Glen D. Whisler, 64

Glen D. Whisler, 64, of Columbia City, died at 7:43 a.m. Monday, September 29, 2008 in the emergency room at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
He was born October 18, 1943, in Gladwin, Michigan a son of Arthur and Betty (Long) Whisler. His formative years were spent in Beaverton. He graduated from Beaverton High School in 1960 and Manchester College in May 1965. In the fall of 1965 he taught 5th grade history at Lincolnville Elementary School.
After uniting in marriage to Kay Felger on June 5, 1965, he began his schooling at Bethany Seminary. Following his graduation in 1970 he began serving the Yellow Creek Church of the Brethren in the Northern Indiana District. In 1976, he began serving the Poplar Ridge Church of the Brethren until 2005 when he retired from full time ministry with 35 years of service. He then served as a substitute teacher and interim pastor for Roann and North Winona Church of the Brethren.
He is a member of Columbia City Church of the Brethren, served on the district board, was a district moderator and a mentor of TRIM program.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Kay; seven children, Dawn (Steve) Hallett of Delta, Ohio, David Whisler of Columbia City, Sheila (Christopher) Kirk of Marquette, Michigan, Michelle (Shane) Spittler of Columbia, South Carolina, Christina Whisler of Columbus, Ohio, Josh (Brandi) Duncan of Columbia City and Jim (Stacie) Wildermuth of Columbia City; 42 foster children; eight exchange students; seven grandchildren, Ainsley and Benjamin Kirk, Taylor and Carson Duncan, and Clay, Calvin and Joanna Wildermuth; a sister, Esther (Joe) Noffsinger of Adrian, Michigan; and a brother, John (Karen) Whisler of Charleston, Illinois.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sarah Lynn Whisler and a sister, Donna Krall.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Columbia City Church of the Brethren, N. Washington St., with one hour of viewing prior to the service. The visitation will also be from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Eel River Cemetery, Churubusco.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 4, 2008 at Poplar Ridge Church of the Brethren in Defiance, Ohio.

Paul A. Schmidt, 74

Paul A. Schmidt, 74, a resident of rural Churubusco, died at 9:45 p.m. on Friday, September 26, 2008, at his residence following a lengthy battle with cancer.
Mr. Schmidt retired in 1987 after a 30-year career serving his country, first in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict, and later with the Social Security Administration.  He had been regional manager of the Fort Wayne office for 14 years.
Paul was born on January 15, 1934, in Chicago, a son of Arthur and Marie (Dietz) Schmidt, graduated from Evansville Reitz High School in 1951, later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business from Evansville College in 1961.  He was married in San Diego, California on February 11, 1956, to Joy A. Sellers, and moved to Churubusco in the summer of 1973 from Lostant, Illinois.
A member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Churubusco, he had served on the parish council, and was a lector and Eucharistic Minister.  He was extremely active in many charitable causes throughout the community, and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Mrs. Schmidt preceded him in death on September 29, 2001.
The surviving relatives include his children Linda (Mike) Boyd of Westminster, Colorado., Vicki (Chris) Andreas of Columbia City, William Schmidt of Gilbert, Arizona, Nancy (Jim) Ritchie of Fort Wayne, and Jim A. (Patty) Schmidt and John H. (Jeni) Schmidt, both of Churubusco; a sister Dorothy Brooks of Allen, Texas; and two brothers Ed (Phyllis) Schmidt of Evansville and Bob (Jennie) Schmidt of North Port, Florida.  There are 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and spouse, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Norine M. Reinhart and Genevieve F. Minar.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a. m. Wednesday at St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Churubusco with Father Danney Pinto, the celebrant.  
The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Tuesday from 2 to 8 p. m.  The Rosary will be recited at 8 p. m. Tuesday at the mortuary.
Interment with military graveside rites will be in the Ege Catholic Cemetery, Noble County.

Gwendolyn Ann Roberts, 87

Gwendolyn Ann Roberts, 87, passed away at 10:10 p.m. at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, on Saturday, September 27, 2008.
Born on May 24, 1921, in Fort Wayne she was the daughter of Thomas D. and Pamela J. (Marsh) Roberts. 
She graduated from Southside High School, Fort Wayne, with the Class of 1939. She attended IU Extension, Fort Wayne, for two years and then Indiana University at Bloomington for two years graduating in 1945. She completed her education at Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio, graduating in 1953 where she received physical therapy training. Her formative years were spent in Fort Wayne moving to Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1953 and returning to Fort Wayne in June, 2008.
After becoming a registered physical therapist, she went to work for Ann J. Kellogg School for the physically challenged in Battle Creek, where she retired with 28 years of service. She was a former teacher at Washington Jr. High School in Fort Wayne for seven years.
She attended First Presbyterian Church, Fort Wayne, and she was a member of the Battle Creek Retired Teachers Association and a past member of Delta Zeta Sorority. 
Survivors include a sister, Effie Joan Behrens of Fort Wayne; nephews, Otto (Diane) Behrens of Columbia City and William (Beverly) Roberts of Angola; nieces, Effie Joan (Calen) Rayne of Black Mountain, North Carolina, and Joan (David) Cole of Fort Wayne; and numerous great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, William B.M. Roberts and John David Roberts. 
At the request of Ms. Roberts, there will be no visitation.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Lindenwood Cemetery, Fort Wayne, with Dr. Rev. John Stephen Parks officiating. Memorials may be given in memory of Ms. Roberts to First Presbyterian Church, 111 Capital Avenue NE, Battle Creek , MI 49017. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Richard Egolf, 65

