18, 1943, she was united in marriage to William O.V. Helfrich. They made their home in Montgomery, Alabama, for three years, then moved to Whitley County. In 1971, they moved to Waterloo until 1984, to Fort Wayne until October 1988, when they moved into Columbia City. In 2001, they moved to the Peabody Home in North Manchester until 2005 when they returned to Columbia City.

In June 2008 they moved to Auburn to live with their daughter, Lin. Mr. Helfrich died December 5, 2008.
She worked for Whitley Products for a year, and assisted with the operations of V & H Oil Company from 1966 until 1971, and Dairy Queen in Waterloo from nine years.
Her memberships included Columbia City United Methodist Church.
Surviving relatives include a son, Richard L. “Rick” (JoAnn) Helfrich of Auburn; two daughters, Carol Ann (Carlos) Buckles of Columbia City and Linda J. “Lin” Helfrich of Auburn; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren;; and a sister, Joan DeLor of Detroit, Michigan.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah E. Shook and a brother, Robert L. Shook.
The funeral service will be held Friday, 10:30 a.m. at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Rev. Kenneth Walker, pastor of Argos United Methodist Church officiating. Martha Diana Fawcett Mayberry, 99, formerly of Columbia City, died at 3:15 a.m. Sunday, February 8, 2009 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Warsaw where she had been a resident since 2002.
She was born July 12, 1909, in Big Spring Township, Seneca County, Ohio a daughter of Jacob N. and Laura A. (Thomas) McKee. As a young girl her family moved to Indiana, residing in the North Manchester and Huntington areas. She graduated from Central High School and attended Manchester College.
On March 31, 1929, she was united in marriage to Maxwell H. Fawcett. They made their home in North Manchester until 1937 when they moved to Columbia City. In 1941, they moved to Washington Township, Whitley County, until 1947 when they moved to South Whitley. Mr. Fawcett died June 1, 1975.
She was co-owner/operator of Fawcett Furniture from the mid 1940s until 1975.
On February 11, 1977, she was united in marriage to Marion Mayberry. They always made their home in Columbia City. Mr. Mayberry died in 1985.
Her memberships included First Baptist Church in Columbia City.
Surviving relatives include a son, James M. Fawcett of Coldwater, Michigan; a daughter, Diana (Dick) Wright of Warsaw; six grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; four great great granddaughters; a step son, Donald (Jean) Mayberry of Dearborn, Michigan; and two step granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn Jean Purvis; two brothers, Frances McKee and Emory McKee; and six sisters, Cuba Bollinger, Aura Neff, Alpha Gottschall, Mina Snavely, Troas Alleger and Evelyn Neher.

David Eugene “Gene” Dunfee, 88, of Columbia City, died at 5:25 p.m. Friday, February 6, 2009 at his home.
He was born April 9, 1920 in Fort Wayne, Indiana a son of David H. and Estella C. (Barney) Dunfee. At the age of 15, his family moved to Richland Township, Whitley County. He graduated from Larwill High School in 1938.
On May 30, 1942 he was united in marriage to Lucille L. “Lucy” Lundquist. They made their home in Fort Wayne for eight years before moving to a farm west of Larwill on Old Trail Road. Mrs. Dunfee died August 31, 1998. In 2006, he moved to his home west of Columbia City.
In addition to farming, he retired from General Electric with 39 years of service in 1981.
He attended South Whitley United Methodist Church and was a member of Larwill Lions Club.
Surviving relatives include two sons, David (Barbara) Dunfee of Columbia City and Doug (Marsha) Dunfee of Vail, Arizona; two daughters, Janice (Royce) Ruckman of Huntington and Patricia (Richard) Schroeder of Warsaw; nine grandchildren; two step grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a brother, Calvin Dunfee of Columbia City.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Dunfee and Edward Dunfee.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Pastor Al Buehler officiating. The burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Tayah Mae Hollenbaugh

Tayah Mae Hollenbaugh was stillborn at 3:41 a.m. on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at Parkview North Hospital, Fort Wayne.

She was the daughter of Greg Earl and Traci Renee (Miller) Hollenbaugh.

