Robert W. Lepper, 81

Robert W. Lepper, 81, a resident of rural Kimmell, died at 7:55 p. m. on Friday, December 26, 2008, at his residence following an illness of nearly three years.

Mr. Lepper was born on July 4, 1927 in Fort Wayne, a son of the late Warren B. and Mary K. (Chapman) Lepper.  As a young man he enlisted in the U. S. Navy, and served during World War II at the Great Lakes Navel Station, served aboard the USS Cape Esperance, and was a recipient of the Victory Medal. 

He worked at the Fort Wayne Auto Auction in the body and paint department for 12 years.

On Juy 11, 1962 he was married in New Haven to Vera M. Walker.  She survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven sons: James (Marsha) Lepper of Butler, Charles Lepper of Fort Wayne, Keith (Darla) Lepper of Dahlonega, Georgia, Gary Lepper of Kimmell, Randy Lepper of Churubusco and Carl (Cindy) Lepper of Kimmell; a daughter, Shelly (John) Davies of Fort Wayne; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Florence Rogers; and a brother, James Lepper.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p. m. on Saturday, January 3, 2009, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Chaplain Gordon L. Samra of Visiting Nurse Service and Hospice Home, officiating.   Military rites will be conducted the  U. S. Navy funeral detail.  Interment will be at a later date.

Terry L. Buchanan Sr., 63

Terry L. Buchanan Sr., 63, a resident of Blue Lake near Churubusco, died on Sunday, December 28, 2008 at his residence.  Although he had been in declining health for some time, his death was unexpected.

Mr. Buchanan was born in Indianapolis on November 15, 1945, a son of Herschel L. “Red” and Bernice M. (Troyer) Buchanan.  He moved to Blue Lake as a child with his parents, and graduated from Churubusco High School in 1964.

He had previously been employed at Harris Kayot in Fort Wayne for several years, and had also worked as a drywall finisher.  Prior to his health failing he had worked as the groundskeeper at the Ideal Fish & Game Club in Churubusco.  In his leisure time he enjoyed fishing, spending time with family and friends, and having coffee at the Magic Wand Restaurant.

The surviving relatives include a son Shane (fiancee Pam French) Buchanan of Terre Haute; a daughter Pamela Sommers of Garrett; his fiancee Louise Zimmerman of Churubusco; two brothers Paul A. (Nicolette) Buchanan and Sam J. Buchanan, both of Churubusco; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his devoted dog “Saber.”

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son Terry Lee Buchanan, Jr; a brother Michael James Buchanan; and by a granddaughter Felicia.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. on Saturday, January 3, 2009, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco, when family and friends will celebrate his life.  

The family will receive friends at the mortuary on Friday from 4 to 8 p. m.

Interment will be in the Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam.

Timothy O. McMaster, 35

Timothy O. McMaster, 35, a resident of the Seddlemeyer Apartments in Fort Wayne,  died at 7:13 p. m. on Friday December 26, 2008 at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne as the result of a sudden illness.

Timothy was born June 28, 1973 in Harvey, Illinois, the son of Daniel O. and Carol A. (Thompson) McMaster. He was a graduate of Thornridge High School in Dalton, Illinois, and moved from there to Fort Wayne in April of 1994.

His survivors include his parents Daniel and Carol McMaster of Fort Wayne; his brother Brett A. McMaster of Chicago; and his maternal grandparents Harold and Mary Thompson of South Holland, Illinois.  Also surviving are several aunts and uncles including  Dianne Prater of Union Grove, Wisconsin, and Pastor Edward A. (Faye) Thompson of Fort Wayne.

He was preceded in death by a maternal grandmother, Mary Thompson, and paternal grandparents, Willie and Reba Irene McMaster.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday December 31, 2008 at 10:00 a. m.  in the Good News  Baptist Church,
812 West Anderson Road
in Churubusco, with Pastor Edward A. Thompson officiating.

Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery, south of Churubusco.

Patricia F. Stone (Oberlin), 77

Patricia F. Stone (Oberlin), 77, a resident of Fort Wayne, died at 1:50 a. m. on Friday, December 26, 2008, at St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne.  She had been taken there on Thursday from the Byron Health Center, where she had resided since 2004.

Ms. Stone was born on October 25, 1931 in South Bend, a daughter of Charles Stone and Angela Wegner Stone, and spent her formative years in Fort Wayne.

In her younger days she enjoyed raising her six children.  Being a homemaker was one of her God given talents along with playing the piano.  She loved her grandchildren with passion and was very good about reminding her family to say their prayers.  Most recently, she enjoyed telling staff and residents at Byron Health Center about current and not so current world issues.  “We love you Mom, Grandma and friend.”

The surviving relatives include her children Steve (Dixie) Oberlin of Indianapolis, Sandra (Jim) Clark of Narrowsburg, New York, Susan (Jim) Moran and Sharolyn (Roy) Heffron, both of Fort Wayne, Linda (Lance) Taylor of Wheatland, California, and Richard (Margaret) Oberlin, Jr; her brother Charles (Joyce) Stone, Jr. of Clio, California; her sister Mary Ann Stricat of Los Angeles, California; eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson Joseph D. Oberlin.

