The Whitko High School and Middle School wrestling program is quickly gaining a winning reputation – particularly after recently winning sectionals and moving on to Regionals where they were also successful. The next step: Semi State.

Matt Koontz is the Whitko High School wrestling coach. Koontz, a previous State champion in years past for Whitko, and the other coaches, according to a parent, have done a remarkable job with the wrestling team this year.

Tim Smith is the coach for the Whitko Middle School and has also done an excellent job, a parent said.

Whitko has won their Three Rivers Conference seven times in recent years, but the Regional victory was particularly exciting. On Saturday, January 31, the Whitko High School wrestling team won the Regional championship with a score of 229.

The team had some very tough competition – Carroll High School’s team came in second place with a score of 189 and Garrett came in third with a score of 188.

Of the other Whitley County teams, Churubusco finished with 133 points and Columbia City finished with 111 points.