Survivors include her parents, Greg Earl and Traci Renee Hollenbaugh of Columbia City; paternal grandparents, Terry and Roberta Hollenbaugh of South Whitley; maternal grandfather, Mark Miller of Van Wert, Ohio; great-grandparents, Max and Bonnie Hollenbaugh; Jean Myers of Fort Wayne and Robert amd Betty Tracy of Grover Hill, Ohio.

She is preceded in death by maternal grandmother, Janet Mae Miller and maternal great-grandparents, Ron and Carlotta Miller.

A private family funeral service will be Saturday, February 7, 2009 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, Columbia City, with Pastor Steve Johnson of Oak Grove Church of God officiating.

Richard G. Birtwhistle, 75

Richard G. Birtwhistle, 75, of South Whitley, died at 8 p.m. Thursday, February 5, 2009 at Renaissance Village where he had been a resident since April 2008.
He was born June 20, 1933 in Mishawaka, Indiana a son of Glenn W. and Mildred (Elliot) Birtwhistle. In 1945, his family moved to Pierceton. He graduated from Pierceton High School.
During the Korean Conflict he served in the United States Army.
He worked at Whitley Products in Pierceton from 1955 until 1958 when he began his employment at Gripco. He retired in 1993.
On September 28, 1974 he was united in marriage to Phyllis J. Eberly. They always made their home near South Whitley. Mrs. Birtwhistle died February 17, 2007.
Surviving relatives include two step daughters and two step sons, Sharon (Charles) Disbrow of South Whitley, Richard (Ann) King of London, England, Mick (Lisa) King of Warsaw and Karen (Craig) Jordan of South Whitley; seven step grandchildren; 18 step great grandchildren; and a brother, John William Birtwhistle of South Bend.
The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 8, 2009 at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley with Rev. Paul Burris, pastor of South Whitley United Methodist Church, officiating. The burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery. The visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Steven K. Raypole, 44

Steven K. Raypole, 44, a native of Columbia City, died Wednesday, February 4, 2009.
He was born December 11, 1964 in Columbia City, Indiana a son of Dallas G. and Patricia A. (Ramp) Raypole. His formative years were spent in Columbia City. He graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1983 and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in December 1988.
His employment included Cummins Electronics Company in Columbus, Indiana, from 1987 to 1990, Rapid Design Service Inc. in Dayton, Ohio, from 1990 to 1993, and lastly Delphi Corporation in Dayton, Ohio, from 1993 to 2007.

He received the Boss Kettering Award while at Delphi and was inducted into Delphi’s Engineering Hall of Fame. An intelligent man with incredible artistry, he had six United States Patents and five Defensive Publications.
He had been attending The Chapel.
Surviving relatives include three daughters, Christon, Kayla and Olivia Raypole; his parents, Dallas & Pat Raypole of Fort Wayne; a sister, Kathy (David) Orzechowicz of Naperville, Illinois; two brothers, Randy P. Raypole of Cary, North Carolina, and Ron (Connie) Raypole of Columbia City; and his special friend, Becky Lee of Columbia City.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 9, 2009 at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Eberhard Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Carolyn Sue Hall, 66

Carolyn Sue Hall, 66, of Columbia City, died at 10:48 a.m. Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne where she was admitted ten days prior. 
She was born December 2, 1942 in Frankton, Indiana a daughter of Virgil William and Mary Ann (Schrock) McCord. Her formative years were spent in Anderson.
On November 18, 1961 she was united in marriage to William F. Hall. They made their home in Compton, California and later Kalamazoo, Michigan for 20 years. In 1993 they moved to South Whitley until moving to Columbia City seven years ago.
Surviving relatives include her husband, Bill; two sons, Archie (Connie) Hall and David Hall, both of Columbia City; six grandchildren; six brothers, Howard Wagner of Peru, Virgil McCord Jr. of Anderson, Frank McCord of Roseville, Michigan, Charlie McCord of Peru, Jerry McCord and Ernie McCord, both of Wabash; and two sisters, Hazel Carpenter and Peggy Learned, both of Wabash.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter and a son, Billy Hall; two sisters, Anna Lycan and Marilyn McCord; and two brothers, Fred McCord and Les McCord.
There will be no visitation or service.