Funeral services were held Sunday, December 28, 2008, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Chuck Howie, officiating. A private family burial was held in the Prairie Grove Cemetery, Waynedale.

Thelma Mary Ringler, 85

Thelma Mary Ringler, 85, passed away Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at her home, surrounded by her family.

She was born on Sept. 4, 1923, in Fort Wayne. She was a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church and St. Vincents dePaul Catholic Church.

She graduated from Central Catholic High School.

She was a charter member of Huntertown Homemakers and volunteered at Byron Health Center for over 40 years. She worked at the Willow Ridge Golf Course, Heps Dairy Store and was a well-known Avon representative in the Huntertown area.

She was an organist who played for church services during World War II at Baer Field, for Masses at the Byron Health Center and many, many weddings and funerals.

She enjoyed playing cards, board games and reading. "She never met a stranger. She never let the grass grow under her feet." She liked to travel, dine out, fish and camp in her earlier years. She spent 20 years in Canada with her husband, Ryan, every summer, always making friends and enjoying company.

"She will be sorely missed by her family and friends."

She is survived by her children, Ellen Clair of Huntertown, Suzanne (Gary) Seagers of Orlando, Florida, Margaret (Stephen) Jackson of Monroeville, Fred (Cindy) Ringler of Kendallville, Carolyn (Ron) Gephart of Decatur, Cindy (Steve) Getty of Fort Wayne and Jeanette (Clifford) Crance of Tri-Lakes; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Maxine Poinsatte, Ruth Wyss and Carolyn Lapp, all of Fort Wayne and Mary Schukel of Punta Gorda, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ryan C. Ringler; a sister, Jean Chomey; and brothers, Dale and Eldon Lapp.

Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church,

Kenneth M. Wolfe, 57

Kenneth M. Wolfe, 57, of Columbia City, died at 8:20 p.m. Sunday, December 28, 2008 at the Hospice Home in Fort Wayne. He had been in failing health for the past year.
He was born October 26, 1951 in Columbia City, Indiana a son of Kenneth M. and Marianne (Waters) Wolfe. His formative years were spent in Columbia City. He graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1970.
He worked at Dana Corp. in Fort Wayne a few years and North American Van Lines for a few years before moving to Dallas, Texas where he drove truck and later operated a moving company.
On December 21, 1991 he was united in marriage to Cynthia A. (Watkins) Click. In 2004 they moved to Columbia City.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Cindy; two sons, Ken (Tammy) Wolfe Jr. of Columbia City and Jason Wolfe at home; a step daughter, Kristy (Chester) Hickman of Texas; three grandchildren, Jacob & Hannah Wolfe, and Hailey Hickman; and three brothers, Kerry “Skip” Wolfe, Kelly Wolfe and Kevin Wolfe, all of Columbia City.
The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Eberhard Cemetery. The visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Betty J. Luckenbill, 85

Betty J. Luckenbill, 85, of Columbia City died at 11:20 p.m. Friday, December 26, 2008 at The Waters of Summit City, Fort Wayne where she had been a resident since August 2008.
She was born January 26, 1923 in Columbia City, a daughter of Ezra and Annabelle (Keller) Grant. Her formative years were spent in Columbia City. She graduated from Columbia City High School.
On December 21, 1946 she was united in marriage to Robert S. Luckenbill. With the exception of two years in Hollywood, Florida, they always made their home in Columbia City. Mr. Luckenbill died June 10, 1993.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Cinda S. Trier and Marta J. Harshbarger, both of Fort Wayne; four grandchildren, Tony Trier, Scott Trier, Chad Harshbarger and Tara Harshbarger; and a brother, Ben Grant of Troy Cedar Lake.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Keller, George and Joe Grant; and a sister, Elizabeth Cornelius.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery.

Mary D. Kirkpatrick, 93

Mary D. Kirkpatrick, 93, of Albion, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, 11:45 a.m., at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, after a week-long illness.
Born June 22, 1915, in Bryant, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Carrie (Houser) Michael. She had been a member of the Albion community since 1936, coming from Fort Wayne.
She married Charles Kirkpatrick on Dec. 3, 1954, at Green Center Methodist Church. Mr. Kirkpatrick preceded her in death on Sept. 9, 2008.
She was a retired self-employed restaurant owner, co-owning the Chain O' Lakes Restaurant in Albion.
She was a member of Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Albion and Home Extension Club. She enjoyed reading, bird watching, loved her animals and being with her family. Surviving are children, Sharon (Don) Pequignot of Columbia City, Charleen (Carl) Donley of Fort Wayne, Shirley (Tom) Crist of Rome City, Rich (Shirley) Clouse of Tri Lakes and Michael (Nancy) Clouse of Albion; a daughter-in-law, Linda Carson of Fort Wayne; 14 grandchildren; and 28 great- grandchildren; a brother, Donald (Justine) Michael of Bryant, Indiana; and a sister, Fern Jack of California.
She was also preceded in death by her son, John Carson on Nov. 15, 2008; and brothers, Ronald Michael and Francis Gillispie. Funeral service is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Brazzell Funeral Home, Albion Chapel, with calling from 10 a.m until time of service. Pastor Rob Ferris officiating. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Albion.