Richard Egolf, 65, of Columbia City, died at 1:20 a.m. Sunday, September 28, 2008, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
He was born November 9, 1942, in Whitley County a son of Wilbur E. and Marjorie I. (Hively) Egolf. His formative years were spent in Columbia Township. He graduated from Columbia City Joint High School.
On May 18, 1963, he married Stella M. Carter. They made their first home in Columbia Township, always residing in Whitley County. Five years ago, they moved into Columbia City.
He joined his father in the operations of Egolf TV & Appliance and worked for WA Jones for a few years before establishing Dick’s TV Sales & Service over 40 years ago.
A member of First Church of God, he was a one of the founding fathers of Columbia City Jaycees and a member of Rotary Club and Kiwanis. An honorary fireman for Columbia Township Volunteer Fire Department, he was an active fireman for over 25 years.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Stella; four daughters, Angela D. Whitt, Lisa R. (Mark) Stoddard, Kelli J. (Ronald) Betts and Sara D. Egolf; seven grandchildren, Erin R. Whitt, Susan E. (Joel) Warstler, Tami M. Whitt, James Richard Stoddard, Alexander T. Stoddard, Jillian A. Betts and Samuel C. Thompson; his mother and step father, Marjorie and Kenneth Schneider; a brother, Ronald Egolf; and two step brothers, David Schneider and Daniel Schneider.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Tammy S. Egolf and a brother, Robert D. Egolf.
The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Pastor Randy Samuels officiating. The burial will be in Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
An Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Carol A. Nevil, 72

Carol A. Nevil, 72, passed away at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 24, 2008, at The Oaks, Columbia City.
Born on April 8, 1936, in Whitley County, she was the daughter of Harold W. and Evelyn P. (Hart) Ragan. 
She lived in various places, attending Central High School, Fort Wayne, returning to Whitley County in 1970.
For 23 years, she was employed by Precision Plastics, Columbia City , retiring in 2000. She also worked part-time at Miller's Merry Manor for 14 years. She was a member of the Columbia City Church of the Nazarene. 
Survivors include her two brothers, Robert L. (Rose) Anderson and James (Sharon) Ragan both of Fort Wayne; a nephew, Frank (Karla) Anderson of Fort Wayne; five nieces, Teresa (Troy) Wells, Vicki (Billy) McClure, Rachel Ragan, Kathy Wrogeman, and Tracy (Eric) Demerley all of Fort Wayne. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Clifford Nevil. 
To honor Ms. Nevil's request, there will be no visitation.  Memorial service is at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 27, 2008, at Columbia City Church of the Nazarene, 506 N Main Street, Columbia City, with Pastor Tom Beers officiating.

Arden D. Mantle, 61

Arden D. Mantle, 61, a resident of rural Kendallville, died at 8:12 a. m. on Sunday, September 21, 2008, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Mantle was born on January 25, 1947, in Wolf Lake, a son of Harley E. and Valetta (Morrissey) Mantle.  He spent his formative years in Eel River Township in Allen County, and graduated from Huntertown High School in 1965.
On June 7, 1970, he was married at Bear Lake to Jean L. Peters, and spent all of his adult life in Noble County.  As a young man he was employed at Essex Wire in Kendallville, and later was a semi truck driver for several years.  He retired in 2005 from the maintenance department of the Indiana State Highway Department.
A member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Albion, he enjoyed all sorts of outdoor activities, fishing, and was always known as a “people person.”
The surviving relatives include his wife Jean; his three children Martin (Kendra) Mantle of Kendallville, Aron (Carrie) Mantle of Orland, and Karla Mantle of Kendallville; his father Harley E. Mantle of Kendallville; a sister Ramonda (Hugh) DeLong of Albion; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother Valetta Mantle; and by a sister Vickie Mantle.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p. m. Thursday, September 25, 2008, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Pastors Brett Frymier and Austin Fergusson, officiating.
Interment will be in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Noble County.

