Strong Kids Campaign is now underway
Nearly all diseases are preventable. That may seem to be a rather bold statement, but the medical community agrees that a healthy lifestyle provides natural immune protection against disease. We all struggle a little with the true definition of Health/Wellness. The World Health Organizations (WHO) states that “Overall health is achieved through a combination of physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being, which, together is commonly referred to as the Health Triangle.” Wellness has also been described as “the process of adopting patterns of behavior that can lead to improved health and heightened life satisfaction.” This behavior needs to begin with the very young rather than after the age of 40 or 50 or even later when damage has already long begun.
This leads me to remind you that the mission of the YMCA is” to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. The YMCA turns no one away that wishes to participate in their programs and services. The way that they do this is by using those monies from programs and memberships, but another very important initiative is through the Strong Kids Campaign that lasts for 6 weeks every year. Last year this Whitley County Chapter of the YMCA gave out more than $72,000 in scholarships to our community children and their families that wished to participate in their offered programs and services. The Strong Kids Campaign contributed $31,000 of those total dollars needed. Remember that health and wellness begins with the very young. You can see what a vital roll this campaign plays and will continue to play each and every year. This year our goal has been set at $30,000 and we want to exceed that goal with your help. Keep in mind that all monies raised in Whitley County stay in this County.
March 18, 2010 was the kick off for this Strong Kids Campaign and we will proceed with a passion and commitment until April 30th. One of our YMCA Board members, directors or someone from our Y membership might call you or ask you in person if you would consider donating to this campaign. Know that each dollar is valuable to its success in Whitley County, so please consider playing a very important part of this initiative.