Mary C. Dafforn, 90

Mary C. Dafforn, 90, a resident of Eel River Township in Allen County and widow of Robert H. Dafforn, died at 3:17 a. m. on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.  She had been in failing health for some time, and had been taken to the hospital from Kingston Care Center in Fort Wayne on Sunday.

Mrs. Dafforn was born in Wells County south of Bluffton on April 28, 1918, a daughter of Rollie and Stella (Faust) Deam.  She spent her formative years in that area and graduated from Bluffton High School in 1936.

On October 12, 1940 she was married in Newport, Kentucky to Robert H. Dafforn.  The couple lived in Churubusco for the first two years of their marriage and them moved to the family farm in Eel River Township.  She had lived at her present home since 1962, and had been employed for several years as a press operator at the former Irene Byron Institutional Power Plant, north of Fort Wayne.

Mr. Dafforn preceded her in death on April 30, 1987.

The surviving relatives include her sons James R. (companion Mary Jo) Dafforn of Auburn, and Donald W. (Karen) Dafforn and Roger A. (Judy) Dafforn, both of Churubusco; a brother Richard (Sue) Deam of Bluffton; three sisters Joan Machling of Kendallville, Martha (Dwight) Siela of Fort Wayne, and Barbara Gurule of Raleigh, North Carolina; six grandchildren, three step-grandchildren; several great and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers Robert Deam and Roger Deam; and by two sisters Mamie Schrieber and Margaret Schrieber.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Saturday at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Rev. Larry Smith, pastor of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the mortuary on Friday from 2 to 8 p. m., or one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in the Eel River Cemetery, Allen County.

Maurice E. “Morry” Grim, 79

Maurice E. “Morry” Grim, 79, a resident of Lake Township in Allen County, died at 10:50 a. m. on Monday, February 2, 2009, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.  He had been in declining health and had entered the hospital on Thursday.

Mr. Grim was born on August 30, 1929 in Lake Township on the same farm where he currently resided.   He was a son of Francis Arnold “Bud” and Mildred Lille (Blessing) Grim, and was a lifelong resident of Allen County.  A veteran of the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict, he was very proud of serving in infantry combat.

He was employed as a production worker at Dana Corporation in Fort Wayne for 26 1/2 years, retiring from there in 1992.

A member of St. John’s Lutheran Church–Lake Township, in his leisure time he enjoyed playing the organ, building model airplanes, riding his Harley  Davidson motorcycle, creating beautiful woodworking, and spending time with his family and friends.

On January 20, 1951 he was married in Lake Township to Lois Edith Holt.  She survives.

The other surviving relatives include his children Sherry (Michael) Bojrab of Maumee, Ohio and Scott S. (Julie) Grim of Fort Wayne; four grandchildren Kiana Bojrab, Micah Bojrab, Steven Grim, and Joshua Grim; and a great-grandchild Blake Martin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Merle Grim.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Friday at St. John’s Lutheran Church–Lake Township, 7914 W. Cook Road, with Pastors Ralph Easterhaus and John Cowan, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Thursday from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p. m., or at the church one hour prior to the service.

Interment with military graveside rites will be in Eel River Cemetery, Allen County.

John W. Flory, 83

John W. Flory, 83, lifelong Noble County farmer, died at 1 a.m. Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at his home.
He was born August 14, 1925 in Albion, Indiana a son of Cassius and Ada (Pippinger) Flory. A lifelong resident of Noble County, he graduated from Wolf Lake High School.
On September 22, 1945 he was united in marriage to Lorene M. Dominy. They always made their home on a farm in Noble Township. Mrs. Flory died in June 26, 1993.
In addition to grain and dairy farming, he began driving school bus for Wolf Lake Schools and 18 years later retired driving bus for Central Noble Schools.
Surviving relatives include a son, Greg (Candace) Flory and a daughter, Patricia (Ralph) Butler, both of Albion; six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Ginger Reichard.
A private family service will be held at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Thorn Cemetery, Ormas.

Rilla J. Horstman, 53

Rilla J. Horstman, 53, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. Born in Fort Wayne, she was a driver with Fort Wayne Newspapers for 15 years.

She loved her family and enjoyed gardening and crafts.