Howard & Bernadean Nickey

Bernadean “Bonnie” Nickey, died on November 9, 1990, in Ames, Iowa. 
She was born in Fort Wayne on April 17, 1909, a daughter of Benjamin and Ruth (Melott) Bennett, and had been a school teacher for ten years.  Her father had been a widely-acquainted Fort Wayne businessman and six-term city councilman.  At her death, she was 81.
Howard E. Nickey, died on October 3, 1993, in Ames, Iowa.  He was born in Churubusco on November 24, 1907, a son of Alfred J. and Mildred (Allen) Nickey.  The Nickey family were a pioneer farm family in Whitley County.  At his death, he was 85.
The couple were married in Fort Wayne on August 31, 1940.  They moved to Ames in 1955 when Mr. Nickey opened a Mutual Benefit Insurance office there.  He retired in 1972 as vice president of the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company, and manager of the Farm Loan office in Ames.
Mrs. Nickey was a member of Collegiate United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Women in Ames; Alpha Omocron Pi, a social sorority at Indiana University; Ames Women’s Club; and Mary Greenley Hospital Auxiliary in Ames.  She was also a founding member of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority at Iowa State University.
Mr. Nickey was a summa cum laude graduate of Purdue University in agricultural economics.  He was a member and past trustee of the Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames, and was a member of Arcadia Lodge 249 F&AM, Ames Kiwanis Club, and the Ames Elks Lodge.  In addition, he was past president of the Ames Golf and Country Club, and president of the Mortgage Bankers Association of the United States.
The couple are survived by two sons Don Nickey of Kingman, Arizona, and Mike Nickey of Auburn, California; two daughters Karen Gross of Urbandale, Iowa and Linda Hildreth of San Diego, California; and 13 grandchildren.
Mrs. Nickey was preceded in death by a sister Dorothy Ward.  Mr. Nickey was preceded by a sister Isabell Huber and a brother Robert Nickey.
Joint graveside services for Mr. and Mrs. Nickey will be held at 3 p. m. on Friday, September 26, 2008, at the Eel River Cemetery, south of Churubusco.  Rev. Corrine K. Boruff, pastor of Churubusco United Methodist Church, will officiate.  Interment of the  remains will follow in the family plot.

Juanita Faye Riffe, 61

Juanita Faye Riffe, 61, passed away at 12:29 p.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2008, at her residence.
Born on March 16, 1947 in Stanton, Powell County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Glen Roy and Ema Lee (Tharpe) Riffe, Sr. 
A Stanton, Kentucky, native, she attended Powell County High School and she completed an Activities Directors Course through Ivy Tech, Fort Wayne.
In November, 1984, she moved to Columbia City. She worked for 11 years as a medication aide for a nursing home in Kentucky and she cared for the elderly in their homes in Columbia City. She was a member of Oak Grove Church of God, Columbia City.   
Survivors include her son, Steven Jackson (Jennifer) Riffe of Piqua, Ohio; grandchildren, Joshua K. Aker and Sloane Emilee Riffe both of Piqua, Ohio; sisters, Mary Angeline Napier of Clay City, Powell County, Kentucky, and Virginia Stewart of Elliot Lake, Canada; nephews, David and Art Napier of Kentucky; nieces, Serena McKinney of Kentucky and Samantha Riffe of Columbia City; great-nephew, Dominic Thompson; great-niece, Skyler Thompson of Columbia City; and close friends, Pat, Homer, and Garrison Knight of Columbia City.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Ronald, Larry and Jackie Riffe, and a brother-in-law, Elmer Napier. 
Visitation is 1 to 3 p.m. with the funeral service immediately following at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 21, 2008 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive , Columbia City, IN. Pastor Steve Johnson of Oak Grove Church of God will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in a family plot in Kentucky . Ruby M. Dial, 88

Ruby M. Dial, 88, of Woodburn and formerly of South Whitley, died at 6:25 p.m. Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, where she was admitted on September 12.
She was born July 23, 1920 in Montpelier, Indiana a daughter of Loyd E. and Virga (Zeigler) Anderson. As a young girl, her family moved to Ohio for a short time then to Allen County and later to Washington Township, Whitley County when she was a teenager. She graduated from Washington Center High School.
On February 22, 1942 she was united in marriage to Robert S. Dial. They made their home in Laud for four years before moving to a farm in Washington Township. They later moved to a farm in Cleveland Township until 1991 when they moved into South Whitley. In December 2005 they moved to Woodburn. Mr. Dial died January 12, 2006.
A bookkeeper, she was employed at the Mayer Branch of Farmer’s Loan & Trust for 20 years.
She was a member of Washington Center United Methodist Church until 1970 when she transferred her membership to South Whitley United Methodist Church.
Surviving relatives include a son, Robert H. (Donna) Dial of Woodburn; five grandchildren, Troy, Jason, Jarod and Drew Dial and Davah Engle; two great grandchildren, Domnic & Rashel Dial; two brothers, Emmett Anderson of Winona Lake and Dan Anderson of Defiance, Ohio; and three sisters, Mary Fletcher of Warsaw, Clara Mitchell and Anna Keirn, both of Columbia City.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Richard and Ronald; and seven brothers, James, Carl, John, Mark, Roy, Donald and Russell Norman Anderson.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at South Whitley United Methodist Church, 6685 W State Road 14 with Rev. Paul Burris, church pastor, officiating. The burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley and one hour before the service at the church on Friday.