Everett Don Estes, 88

Everett Don Estes, 88, of Columbia City passed away at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at Miller's Merry Manor in Columbia City.
Born on July 6, 1920 in Parma, Missouri, he was the son of Clyde and Beulah (Vick) Estes. 
Raised in Missouri, he attended school in Wiscow, Missouri, later moving to Dayton, Ohio. On July 6, 1939 he married Naomi Ruth Sissell in Piggott, Arkansas.
During World War II, he served in the United States Navy as a Radioman Third Class from May 6, 1944 until January 25, 1946.
He was employed by General Electric, Weatherhead, and retired from United Technologies.
He was a member of Lincolnway Church of Christ, Columbia City, Due Guard Lodge #278, F & A.M., Larwill, and was a Senior Life Member of the Scottish Rite Masons, Valley of Fort Wayne. 
Survivors include his son, Jack (Dee) Estes of Rockwall, Texas; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Ruth Estes, a son, Ronald Estes, grandson, Brian Estes, brothers, Ernest and Raymond Estes and sister, Sybel Estes Hiner. 
Visitation is Friday, December 26, 2008 from 9 to 11 a.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, Columbia City. Lucy Stiverson, 93

Lucy Stiverson, 93, a resident of Fort Wayne, died early Wednesday, December 17, 2008, at her residence.
Mrs. Stiverson was born on March 3, 1915 in Fort Wayne, a daughter of John and Jesse (Hayes) Tracy, and was married to Paul M. Stiverson on March 13, 1933.A lifelong resident of Fort Wayne, she retired from the offices of The Lincoln Life Insurance Company after over 30 years.
Mr. Stiverson preceded her in death in 1950.
The surviving relatives include eleven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her children Kenneth P. Stiverson, Bill Stiverson, and Mary Elaine Graham; a brother; and her sisters Helen Waring, Loretta Yates, Melden Tracy and Virginia Elam.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. on Monday, December 22, 2008, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Danny Graham facilitating the service.

Kevin D. Brudi, 35

Kevin D. Brudi, 35, a former resident of Churubusco and more recently of Chandler, Arizona, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2008 from injuries related to a motocross accident.  He had lived in Churubusco until moving to Arizona in 2002.
He was born in Fort Wayne on January 30, 1973, a son of Ken Gaff and the late Karen Jean (Trahin) Brudi.  His father resides in North Carolina.
As a child he moved from Fort Wayne to Churubusco, and graduated from Churubusco High School in 1992.  After moving to Arizona, he became the owner-operator of a tool and die company in Phoenix, and recently purchased a second company in Tucson.
The surviving relatives include his sister Kelly (Tim) Robertson of Oro Valley, Arizona; his nephews Trey and Trevor Robertson; a grandmother Marilyn Trahin of Columbia City; an aunt Ladonna (Joel) Hoehn of Ossian; his uncles Randy (Diane) Gaff of Churubusco, Dan (Brenda) Trahin of Arcola, Rick (Brenda) Trahin of Leo, John (Peggy) Trahin of Larwill, Bob (Cindy) Trahin of Columbia City, Tim Trahin of Fort Wayne, and Rod (Kate) Trahin of Arcola; and many cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 29, 2008, at 7 p. m. at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco.

Marie L. Campbell, 89

Marie L. Campbell, 89, a former resident of Churubusco and widow of Joseph G. Campbell, died at 7:03 a. m. on Monday, December 15, 2008, at Renaissance Village in Fort Wayne.  She had been a resident there for over three years.
Mrs. Campbell was born in Green Township in Noble County on September 9, 1919, a daughter of Milton and Minnie (Martin) Herendeen, and spent her formative years there.
On October 21, 1937 she was married to Joseph G. Campbell.  She lived much of her adult life in Noble County, and lived in Fort Wayne for 12 years before moving to Churubusco in 2003.  She had been employed at Dana Corporation in Churubusco for ten years, retiring from there in 1976.
Mr. Campbell preceded her in death on October 23, 1996.
The surviving relatives include a son Jerry L. (Karen) Campbell of Kimmell; two daughters Jeannette (John) Winebrenner of Fort Wayne and Jane Gray of Churubusco; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and spouse, she was preceded in death by eight brothers and three sisters.
A funeral service was held Thursday, December 18, 2008, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Father Rick Leone, officiating. Interment followed at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Noble County.

Edward E. “Mose” Duff, 90

Edward E. “Mose” Duff, 90, of Columbia City, died at 12:45 a.m. Friday, December 19, 2008 at Parkview Whitley Hospital.

He was born December 29, 1917, in Perry County, Kentucky, a son of Ed and Sue (Francis) Duff. His formative years were spent in Perry County.

He worked for Lincoln Coal Company and later Civilian Conservation Corps.

On November 28, 1942, he was united in marriage to Edna A. Daniel. They resided in the Perry County area until 1963 when they moved to Columbia City.

After he moved to Indiana, he worked for Plastic Composites in Fort Wayne for 20 years. Following his retirement in 1983, he began working at Passages until 2002.