Survivors include her husband, David Horstman of Fort Wayne; son, Aaron (Jamie) Jacquay of Fort Wayne; mother, Vanise Jacquay of Fort Wayne; sister, Janice (Mark) Meinzen of Churubusco; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Leonard Jacquay. Service is 2 p.m. Thursday at D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, Fort Wayne, with calling one hour prior. Pastor Lane Burgland officiating.

Edgar "Bud" J. Strouse, Jr., 81

Edgar "Bud" J. Strouse, Jr., 81, of Columbia City passed away at 8:25 a.m. February 1, 2009 at the Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.

Bud was born on June 17, 1927 in Fort Wayne, the son of Edgar J. and Mary Hunter (Foust) Strouse, Sr. He graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1945 and immediately entered the United States Air Force serving on Johnson Island in the South Pacific. He was recalled during the Korean War and was stationed at Rapid City Air Force Base in South Dakota.

When he returned to Columbia City he joined his father and uncle, Abraham K. Strouse in M. Strouse Sons, a menswear store, started by his grandfather, Moses Strouse in 1887. The store name was changed to Strouses and Bud became the sole proprietor in 1974.

On May 30, 1954 he married Mary Louise Amans at Grace Lutheran Church, Columbia City by Pastor Graham L. Kleespie, and they have two children, a daughter Leigh Ellen (Mark) Caldwell of Irvine, California, and a son Brian Hunter Strouse of Columbia City who survives.

He also is survived by his sister, Joan Shropshire of Indianapolis and two nieces, Anne Shropshire of Chicago and Linda (Dan) Ennis of Indianapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Carolyn Strouse. Bud was a past exalted ruler of the Columbia City Elks Lodge, past president of Old Settler’s Association in 1969, continuing as the organization’s treasurer for 20 years, retiring in 1989, Executive Council of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters and was instrumental in establishing the Columbia City Downtown Business Association. He was an American Cancer Society volunteer serving as treasurer and memorial chairman of the local chapter and handling their Daffodil Days sale for many years.

At age fifty he became an enthusiastic runner, starting with 5K and 10K races and working up to mini-marathons, marathons and triathlons. Shorty after retiring in 1993, he took great delight in their rescued greyhound named Abby. For years he and Abby were a common sight in and around Columbia City on their twice-daily walks. Abby’s ashes will be buried with Bud.

There will be calling at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, Columbia City, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2009. Then at 3:00 p.m. instead of a formal service, his family hopes that his friends and acquaintances will gather for an open conversation, sharing their memories of Bud. For those who wish, a remembrance to the Humane Society of Whitley County or the Peabody Library would be appreciated since both organizations were important to him. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Geary L. Hoeppner, 57

Geary L. Hoeppner, 57, of Columbia City passed away at 1:04 p.m. Sunday, February 1, 2009 at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Born on March 12, 1951 in Fort Wayne, he was the son of Jerry C. and Beverley D. (Lahrman) Hoeppner. 

He graduated with the Class of 1969 from New Haven High School. On August 1, 1971 he married Debbie A. Roth at Sacred Heart Church, Fort Wayne. He worked for several trucking companies in Fort Wayne and as a golf course assistant at Crooked Lake Golf Course, Columbia City.

For the past 17 years, he and his wife lived in the Columbia City area. His memberships included Trinity Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Elks Lodge and Crooked Lake Golf Course, all in Columbia City. 

Survivors include his wife, Debbie A. Hoeppner of Columbia City; sons, Shon (Jody) Hoeppner of Columbia City, Jacy (Andrea) Hoeppner of Warsaw and Lee Hoeppner of Fort Wayne; parents, Jerry and Beverley Hoeppner of Columbia City; brothers, Kerry (Rosie) Hoeppner of Anderson, South Carolina, Terry (Martha) Hoeppner of New Haven and Larry (Chris) Hoeppner of Fort Wayne; grandchildren, Kurstyn, Kohltin, Katelyn and Klayson Hoeppner of Columbia City and Avary Hoeppner of Warsaw.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father in-law, Germaine and Charles Roth. 

Visitation is Wednesday, February 4, 2009 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, Columbia City. Funeral service is Thursday, February 5, 2009 at 11 a.m. with one hour of calling prior to service at Trinity Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 709 Business 30 W, Columbia City.