Ruth Elizabeth Ramsey, 91

Ruth Elizabeth Ramsey, 91, of Columbia City, died at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at The Oaks Living Center.
She was born at her home on the Saunder Farms near Columbia City, a daughter of George LeRoy and Clara (Bennett) Leininger on January 26, 1917. She attended Coesse School with 12 years of perfect attendance. After her 1934 graduation, she was employed as a felling operator at Blue Bell.
Ruth and Harland R. Ramsey met during the summer of 1932. They were married on Harland’s 21st birthday, April 19, 1937, at the Grace Lutheran Parsonage. They thought they were keeping their marriage a secret, but word got out and there was a “belling” for the newlyweds at Ruth’s mother’s home in Coesse.
Ruth did sewing alterations in her home and worked in the Tot & Teen Department at Blumenthals until they closed. She then worked at Roma’s Smart Shop and retired in 1987 from Betty’s Smart Shop.
After Harland’s death on April 23, 1972, Ruth took driver’s training which allowed her to drive to Louisiana to visit her brother, James Leininger, and his family. She enjoyed traveling tour groups to Washington D.C., Hawaii, Canada, Europe and throughout the United States. One of the highlights of her many trips to Albuquerque, New Mexico to see her daughter and her family, Beth, Don, Trudy, Cathy and Peggy, was the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta.
A member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, her memories of teaching Sunday School for 42 years (of which she was Superintendant for 29 years) was a source of strength for her as she battled dementia. She loved to sing “Jesus Loves Me.” Thanks to the support of the Grace Lutheran Parish Health Nurse, she was able to stay in her home until January 2003 when she became a resident at The Oaks.
Surviving relatives include her daughter, Beth (Don) Cretsinger of Albuquerque, New Mexico; granddaughters, Trudy (David) of Topeka, Kansas, and their children, Benjamin and Catalina; Cathy (Tom) of Redwood City, California and Peggy Diane (Lew) of Albuquerque, New Mexico and their twin sons, Ian and Gavin; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Phil LeRoy Leininger and James Leslie Leininger.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Rev. Dr. C. James Cress, pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, officiating. The burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery. The visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Velma L. Pequignot Murbach, 97

Velma L. Pequignot Murbach, 97, of Columbia City, died at 1:50 p.m. Sunday, September 14, 2008 at Renaissance Village where she had been a resident since February 2006.
She was born August 14, 1911, in Jefferson Township, Whitley County a daughter of Logan and Orpha (Sheets) Freck. A lifelong resident of Whitley County, her formative years were spent in Jefferson Township. She graduated from Jefferson Center High School.
On December 3, 1932 she was united in marriage to Theodore Edward Pequignot. They made their home in Dunfee a few years before moving to Columbia City. Mr. Pequignot died February 15, 1979.
She was employed several years at Alcoils.
In 1988, she was united in marriage to Harmon Paul Murbach. They always made their home in Columbia City. Mr. Murbach died May 19, 2005.
She was a member of Columbia City United Methodist Church.
Surviving relatives include three sons, Lynn (Lourine) Pequignot of Fort Wayne, Larry Pequignot of Illinois and Lowell (Tina) Pequignot of Glendale, Arizona; two step-daughters, Joy (David) Heinbaugh and Linda (Jack) Sevier, both of Columbia City; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a brother, Garland Freck and a sister, Alice Miller.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Rev. Jean Ness, associate pastor of Columbia City United Methodist Church, officiating. The burial will be in Jefferson Chapel Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Charles H. Kirkpatrick, 93

Charles H. Kirkpatrick, 93, lifetime Albion resident and business owner passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at his residence in Albion.

Charlie was born on March 2, 1915 in Jefferson Township, Noble County, to Earl and Florence Rodin Kirkpatrick.

On December 3, 1954, he married Mary Michaels and she survives.

Charlie was the retired owner of the Chain O Lakes Resturant. Charlie also loved bowling, woodworking and his flower beds. Loved the 12 years he worked for the Albion Park Department. Also took care of the Albion car wash for 13 years.

Charlie was a Albion High School graduate and a member of the Albion Lions Club and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Among his survivors include his wife, Mary, and children; John and Linda Carson of Fort Wayne, Sharon and John Pequignot of Columbia City, Charleen and Carl Donley of Fort Wayne, Shirley and Tom Crist of Rome City, Rich and Shirley Clouse of Tri Lakes and Michael and Nancy Clouse of Albion. Additionally, he is survived by 14 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Bob and Joesue Kirkpatrick, both of Albion, and a sister, Barbara Kirkpatrick.

He was preceeded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mary Herendeen and Edna Bixby.

Funeral Services will be on Friday, September 12, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the Brazzell Funeral Home, Albion Chapel. Pastor Larry Rice Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Albion. Visitation will be on Thursday, September 11, 2008 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Brazzell Funeral Home, Albion Chapel.