He was a member of Freewill Baptist Church.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Edna; two daughters, Mary Sue (Jerry) Spencer of Indianapolis and Patricia (Jack) Horn of Columbia City; two sons, Joe Duff of Columbia City and Harold (Linda) Duff of Brownsville, Texas; seven grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and a sister, Ella Frances Scott of Owensboro, Kentucky.

He was preceded in death by a son, Edward; three brothers and four sisters.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 21, 2008 at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in South Park Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mildred L. Langohr, 93

Mildred L. Langohr, 93, of Columbia City, died at 3:15 p.m. Thursday, December 18, 2008, at Miller’s Merry Manor where she had been a resident since March 2006.

She was born January 14, 1915, in Whitley County, Indiana a daughter of Charles and Fannie (Hartman) Gradeless. She attended Etna School and graduated from Columbia City High School.

On March 14, 1936 she was united in marriage to Franklin S. Langohr. With the exception of two years in Fort Wayne, they made their home in Columbia City, moving to Barbara Drive in 1961. Mr. Langohr died September 19, 2000.

She was employed at Wayne Pump during World War II for two years, Wayne Knitting Mill after the war for three years and later Blue Bell for six years.

Her memberships include Grace Lutheran Church and Town & Country Home Demonstration Club.

Surviving relatives include a son, Timothy Franklin (Susan) Langohr of Columbia City; two grandsons, Ti (Shirley) Langohr and Chad (Michelle) Langohr, both of Columbia City; three great grandchildren, Trevor Langohr, Jessica (Ryan) Sims and Jami Langohr; and a sister, Evelyn Schwartz of South Whitley.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Fern Robinette, Edith Goings, Orpha Juillerat and Flossie King.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Rev. Dr. C. James Cress, pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, officiating. The burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery. The visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Helen E. Myers Boggs, 98

Helen E. Myers Boggs, 98, of Columbia City, died at 12:40 p.m. Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne where she was admitted on Monday.

She was born November 10, 1910 in Green Township, Noble County a daughter of Frank and Anna (McCoy) Shambaugh. She completed her education at Charter Oak School.

On January 4, 1930 she was united in marriage to Paul Myers. They made their home in the Churubusco area. Mr. Myers died September 23, 1972.

In 1970 she moved to Columbia City. She was employed at Whitley County Memorial Hospital for 11 years.

On October 25, 1975 she was united in marriage to Leo B. Boggs. They made their home on East Van Buren Street, Columbia City. Mr. Boggs died April 25, 2003.

Her memberships included Thorncreek Bethel Church of God.

Surviving relatives include three daughters, Lillian Nayadeen Brown of Fort Wayne, Martha A. (Gene) Bohnstedt of Churubusco and Faith Helfrich of Columbia City; 13 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; and 25 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, three brothers and four sisters.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 20, 2008 at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Jennie Mae Vaught, 86, of Fort Wayne, died Tuesday, December 16, 2008, at her home.
Born Oct. 9, 1922, in Columbia City, she was the daughter of the late Otto and Josie (Young) Knight.
She was employed at Central Supply for 35 years, retiring in 1990.
She is survived by a son, Jeffrey (Brenda) Vaught; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Vaught; brothers, Benjamin, Charles, and Otto Knight; and sisters, Norma Reed, and Beulah Schaefer.

Victor Anthony Foote, 52, of Yakima, Washington, a former Columbia City resident, died on Monday, December 8, 2008.
He is survived by his brother, Mark S. (Darlene) Foote of Columbia City; two sisters, Sarah Foote and Rosie (Gene) Twaits both of Aurora, Illinois; his girlfriend, Brenda Ainslie of Yakima, Washington; and a son, Jason Cody of Columbia City.
He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Rosalie (Checz) Foote and a brother, Kim Joseph Foote.

Sharon K. Kienzler, 68

Sharon K. Kienzler, 68, of Columbia City, passed away at 2:30 p.m. Monday, December 15, 2008, at her home.
Born on August 15, 1940 in Orland, Indiana, she was the daughter of Elisha O. and Gertrude B. (Womack) Gause. She attended Northside High School, Fort Wayne.
On March 1, 1991, she was united in marriage to David L. Kienzler in Fort Wayne.
In 1973, she moved from Allen County to Whitley County and she has resided in Columbia City since 1988.
For 25 years, she was employed by Dana Corporation, Columbia City retiring in 2003.
She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Coesse.
Survivors include her husband, David L. Kienzler of Columbia City; children, Twila (Mikel) Barnes of Fort Wayne, Penny (Jason) Woebbeking and Lisa Languell, both of St. Joe, Mark (Mickey) Kienzler of Maryland and Linda (Jeremy) McCoy of Churubusco; 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; brothers, Eugene (June) Gause of Lynchburg, Tennessee, Homer (Lois) Gause of Fort Wayne and Jimmie (Dotie) Gause of Columbia City; a sister, Beverly Ahlersmeyer of Huntertown; step-sister, Gretchen (Jim) South of Defiance, Ohio; son-in-law, Dan Gray of South Whitley.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Debbie Gray and a granddaughter, Jenny Brumbaugh.
Visitation is Thursday, December 18, 2008, from 4-8 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia
City. Funeral service is Friday, December 19, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Judy Follis of Hope Lutheran Church officiating. Memorials may be given in memory of Mrs. Kienzler to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.

