John Plant wins raffle grand prize

John Plant's ticket was drawn Saturday and he was named the winner of the Team Mission Remission's Relay for Life raffle drawing. Plant won a cash prize of more than $3600 and was presented a check during the Relay for Life fish and tenderloin fry Saturday evening at the Whitley County 4-H Center building.

Winget and Audra Winger top in class at Whitko High School

Congratulations to Whitko High School seniors Thomas Winget and Audra Winger who were named Valedictorian and Salutatorian, respectively.

Whitko Dollars for Scholars

Congratulations to the Whitko Dollars for Scholars program! In four hours, 32 Whitko High School students were able to raise $8,100 during the Whitko Dollars for Scholars Phon-a-thon. The funds are used to provide college scholarships to Whitko High School students.

Michael Jeffrey honored as Leaders of Tomorrow scholar

Columbia City High School senior Michael Jeffrey, son of Mark and Deborah Jeffrey of Columbia City  was selected as the local winner of Embarq's Indiana Leaders of Tomorrow scholarship. Jeffrey received a $500 scholarship and a $500 donation to his school. The award was presented by Jack Moore, public affairs manager for Embarq.

Excellence in Servant Leadership Award

Congratulations to David Smith of Star Financial Bank for being a recipient of Leadership Whitley County's Excellence in Servant Leadership Award. Smith was nominated for the award by Peter Farrar and received the award during the 2008 Leadership Whitley County Celebration Dinner in Columbia City.

Elmer Heinley turns 93 on Wednesday, April 9!

Elmer Heinley celebrates his 93rd birthdayLifelong Whitley County resident and recent Sagamore of the Wabash award recipient Elmer Heinley celebrates his 93rd birthday on April 9.

A 59-year member of the Columbia City Rotary, his fellow Rotary Club members honored his birthday Tuesday with a rousing "Happy Birthday" followed by Heinley's favorite song, "Smile!" The photograph at left was taken as Heinley cheerfully lead the Rotarians in song in the lower level of the Parkview Hospital Auditorium Tuesday afternoon.

Eleanor Schmitt, daughter of Adam and Sarah Schmitt of Columbia City, celebrated her first birthday on Monday, April 7. Her grandparents include James and Patricia Schmitt of Chesterton, Richard Zartman of Tri Lakes and the late Carole Zartman. Her great-grandparents include Joan Main and Paul and Norma Zartman, all of Fort Wayne.

The family will celebrate with a birthday party on Saturday afternoon.

Honored at a small family gathering last evening, above, from left, Wanda (Henney) Bair, Eleanor Schmitt and Norma (Henney) Zartman celebrated their birthdays together. The three red-haired birthday girls have special days all in a row -- Bair celebrates her 81st birthday April 8, Eleanor Schmitt celebrates her 1st birthday April 7 and Zartman celebrated her 79th birthday April 6. Schmitt is the great-granddaughter of Zartman and the great-great-niece of Bair. Zartman and Bair are daughters of the late Clair and Bessie Henney of Jefferson Township and Schmitt is the daughter of Adam and Sarah Schmitt of Columbia City.