Jerry W. Ellison, 56, of Albion, died Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne from injuries sustained from a vehicle accident.
He was born September 26, 1951, in Hartford City, Indiana, a son of Bernard F. and Garnet L. (Gray) Ellison. As a young boy, his family moved to Warren. He completed his education at Warren High School. A welder, he was employed several years at Dexter Axle.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Chad F. Ellison of Albion and Brian W. (Amy) Ellison of Columbia City; three grandchildren, Samantha, Autumn and Nathaniel; a brother, Randall F. Ellison of Albion; and a sister, Deborah Young of Smalley Lake.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathy J. Macy and Margaret Young.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 12, 2008 at Thorn Cemetery, Ormas with Pastor Jeff Hipley, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church, officiating.

Margaret Hiss, 48

Margaret Hiss, age 48, of Columbia City, passed away at her home on Wednesday afternoon, September 10, 2008.

Born on August 29, 1960, in Hammond, she was the daughter of Casimir and Lucille (Kosiba) Lesniewski.

She graduated with the Class of 1979 from George Rogers Clark High School, Whiting, Indiana. She completed her education with an Associate Degree in Business Administration from Indiana Institute of Technology.

On June 25, 1983, she married Robert Joseph Hiss, Jr. at St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, Columbia City. For the past 27 years, she resided in Union Township where she was a homemaker, a mother and assisted her husband on the Hiss family farms in Union Township. Since 1998, she was employed by Autoliv, Columbia City, until her health failed.

She was a member of St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church where she was a Eucharistic Minister and taught CCD and VBS. She was also a Girl Scout leader for 13 years and PTO President for Coesse School for 7 years.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Joseph Hiss, Jr. of Columbia City; three daughters, Ashley M. (Charles) Gross, Amber M. Hiss and Anna M. Hiss all of Columbia City; a brother, John Lesniewski of Columbia City; three sisters, Christine (Thomas) Robinson of Bellvue, Nevada, Catherine Hetzel of Hawaii and Anna (Brian) Flott of Yelm, Washington; four sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; many nieces & nephews and a large extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a niece, Julie Groupy.

Visitation is 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. prayer vigil on Friday, September 12, 2008 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, Columbia City. Funeral service is 12 p.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2008, at St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church in Columbia City. Father Larry Kramer will officiate. Burial will be at a later date at St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Cemetery, Columbia City.

Ralph E. Hauth, 87

Ralph E. Hauth, age 87, of Columbia City, passed away at 10:04 a.m. Monday, September 8, 2008, at his home.

Born on August 26, 1921, in Kosciusko County, he was the son of Roy E. and Thelma May (Dunn) Hauth.

A Warsaw native, he graduated with the Class of 1939 from Warsaw High School. After graduation, he served in the United States Army from 1942 - 1946. He then moved to Columbia City and he lived in the same home since his return from the Army. On April 9, 1944, he married Maxine V. Noyer at Dunfee Christian Church.

For 30 years, Mr. Hauth worked in the axle plant for Dana Corporation, Fort Wayne, and retired in 1978.

He attended Dunfee Missionary Church.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Maxine V. Hauth of Columbia City; children, Peggy (Richard) Ruge of Lincoln, Nebraska, Rex Hauth of Columbia City, Jean (Woody) Trostel of Portland, Oregon and Philip (Lisa) Hauth of Fort Wayne; 12 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; 3 brothers, Earnest (Merl) Hauth of Warsaw, Roy (JoEllen) Hauth, Jr. of Winona Lake and Austin (Patty) Hauth of Florida; a sister, Ruth Ann Neff of Indianapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, George and William Hauth and sister, Margaret Ann Taylor.

Visitation is Thursday, September 11, 2008, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, Columbia City. Funeral service is Friday, September 12, 2008 at 10 a.m. with 1 hour of calling prior to service at the funeral home with Reverend Dennis Rowe of Dunfee Missionary Church officiating. Graveside military honors will be presented by the Whitley County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard with burial to follow at Lindenwood Cemetery, Fort Wayne.

Alice M. (Snyder) Scheiber, 96, of Columbia City passed away Sunday, September 7, 2008, at Miller's Merry Manor in Columbia City.
She was born in Fort Wayne on June 5, 1912. Her formative years were spent in Fort Wayne as a member of St. Andrew's parish.

On August 6, 1928, she was married to Herman R. Scheiber. They spent their life together in Fort Wayne until Herman died January 24, 1990. She was employed with the Magnavox Company, retiring in 1973 after 37 years of service. She was a member of St. Henry's Catholic Church for 42 years.
Survivors include son Dr. Donald J. Scheiber of Columbia City; eight grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband Herman, daughter Sr. Patricia M. Ann OSF on January 12, 2008; three brothers and four sisters.