Rebecca J. “Becky” Davis, 61

Rebecca J. “Becky” Davis, 61, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, December 12, 2008. She was an adored wife, mother, sister, and grandma.
She taught at Green Center School and in the Fort Wayne Community School system. She poured her love and legacy into her family.She is survived by John, her loving husband of 36 years, who is the principal at Churubusco Middle School; daughter, Megan (Jon) Uecker; son, Andy (Jackie) Davis; and her granddaughters, Lucy Davis and Maya Uecker.
She is also survived by five sisters and a brother.
Calling will be from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Pathway Community Church, corner of Carroll Road and Shearwater Pass. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the church with the Pastor Ron Williams officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Allen County.

Lillian P. Gordon Foote, 92

Lillian P. Gordon Foote, 92, a former resident of Churubusco, died at 5:50 p. m. on Saturday, December 6, 2008, at the Provena Sacred Heart Home in Avilla.  She had been a resident there since 2001.
Mrs. Foote was born on October 23, 1916 in Chrisman, Illinois, a daughter of Felix David and Rose (Meeks) Amolsky.  As a young girl she moved to Fort Wayne and lived there until moving to Churubusco in 1949.  She moved to LaVerna Terrace in Avilla in 1988 and lived there until entering the nursing home.
She had been previously employed at the former VanOrman Hotel in Fort Wayne, and retired in 1979 as an inspector for Essex Wire in Fort Wayne after six years.
She was a member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Churubusco and its Rosary Sodolity.  She was also a eucharistic minister and a member of the St. Vincent dePaul Society.
Her first marriage took place on November 26, 1936 to George W. Gordon, Sr.  He preceded her in death on July 24, 1967.  On November 25, 1971 she married Willard J. Foote.  He died on November 6, 1992.
Surviving are her children Thomas J. (Sharon) Gordon of Fort Wayne, Michael J. (Virgie) Gordon of Culman, Alabama, Carolyn (Willard) Shively of Columbia City, Nancy (Monte) Gaff of Churubusco, George William Gordon, Jr. of Columbia City, and Robert N. (Mona) Gordon of Churubusco; a step-daughter Jackie Brown of Hudson; a son-in-law John Cazier of Rome City; 33 grandchildren, 83 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and two husbands, she was preceded in death by a daughter Mary Cazier; four step-children Alton Foote, Jr., Phyllis Weaver, Martha Longardner, and David Foote; and by a sister.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a. m. Wednesday at St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Churubusco with Father Danney Pinto, the celebrant.  
The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Tuesday from 2-4 and from 6-8 p. m.  The Rosary will be recited at 8 p. m. Tuesday at the mortuary.
Interment will be in the Ege Catholic Cemetery, Noble County.

Robert F. McDowell, 80

Robert F. McDowell, 80, a resident of rural Avilla, died at 10 p. m. on Thursday, December 11, 2008, at the family residence in Green Township following an extended illness.
Mr. McDowell was born in fort Wayne on March 19, 1928, a son of Rosswell C. and Carrie Inez (Fusselman) McDowell, and spent his early years in Ohio.  As a youth he moved to Noble County near Merriam with his parents, and graduated from Wolf Lake High School in 1946.
On January 9, 1949 he was married in Merriam to Mary Lou Harlan, and had lived at his present farm home in Green Township for the past 50 years.  Engaged in farming in Noble County for much of his adult life, he had also been employed as a machinist at Dana Corporation in Fort Wayne for 30 years, retiring from there in 1992.
He was a member of the Merriam Christian Chapel, Noble County Farm Bureau, had previously served on the board of directors for the Noble County Fair, and served for eight years and was past president of the Indiana State Fair board of directors.
The surviving relatives include his wife Mary Lou; three sons Rick (Sharon) McDowell and Brent (Lib) McDowell, both of Avilla, and Gary (Vikki) McDowell of Albion; two daughters Jill (Terry) Shively of Columbia City and Holly (Wayne) Gibson of Churubusco; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters Pauline Clark and Marceil Scott.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a. m. Tuesday, December 16, 2008, in the Merriam Christian Chapel with Pastor Terry L. Zolman, officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church multi-purpose room on Monday from 2 to 8 p. m., or one hour prior to the service Tuesday morning.
Interment will be in the Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam.