Audrey E. Thompson, 92

Audrey E. Thompson, 92, formerly of Huntington, died at 3:18 p.m. Thursday, September 4, 2008, at Parkview Whitley Hospital.   

Mrs. Thompson was born September 19, 1915, in Huntington to Edward and Mary Young Teusch.  Her parents preceded her in death.

Mrs. Thompson graduated from Huntington High School in 1933. She was a former employee of Our Sunday Visitor, D. Marx and Sons Clothing Store and she worked as a clerk in the Huntington Township Assessor’s office.

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and a former member of the Jaycee Wives.

Survivors include a son, James E. (Pamela M.) Thompson, Columbia City, a grandson, Andrew J. Thompson, and a granddaughter, Anne M. Rentschler. She is also survived by a great-granddaughter, Baily M. Rentschler, also of Columbia City.

She was preceded her in death by a brother, Wilbur Teusch, and three sisters, Isabell Morris, Helen Gearhart and Virginia Worthen.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, September 8, 2008, at the McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson Street, Huntington. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church,

Garnet L. Burnworth, 77

Garnet L. Burnworth, 77, formerly of Columbia City, died at 5:25 a.m. Thursday, September 4, 2008, at Regency Place, Fort Wayne, where she had been a resident since 1997.
She was born December 23, 1930, in Laud, a daughter of Roscoe and Ethel (Sheets) Hearn. Her formative years were spent in Laud. She completed her education at Jefferson Center High School.
She later moved to Columbia City, then New Haven and later Fort Wayne.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Steven W. (Susan) Burnworth of Fort Wayne and Cary (Marilyn) Burnworth of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; six grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Avis Ostrem of Vancouver, Washington; and three brothers, Paul Hearn of Fort Wayne; Vern Hearn of Portland, Oregon and Allen Hearn of Lexington, Massachusetts.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy Fritz.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, September 8, 2008 at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Fort Wayne.

Billy Eugene Langohr, 85

Billy Eugene Langohr, age 85, of Pierceton, passed away at 2:05 a.m. Friday, September 5, 2008, at Parkview Whitley Hospital.

Born on November 19, 1922, in Bourbon, Indiana, he was the son of G. Walter and Inez (Brown) Langohr. 

A graduate of Columbia City High School, he also graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Aeronautical Engineering.

He was honorably discharged from the United States Army.

On June 3, 1944, he married Willodean "Kit" Menzie in Columbia City. In 1956, he and his wife moved from Columbia City to Pierceton.

A co-owner of Pierceton Lumber Company and Columbia City Builders Supply, he retired from Lake City Bank. He attended Morris Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a member of American Legion Post #258 in Pierceton, 339th Fighter Group 8th Air Force, past president of the Indiana State Angus Association and he was a graduate of the Dale Carnegie Toastmasters. 

Survivors include his wife, Willodean "Kit" Langohr of Pierceton; children, Jeff (Vickie) Langohr, Holly (Raymond) White and Scott (Betty) Langohr all of Pierceton and Craig (Susan) Langohr of Columbia City; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Dr. John, Richard and Dr. Robert Langohr and two sisters, Mary Spann and Marty Moran. 

At the request of the family, there will be no visitation or service.

Delores A. "Dee" Brown, age 78, of Columbia City, passed away at 9:05 p.m. Thursday, September 4, 2008, at Miller's Merry Manor.

Born on July 28, 1930, in Summerville, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Freeman Alfred and Gladys Mae (Enterline) Thomas.                

She attended Summerville Public Schools and she resided in Summerville until her marriage. On December 21, 1953 she married Donald V. Brown in Indiana, Pennsylvania.

She lived in various Indiana cities including Churubusco, South Whitley, Ligonier and Columbia City.

A devoted mother and homemaker, she was a member of the Lincolnway Church of Christ, Columbia City. 

Survivors include her three daughters, Darlene (Paul) Bockelman and Linda (Jon) Fulton both of Columbia City and Cynthia (Frank) Chance of Orleans, Indiana; two sisters, Arlene E. (James) Smith of Hawthorne, Pennsylvania, and LaVonne R. (James) Martz of Butte, Montana; a brother, Paul Eugene (Norma) Thomas, Brookville, Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine E. Thomas. 

Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Sunday, September 7, 2008, at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home in Columbia City. Claire L. Anderson, 48

Claire L. Anderson, 48, of rural Albion passed away on Monday, September 1st, 2008, at 10:45 p.m. at her residence in rural Albion with her family at her side.

She was born Claire Derrow on January 19, 1960, in Kendallville, and was the daughter of Chester C. and Betty Jean (Kunce) Derrow. She has been a lifetime resident on Noble County.

On July 20, 1991, at Cornerstone Church in Merriam she married David C. Anderson, he survives in Albion. Claire worked at Dresser Wayne (formerly Tokeheim) in Fremont for 26 years.

She was a member of the Albion American Legion Ladies Auxilliary, she enjoyed 4 wheeling, watching movies and her dogs.

Other survivors include a son, Zachary Anderson of Columbia City and a daughter, Jessica Watts of Kendallville, her sisters, Jeannette Shlater of Churubusco, RuthAnn Derrow, June Derrow both of Albion, Alice (Phil) Weeks of Albion, Lois Butler of Albion, Mary (Roger) Owen of Columbia City, Peggy Conley of LaFayette, and brothers, Tim Derrow and girlfriend Lisa Yates of Albion and Tom Derrow of Albion.

She is preceded in death by her parents and two brother-n-laws, Joe Butler and Robert Shlater

Funeral services will be Friday, September 5, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Brazzell Funeral Home, Albion Chapel, 771 Trail Ridge Rd. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Christopher Conley, Cody Derrow, Robb Owen, Chad Owen, Paul Butler, Todd Butler and Kevin Derrow.

Born in Pierceton, she worked at Archway Cookies in Fort Wayne then worked in the admission department in ER at Parkview Hospital for 30 years. She graduated from Pierceton High School in 1941, was a member of United Faith Presbyterian Church in Fort Wayne and volunteered at Lutheran. She enjoyed bowling, knitting, and cross-stitching.

Gertrude L. Snepp, 92

Gertrude L. Snepp, 92, a resident of Columbia City, died at 7:20 a.m. Tuesday, September 02, 2008, at Miller’s Merry Manor where she had been a resident since January 2008.
She was born October 10, 1915, in Jefferson Township, Whitley County, a daughter of Charles and Sarah A. (Cormany) Simon.

At age 10, after the death of her mother, the family moved to Fort Wayne. At age 16, they moved back to Columbia City where she attended Columbia City High School.
On April 7, 1934, she was united in marriage to Carl H. Snepp. They made their home in Columbia City. Mr. Snepp died April 3, 1971.
She was employed by the former Blue Bell of Columbia City for 36 years and was an Avon Representative for 23 years. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.
The surviving relatives include her a son, Ansley Snepp, Arlington, Texas, and a daughter, Barbara Klopfenstein, Columbia City; nine grandchildren including Kary Klopfenstein of Columbia City and David Klopfenstein of Keller, Texas; and15 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Jesse, Howard, Carl, Burtis and Eldon Simon and six sisters, Alma Simon, Florence Gradeless, Mary Walker, Gladys Grabach, Elva Simon and Ruth Grabach.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 6, 2008 at Smith & Sons Funeral Home in Columbia City with Rev. Curtiss Johnson officiating. The burial will be in South Park Annex Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Julia Ann “Judy” Zickgraf, 82, of Columbia City, died at 6:58 a.m. Monday, September 1, 2008, at Parkview Whitley Hospital where she was transferred Sunday afternoon from Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
She was born October 7, 1925, in Fort Wayne, Indiana a daughter of Earl B. and Irene (Smith) Fryer Sr. Her formative years were spent in Fort Wayne and she graduated from North Side High School in 1943. She continued her education at St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing.
On June 8, 1946, she was united in marriage to Joseph R. Zickgraf, Sr. They made their home in Fort Wayne until 1952 when they moved to Big Cedar Lake and later Columbia City, where Joe served as former mayor of Columbia City. Deacon Zickgraf died August 31, 2007.
She was employed from 1968 until 1997 at the Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission and Community Development Corporation.
Surviving relatives include seven children, Joseph R. (Bonnie) Zickgraf Jr. of Florida, Susan (John) Kasper of Maui, Hawaii, Tony (Debra) Zickgraf of Columbia City, Charles (Roxanne Hughes) Zickgraf of Churubusco, Dominic (Becky) Zickgraf of San Antonio, Texas, Pat (Kristen) Zickgraf of Columbia City and John (Karen) Zickgraf of South Carolina; 15 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Barbara Creek of Angola and Louise Spice of Fort Wayne.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Michael Andrew Zickgraf; a sister, Corrine James; and two brothers, Basil Fryer and William Fryer.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 4, 2008 at St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, Columbia City with viewing one hour before the service. Henry Sizemore, 96, of South Whitley, died at 1:43 a.m. Monday, September 1, 2008 at Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester, where he had been a resident since August 5.
He was born May 24, 1912, in Floyd County, Kentucky a son of Butler and Arie (McGuire) Sizemore. His formative years were spent in Floyd County.
On March 14, 1936, he was united in marriage to Bess Hubbard. They made their home in Floyd County until 1960 when they moved to South Whitley. Mrs. Sizemore died June 25, 1995.
A coal mine worker for many years, he retired from Farm Bureau in 1974.
His memberships include United Mine Workers and U.A.W.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Jim (Connie) Sizemore of Anderson and William Sizemore of South Whitley; six daughters, Sue (Terry) Hann, Louise (Buck) Rodman and Henrietta (Robert) Leonard, all of Wabash, Blanche (Mike) Kilander and Dora (Bruce) Gable, both of South Whitley and Janet (Rodney) Schilling of North Manchester; eleven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Juanita Castle; three brothers and four sisters.