Russell J. Egolf, 79

Russell J. Egolf, 79, widely acquainted Noble County dairy farmer and community leader and a resident of rural Churubusco, died at 1:40 a. m. on Saturday, December 13, 2008, at the family residence in Green Township after a brief illness.
Mr. Egolf was born on September 29, 1929 on the Egolf Family Homestead in Thorncreek Township in Whitley County, a son of Dewey and Eva (Winebrenner) Egolf.  He moved as a child with his parents to Merriam and spent all of his formative years in Noble Township, graduating from Wolf Lake High School in 1947.
On October 1, 1950 he was married in Churubusco to Martha Ann Nestel.  He lived all of his married life on the family farm northwest of Churubusco, and was a dairy farmer all of his working years.  For the past 15 years the couple wintered in Apache Junction, Arizona.
In addition to his agricultural endeavors, his life was marked by community service and memberships in several organizations.  He was a member of the Churubusco United Methodist Church, where he had served in a variety of administrative capacities, including a trustee of the church.  He served for eight years on the board of trustees of the Smith-Green Community School Corporation in Churubusco, was involved in the American Dairy Association, and had also been a member of the Boots ‘n Bonnets Square Dance Club for many years.  He was an avid sports enthusiast, having played baseball and basketball for several years.
He is survived by his wife Martha, to whom he was married for over 58 years; his children Jann (David T.) Johnson, Mel (Susan) Egolf, and Ned (Cathy) Egolf, all of Churubusco, and Brian (Judy) Egolf of Albion; a brother J. D. Egolf of Albion; a sister Faith Richards of Gainsville, Fla; two sisters-in-law Connie Nestel Teghtmeyer of Fort Wayne and Janet Nestel of Orlando, Fla; ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Sylvelda (Harold O.) McCoy.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a. m. Wednesday, December 17, 2008, at the Churubusco United Methodist Church with Rev. Corinne K. Boruff, officiating.
The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Tuesday from 2 to 8 p. m., or at the church one hour prior to the service Wednesday morning.
Interment will be in the Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam.

Scot A. Smith, 41

Scot A. Smith, 41, of Columbia City, died at 2:12 p.m. Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at his home.
He was born August 25, 1967 in Noble County, Indiana a son of Robert and Ruth (Eis) Smith. His formative years were spent in the Roann area. He attended Northfield High School, Wabash County.
On December 8, 2001 he was united in marriage to Sarah Ashcraft. They made their home in South Whitley moving to Columbia City in 2003.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Sarah; two daughters, Seria and Larysa Smith of Columbia City; his mother and step-father, Ruth and Robert Harris of North Manchester; three step-brothers, Tony (Jennifer) Harris, Jay (Teresa) Smith and Rob Smith.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 16 at South Park Annex Cemetery,

Vera L. Ramsey, 86

Vera L. Ramsey, 86, who recently had moved to live with her son in Colorado, passed away at 9:11 p.m. on Monday, December 8, 2008 at her home.
She was born on March 24, 1922, on the family farm in Thorncreek Township, Whitley County, to Frank and Desta (Ummel) Kneller.
A 1940 graduate of Columbia City High School, she married Marion E. Ramsey on August 21, 1942, in South Whitley. Other than living in Tacoma, WA for nine months during World War II and her recent move to Colorado, she lived her entire lifetime in Whitley County.
For 28 years, she was employed as a seamstress and garment inspector for Blue Bell, Columbia City. After retirement, she devoted much of her time to her hobbies of quilting and gardening. During her life, she completed seventy-seven quilts many of which were given to family members.
She was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Columbia City. 
Survivors include her son, Steve (Beth) Ramsey of Estes Park, Colorado; a sister, Hazel Rathbun of Columbia City; 4 grandchildren, Kimberly (Sean) Davis of Vancouver, Washington, Christopher (Shelly) Ramsey of Carmel, Kathleen (Toby) Dogwiler of Dakota, Minnesota, and Jonathan (Robyn) Ramsey of Indian Hills, Colorado; 6 great-grandchildren, Hannah and Lauren Davis, Madison and Seth Ramsey, Nyah Dogwiler and Annikah Ramsey.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion, a son, Roger Ramsey, parents, two infant twin brothers, and a sister, Florence Kneller.
Visitation and a funeral service were held Sunday at the funeral home with the Reverend Judith Follis of Hope Lutheran Church officiating. Burial followed at South Park (Annex) Cemetery in Columbia City.

Charles Ivan Pettigrew, 85

Charles Ivan Pettigrew, 85, passed away at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at Renaissance Village, where he was admitted 4 days earlier.
Born on December 28, 1922, in Union Township, Whitley County, he was the son of Charles and Alta (Kissell) Pettigrew.
He graduated with the Class of 1942 from Coesse High School.
On April 21, 1950 he was united in marriage to Martha Ellen Gordon by Rev. Jesse R. Martin at the Nazarene Parsonage in Churubusco.
He owned and operated the Pettigrew Family Farm his entire lifetime.
He was a member of Centerview Community Church, South Whitley. His hobbies included gardening.
Survivors include two sons, Daniel Lee (Debra) Pettigrew of Columbia City and David A. (Cindy) Pettigrew of South Whitley; 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; a sister, Joy (Robert) Haney of Columbia City.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Terry Lynn Pettigrew in 1989 and Donald Ivan Pettigrew in 1993, brothers, Eldon DeRoy, William, Robert and Alverl Pettigrew.

Lulu Eberhard, 100

Lulu Eberhard, 100, of Columbia City, died at 9:26 a.m. Sunday, December 7, 2008 at The Oaks Living Center where she had been a resident since January 1999.
She was born December 2, 1908 in Auglaize County, Ohio a daughter of Owen and Lillie (Hoffer) Buffenbarger. In 1911 her family moved to Whitley County where she attended the Thorncreek Center School and graduated from Columbia City High School in 1926. Her family moved into Columbia City in 1928.
She began her 16 year employment with Farmer’s Loan & Trust Company in 1927.
On Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1943 she was united in marriage to Clarence F. Eberhard. They operated and resided on the 100 year old Eberhard Family farm just south of Columbia City. They read electric meters for the Whitley County REMC from 1976 until 1988. Mr. Eberhard died August 19, 1992.
She was a member of Eberhard Lutheran Church, where she served as church pianist/organist, member of church council for six years (the first woman to serve on council) and recording secretary until 1996, she also continued the publication of the church newsletter from 1976 until March 1996. A member of Whitley County Farm Bureau, she was the Farm Bureau Woman leader for Columbia Township in 1954 and was editor of the Whitley County Farm News until 1988 (received “Top Paper in District 2” award in 1975). A member of the Ruth Rebekah Lodge, she served in nearly all offices and received her 50 year pin in 1976.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter and five sisters, Daisy Cox, Florence Buffenbarger, Bertha Cox, Helen Beard and Lillie Kyler.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Rev. Alice Smith, pastor of Eberhard Lutheran Church, officiating. The burial will be in Eberhard Cemetery. The visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
A twilight service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home by the Ruth Rebekah Lodge.

Blanche Lucille Kumfer Kurtz, 91

Blanche Lucille Kumfer Kurtz, 91, a resident of Fort Wayne, died on Thursday, December 4, 2008 at 4:20 a. m. at the Kingston Care Center in Fort Wayne.  Although she had been a patient there for over five years, her death was unexpected.
Born on May 14, 1917, in Allen County near Huntertown, she was a daughter of Bert Julius and Edith Ellen (Bice) Grim.  She graduated from Huntertown High School, and was a lifelong resident of Allen County.
Always interested in fashion and in looking her best, she had worked as a clerk in her younger years at the former Hunter Paris Store in Fort Wayne. She later was employed in the office at ITT Laboratories in Fort Wayne. In her leisure time, she enjoyed homemaking,  yard work, fishing, nature, birds and squirrels, and had also enjoyed traveling.
On January 8, 1938, she was married to Arthur Kumfer.  He preceded her in death on November 3, 1965.  Her second marriage took place on September 20, 1983 to Theron L. Kurtz.  He survives in Fort Wayne.
The other surviving relatives include her daughter and son-in-law Marina and Lowell Oesch of Fort Wayne; a sister Pauline McBride of Churubusco; a step-grandson Donald (Deborah) Oesch of Woodridge, Illinois; and two great-grandsons.
In addition to her parents and first husband, she was preceded in death by a sister Grace Surface; and by a grandson and his wife, Mark and Lou Wenda Haverstick.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Monday, December 8, 2008, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Pastor Rick Van Horn, officiating.
The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 2 to 5 p. m. on Sunday, or one hour prior to the service Monday afternoon.
Interment will be in the family plot at Eel River Cemetery, south of Churubusco.

William O.V. Helfrich, 86

William O.V. Helfrich, 86, formerly of Columbia City, died at 6:20 a.m. Friday, December 5, 2008, at Shepherd of the Hill Nursing Home in Kendallville where he had been a resident since October.
He was born February 12, 1922, in Whitley County, a son of Lyman Earl and Anna (Betzner) Helfrich. His formative years were spent in the Larwill area. He graduated from Larwill High School.
On September 22, 1942, he was inducted into the United States Army, serving in the American Theater during World War II. He was honorably discharged January 24, 1946.
On September 18, 1943, he was united in marriage to Betty J. Shook. They made their home in Montgomery, Alabama, for three years before moving to Whitley County. In 1971, they moved to Waterloo and lived there until 1984 when the moved to Fort Wayne. In October 1988, they moved into Columbia City. In 2001, they moved to the Peabody Home in North Manchester until 2005 when they returned to Columbia City. In June 2008, they moved to Auburn to live with their daughter, Lin.
He operated Mobil Oil Company in Columbia City from 1948 until 1966, V & H Oil Company from 1966 until 1971 and Dairy Queen in Waterloo from nine years.
A member of Columbia City United Methodist Church, he was also a member of American Legion Post #98.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Betty; a son, Richard L. “Rick” (JoAnn) Helfrich of Auburn; two daughters, Carol A. (Carlos) Buckles of Columbia City and Linda J. “Lin” Helfrich of Auburn; seven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
A brother, Frederick Gail Helfrich, preceded him in death.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 8, 2008, at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Larwill. The visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Phil Edwin Geiger, 78