Marceil L. Wiley Scott, 82

Marceil L. Wiley Scott, 82, of Wolf Lake, died at 5:10 p.m. Sunday, August 31, 2008 at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne where she was admitted on Thursday.
She was born April 24, 1926, in Fort Wayne, a daughter of Roswell and Carrie (Fusselman) McDowell. As a young girl, her family moved to Ohio until 1942 when they moved to Merriam. She graduated from Wolf Lake High School.
On June 3, 1945, she was united in marriage to Frederick “Pat” Wiley Sr. They made their home in the Wolf Lake area. Mr. Wiley died July 30, 1986.
On April 14, 1990, she was united in marriage to John Hudson Scott. They always made their home in Wolf Lake. Mr. Scott died January 7, 2000.
She was an LPN at Luckey Hospital in Wolf Lake and retired from Monsanto with 30 years of service.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Al (Katy) Wiley of Albion and Rob (Cheri) Wiley of Auburn; a daughter, April Day of Brundidge, Alabama; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert McDowell of Avilla; and a companion, Paul Keister of Albion.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Clark.

He was born January 3, 1956, in Fort Wayne a son of Howard W. and Verlo A. (Parker) Archer. His formative years were spent at Big Lake and he graduated from Central Noble High School.
On September 2, 1989, he married Linda L. Esterline. They have always made their home at Loon Lake.
He retired in February 2008 from Dana Corp. in Syracuse with 30 years of service and was a member of the UAW Local #1405 in Syracuse.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Linda; a son, Scott Christopher Archer, at home; a sister, Carolyn (Rev. Erwin) Kostizen of Highland, Michigan; a brother, Thomas (Phyllis) Archer of Huntertown; his in-laws, Ray & Judy Esterline of Loon Lake; a brother-in-law, John Esterline of Loon Lake; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 6, 2008, at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Pastor Tim Kumfer, pastor of Big Lake Church of God, officiating. The burial will be in Thorn Cemetery, Ormas. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Larry Pettigrew, 67

Larry Pettigrew, 67, of Columbia City, passed away at 4:45 p.m. Monday, September 1, 2008, at Parkview Whitley Hospital in Columbia City.  

Born on August 15, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan, he was the son of Howard M. and Thelma Millie (Smith) Pettigrew. 

Larry was a resident of Detroit until 1980 when he moved to the Columbia City and Fort Wayne areas. He graduated from DeLaSalle Collegient Boys School with the Class of 1959 and then attended college in Detroit. He loved to work with numbers and studied accounting. He was an avid traveler and was a member of the YMCA for the first 30 years of his life, where he played basketball.  

Survivors include his mother, Thelma Millie Pettigrew of Columbia City.   He was preceded in death by his father, Howard M. Pettigrew. 

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 from 6-8:00 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home in Columbia City. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Randy Grimes and Sharon Brockhaus, DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Celebrant, officiating. Burial will follow at Thorn Cemetery, Ormas, Indiana.

Memorials may be given in memory of Mr. Pettigrew to services for the blind.

Herbert "Bud" D. Hartman, 78

Herbert "Bud" D. Hartman, 78, of North Manchester died at 6:30 a.m. on Monday, September 1, 2008, at Lutheran Hospital of Indiana, Fort Wayne.

Born on February 23, 1930 in Whitley County, he was the son of Herbert V. and Rachel M. ( Davis ) Hartman. 

He moved from Columbia City to North Manchester in 1994.  He attended Columbia City High School and received his GED in the military. He served in the United States Army from 1948 from 1952 in the Korean War.

On July 31, 1970, he married Dorothy M. Richardson at First Church of God, Columbia City.

He worked at Riverside Dairy, Columbia City, for 5 years as a route driver, Columbia City Freight Lines for 30 years and Alvan Trucking for 10 years, retiring in 1994.

He attended First Church of God in Columbia City, Touch of Life Church in Warsaw, and Sweetwater Church in North Manchester. 

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy M. Hartman of North Manchester; 2 daughters, Karen (Jim) Hatfield and Kathy (Ray) Maggard both of Columbia City; 3 sons, Rex Hartman, Bradley (Jenny) Hartman and Brian Hartman all of Columbia City; 4 brothers, Robert Hartman and Dal Hartman both of Columbia City, Jack (Sandy) Hartman of Goshen, and Larry (Rosie) Hartman of Sterling, Colorado; 20 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Betty Weller and Evelyn Judd, a brother, Donald Hartman and a granddaughter, Ashley Hartman. 

Visitation will be on Thursday, September 4, 2008 from 2:00-8:00 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home in Columbia City. Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 5, 2008 at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home with Reverend Curtiss Johnson officiating. Burial to follow at Covington Memorial Gardens , Fort Wayne.

Memorials may be given in memory of Mr. Hartman to the Whitley County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard.  Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