Phil Edwin Geiger, 78, passed away at 12:09 p.m. Thursday, December 4, 2008 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
Born on January 7, 1930, in Whitley County, he was the son of Carl Leroy and Grace Mae (Wood) Geiger. He graduated with the Class of 1947 from Columbia City High School. After graduation, he proudly served in the United States Navy.
On June 12, 1953 he married Jo Ann Moyer at the Naval Station in Norfolk, Virginia.
A lifetime Whitley County resident and Columbia City resident since 1955, he owned and operated Geiger's Service Station in Columbia City since January, 1955.
A volunteer fireman with the Columbia City Fire Department for 50 years, he served as Fire Chief from 1967 to 1976 and October, 1985 to August, 1989.
His memberships include American Legion Post #98 for over 50 years and the Sheriff's Merit Board since January 1, 1972.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Jo Ann Geiger of Columbia City; daughters, Sally Ann (Tim) Spillers and Catherine E. "Katie" Geiger both of Columbia City; a sister, Trella Mae Geiger of Phoenix, Arizona; a brother, Bruce (Patti) Geiger of Collins; granddaughters, Megan Sue and Danielle Elizabeth Spillers and Kyley Ann Geiger-Simmons all of Columbia City; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Edwina "Winnie" Sue Geiger, brothers, Bud and Russell Geiger and his mother-in-law, Lois Roberts.
Visitation is Sunday, December 7, 2008, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home in Columbia City. Born on December 1, 1934, in Whitley County, she was the daughter of Glen and Izetta (Coy) Cearbaugh. She graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1952.
In 1960, she married David W. Nicolet in Allen County. A lifetime Whitley County resident, she was a homemaker.
She attended Victory Christian Fellowship, North Manchester.

Betty Lou Serafini, 79

Betty Lou Serafini, 79, died at 3:20 p.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2008, at Ossian Health Care, Ossian, Indiana.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, on March 6, 1929, she was the daughter of John George and Katherina (Johannas) Weigand. She graduated from Pershing High School in Detroit.
On July 22, 1950, she married Arthur Serafini at St. John's Evangelical Protestant Church, Detroit. She lived her entire lifetime in the Michigan area until moving to Indiana in 2001.
An administrative and executive secretary, she worked in the insurance and banking fields.
She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Protestant Church.
Survivors include her son, Gregory A. Serafini, Albion; brother, Robert L. Weigand, Lavonia, Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.
Her parents and husband, Arthur Serafini, preceded her in death.

Francis “Fritz” R. Weber, 87

Francis “Fritz” R. Weber, 87, a resident of Albion, Indiana died suddenly on Saturday November 29, 2008, in the North Ridge Village Nursing Home in Albion.
Fritz was born July 6, 1921, in Jefferson, Ohio a son of the late Melvin Russell and Mytle (Hower) Weber. As a young child he moved with his family to Wolcottville, Indiana, where he graduated from Wolcottville High School with the class of 1940. He later served his country during WWII with the US Navy. After his tour of duty with the Navy; he worked for the International Harvester Company as a welder for 20 years and also was a farmer.
He is survived by his children, John M. Weber of Albion, Anita M. (Tim) Noland of Churubusco and three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Weber, on November 8, 2008, in Haines, Alaska, an infant grandson, John Weber, a brother, Howard Weber, and his sister, Berdean Young.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday December 2, 2008, at 5 p.m. in the Sheets and Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Pastor Timothy Grable officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 3 p.m. until service time. The US Navy Honors Unit will render military honors at the conclusion of the service in the funeral home.

Lloyd Warner Grim, 70

Lloyd Warner Grim, 70, passed away at 9:37 a.m. Saturday, November 29, 2008, at his residence.

 

Born on March 5, 1938, in Fort Wayne, he was the son of William and Mildred (McClure) Grim. Raised in Fort Wayne, he attended Huntertown High School, Huntertown. After high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Army.

 

Since 1961, he has lived at Tri-Lakes in northern Whitley County. On June 24, 1961, he married Janice Sue Bauermeister in Fort Wayne.

 

For many years, he worked as a diesel mechanic for Columbia City Freight Lines. He also worked in the light department for Columbia City Municipal Utilities and until April 27, 2006, he was an escort for trailer deliveries for Whitley Trailer Sales, South Whitley.

 

His memberships included the American Bowling Conference where his all time game high was 299 points, the Columbia City Moose Lodge where he was Past Governor two different times in the past 15 years, he also was involved in the Crooked Lake Golf Course Tuesday and Wednesday Leagues and the Moose Sunday League.

 

Survivors include his wife, Janice Sue Grim of Columbia City; sons, Steven (Sherri) W. Grim and Michael J. Grim both of Columbia City; daughters, Janene A. (Derek) Eggers of Wolcottville and Marla Luckadoo of Fort Wayne; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; a brother, Joseph Grim of Fort Wayne; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, James and Carl Grim. Visitation is 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home,
600 Countryside Drive, Columbia
City. Funeral service immediately following visitation at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Gene Rohrer of Oak Grove United Methodist Church will officiate. Memorials may be given in memory of Mr. Grim to the Whitley County Humane Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Bernice Baker, 103

Bernice Baker, 103, mother of Barbara (Bill) Overdeer of Whitley County, passed away on Nov. 29, 2008, at The Oaks where she had lived for two years.
She was born October 9, 1905. Originally from Wells County, living in Petroleum and Bluffton, she moved to Whitley County when her age and declining health necessitated a closer proximity to her family.    
Survivors include her grandchildren Brent (Cindy) Bockelman, Lori (Brandin) Heuer, Mike (Angie) Overdeer, Mark (Jo) Overdeer, Mike (Dawn) Bockelman and Randy Bockelman, all of Columbia City, and Matthew (Becky) Overdeer of Clearwater, Florida. Additionally, she is survived by four great-granddaughters, 14 step-great-grandchildren, and three step great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial calling is from 3 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Thoma/Rich Chaney and Lemler Funeral Home, 308 W. Washington Street in Bluffton. Services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
